FOCI, BSU, SOCIAL WORK SPONSOR DR. KING CELEBRATIONS
Speeches, workshops, music, dinner, memorial messages and a social work colloquium are planned to celebrate the birthday and contributions of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. President of the American College Personnel
Association Marvalene Styles-Hughes is among the national black educators who will lead forums focusing on minorities in higher education during the annual IUPUI DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION on Jan. 18.
President of the College Board Donald M. Stewart also will join Vice President Gerald L. Bepko and other city and campus officials and scholars in special ceremonies
and forums throughout the day. The celebration is titled ~xcellence and Equity in Higher Education." Attention will be given such issues as recruitment and retention,
career outlook, health careers and financial aid. Robert Bedford, director of minority student services at IUPUI, is overseeing the day's events that are sponsored by the IUPUI Forum on Campus Interrelations (FOCI). The morning session with Mayor "Bill," other VIPs, music and Styles-Hughes' speech is from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Conference Center. In the afternoon from 2-5 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Union Building there will be several open workshops and Stewart will speak. Vice President Bepko
encourages faculty, staff and students to arrange their work to make time to attend at least part of the celebration.
THE BLACK STUDENT UNION'S 17TH KING COMMEMORATIVE DINNER is Jan. 18 beginning with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Madame Walker Urban Life Center ballroom. SLIM-A-THON UNDER "WEIGH" WITH HAKE CALLING, AEROBICS
The Fiscal Fatties and the Holi-daze are among the team names of overweight people on campus who want to to win this year's Slim-A-Thon and the battle against the bulge. Teams have weighed in and to help with that fat, Employee Health and Wellness and Human Resource
Development are offering Lunch and Learn Programs and two aerobics programs. Lunch and Learn are half-hour presentations on eating, exercise and health. Each of the following programs will be presented three times throughout January at different locations on campus. The programs by registered dietitians are: Sue Rhee presenting "Eating Disorder," Kathy Ousley and Nancy Kissick presenting "You're In Control," Barbara Amerman presenting "Look Mom, No Teeth," and Mark Daly from the natatorium presenting "Burning Calories through Exercise."
Slim-A-Thon members also can get free dietary consultation by calling Dr. Sheila Ward, director of Dietetic Internship Programs, 4-8461.
The first 10 people in Slim-a-Thon to register for aerobics will get a free T-shirt.
Pre-registration for intermediate/advanced aerobics is Jan. 11, 4:30-6:30 p.m. For beginners it is Jan. 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m., both in LO 318. Teresa Turner will teach two intermediate sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays--4:30-5:30 p.m. or 5:45-6:45 p.m. Mindy May will teach two beginner sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays--4:30-5:30 p.m. or 5:30-6:30 p.m. Special Slim-A-Thon rates are $17 for the first six weeks (13 sessions). A Coat For All--Thanks!--The family from Amo, Ind., whom we told you about in the Green Sheet had a truly wonderful Christmas, thanks to Continuing Studies folks who started a project to clothe, feed and give gifts to a mother and her five young children. The Alumni office, Personnel and Nursing were especially helpful in seeing that each person had a new outfit, new shoes and a winter coat. Toys and 10 sacks of food for them filled a van.

LAWRENCE A JEGEN, III IS THE FIRST CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the state's new Baccalaureate Education System Trust, which gives parents and guardians the opportunity to
"pre-pay" children's college costs to state colleges and universities. The trust promotes higher education, gives institutions a more stable financial base and encourages students to attend Indiana educational institutions. Jegen is the Thomas F. NEW CENTER TO AID, TEST, TEACH
IUPUI and IPS are cooperating in a new development program, University Access Center,
designed to afford more people in Indianapolis the opportunity to find out about admissions to IUPUI and other postsecondary educational programs. The Access Center, located in "D"
building on the 38th St. campus, will cooperate with local high schools in preparing students for university-level work through further study. Primary focus will be on assessment of individual preparation and academic strengths based on testing and
counseling. IUPUI will provide these services and instruction will be provided directly by IPS or by the non-credit IUPUI Div. of Continuing Studies. IUPUI will help develop course curriculum, which will include reading, writing, mathematics, listening and study skills development. Courses will be here and at Arsenal Technical High School and other sites in the city. The Center will help fill the gap left with the closing Dec. 31 of the HELP (Higher Education Learning Preparation) program that fell victim to the elimination Sept.
30 of federal funding. Nancy P. Obergfell, a counselor and placement officer in Careers and Employment Services, is acting director. Access Center will operate as a program of the IUPUI Div. of Continuing Studies, directed by Scott Evenbeck. A policy committee is directed by Associate Dean Carol Nathan.
LAURELS ON US. The colorful Pan Am Mural has garnered us one of 10 Beautification Awards from the Commission for Downtown. The mural was a joint project between Liberal Arts and Herron.
