Herrick Librarians Meeting March 25, 2009
Present: Steve Crandall, Laurie McFadden, Ellen Bahr, Brian Sullivan
1. Senate Election
Laurie McFadden was unanimously re-elected to a 3-year term as Herrick Library’s representative to the Faculty Senate.
2. ACRL Report
Laurie and Brian shared some of what they learned at the 2009 Association of College and Research Libraries conference in Seattle. Laurie attended numerous sessions relating to
institutional repositories and gathered some ideas for ways in which she can start one at Alfred.
She noted that it would be useful not only for internal university documents, but also for faculty and student publications, including dissertations and honors theses.
Brian attended numerous sessions on library instruction. Both Laurie and Brian learned more about LibGuides (see #3 below).
3. LibGuides
Laurie, Brian, and Mark Smith (Scholes) learned more about LibGuides at ACRL and are interested in exploring it as a possible tool for the Alfred University Libraries as a replacement for Research by Subject. It also has the potential of serving as a platform in which to create course specific guides that could foster further collaboration with the subject faculty and can easily be integrated into Blackboard. Ellen will set up a demo and get pricing information on LibGuides.
4. Departmental Reports
Ellen reported that ILLiad will soon have unmediated article request capability, which should simplify the process of obtaining articles from other libraries.
Laurie gave an update on several student worker and course projects related to Special Collections.
5. Support Staff Recognition Day
Various possible ways in which to celebrate Support Staff Recognition Day (April) were
discussed. Lunch at Howell Hall was proposed. Steve will ask Carla if the faculty and staff from Scholes would like to be involved. Potential gifts for support staff were also pondered.
6. Next Meeting
It was decided that Laurie’s Senate Report and the topic of Texting for Reference would be moved to next month’s meeting.
Respectfully submitted, Brian T. Sullivan
