Human Rights Works and PIHRL

This latest addition to the Law School's pro bono program, called the Pro Bono International Human Rights Law Education Program, aims to “develop law students into international human rights lawyers, scholars and defenders.” The program allows students to serve as legal mentors for Indianapolis children, including prisoners. Our objectives are twofold: first, to ensure the respect, protection and fulfillment of the human rights of children, in accordance with international human rights norms, standards and principles; And,. The parties agreed to research, map and discuss children's issues using a human rights-based approach.

Ultimately, the International Pro-Bono Human Rights Education Program will work toward eliminating all forms of racism and promoting social equity and justice in Indianapolis,” explained Waters, who served as program coordinator and advocate. of staff at the University of Arizona James E. In addition to the CRC, the program also aims to promote the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and other human rights treaties .

Launch Human Rights Education Program

Next stop: New Orleans

Guiding Clients

What really drew me to New Orleans is that the city was at a critical juncture and seemed a challenging place to live. The highlight of my internship experience in New Orleans was the opportunity to go to an immigration detention center. The trip was four hours away from New Orleans and was coordinated by Ken Mayeaux of Catholic Charities, Baton Rouge.

Balducci and I met at the office at 7:30 and drove to Kenner, Louisiana to pick up Marina and Peter. We had coffee at Baton Rouge and waited for the other members of our delegation.

I think this is just a continuation of the struggle that has been going on for some time. We visited an immigration detention center to provide free counseling services to those detained there. Balducci, Marina (another attorney at Catholic Charities New Orleans), Peter (another intern), and me.

We had a delegation of 11 people, and at 10.10, when everyone had arrived, we went out to Basile, Louisiana, where the detention center is located. We arrived at the detention center around 14:00 and waited in the lobby for an hour and thirty minutes before we could go in to see the detainees.

Down-to-earth immigration judge

This was where the mayor of New Orleans attended mass, so it was an opportunity for me to see him. I expected a convoy, escorts and numerous bodyguards like in Cameroon, but there were none. In my limited experience in Black American Catholic churches, I was struck by the vitality and empathy that the Black community brings to the celebration of Mass.
