49 A. Findings
The research results that the researcher discovered in the field were explained in this section. Data was collected by the researcher through interview. Researcher conducted research on three students in learning pronunciation using native English vlog. The researcher has conducted this research on January 14th, 2023.
The researcher then discussed the research findings in this chapter, breaking them down into two topics.
1. Strategies In Learning Pronunciation Through Native English Vlog
The result of interview indicated that there were three types of strategies the students used to learn pronunciation through Native English Vlogs. These strategies were memory, cognitive strategy and affective.
After the interviews conducted, the researcher found that from the first student how in the first step for her learning pronunciation through vlogs, she listens carefully and then watched the video without CC or subtitle after that she watched again with subtitles turned on, wrote the words that she finds difficult or even important so she can memorized words with the help of the notes
then rewatch and made a summary of the lessons learned that day.
From that answer, it can be implied that the first student used can be memory and cognitive as well for her study because she likes to pay attention and try to understand well with the way she listened carefully at the same time she tries to solved the problem with taking notes and give summary. Additionally, she also used affective strategy because the way she managed her emotion with motivation and think positively during her learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog.
Next from the second student, first of all, she’s opened the YouTube application on her cellphone, then look for the vlog that she wanted to study after that watched carefully and seriously in a quiet place, she said she liked to repeat the video while following the words of native speakers, if there are words that she doesn't understand the meaning she would translated it with google translate and then wrote it in the book. From that statement, the student used cognitive strategy as a result of her study with the way she liked to repeat aloud after a native speaker spoke and translated the words during her learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog. Also just like the first student, she used affective strategy here in proceed deal with her feeling and values that have impact on her learning situation, in this matter she also has postive and excitement attitude that motivates her. For the last student she stated that on the
first step she watched the video until it's finished after that repeat the video again while following the native speaker's way of saying the words, sometimes she pauses the video first and then follow it on the video slowly, try to record the sound of the words loudly after that compare it to the native speakers in the vlog, are they already the same or at least close to it. This student also used cognitive and affective strategies into her learning because she liked to record her own voice to heard her pronunciation after watched Native English vlog and there was the challenging feel into learning this pronunciation through Native English Vlog that made result as a motivation.
Conclusion, all of the students used affective strategy that as a result they have motivation, think positively and excitement during their learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog.
After that, there was the one student used memory and cognive strategies at the same time because of the way she utilized her memory skill for learning pronunciation such as practice repeatedly, representing sound in memory, write that the difficult words on the paper and made summary of lesson learned that day while the other two used cognitive strategies for their learning pronunciation with the way they concentrate while watched and listened the video also known as vlog moreover, they use of their mind skills into learning like formally practicing with sounds such as they reading aloud and
repeat the words after a native speaker then translating words and record her own voice and compared with native speaker.
2. Perceptions In Learning Pronunciation Through Native English Vlog
By searching for the chosen Native speaker, the researcher discovered that students frequently watch Native English Vlogs.
The students watch Native English Vlogs depending on their preferred topics, particularly those related to pronunciation. The researcher approached the students to ask them about their general perceptions on the usage of Native English Vlogs to learning pronunciation. It was prove it by the interview below:
The researcher interviewed three junior high school students after that give them some question for them to respond using their knowledge and experiences. The researcher interviewed on Saturday January 14th, 2023.
Here, the researcher would want to present the students' positive and negative perceptions of a Native English Vlog in learning English pronunciation. Generally, when the researcher asked what they know about Native English Vlog, the students said they thought Native English Vlog is the YouTube video who created by Native English Speaker. Next, when the researcher asked about what they think the use of native English vlog in learning pronunciation all of students agreed that Native English
Vlog make them interested in learning pronunciation because the method is unique and modern. It is also useful for speaking fluidly so the communication will be easier.
After that, perception in learning pronunciation using Native English Vlog. In terms of the positive perception of watching native English video blogs, every student are quite similar in their perceptions even though it has different meaning.
Based on the interview result, the students said learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog is useful with how native speakers pronounce words more clearly than non-native speakers do, they also have rich vocabulary and thanks because of that students like learning pronunciation through it.
Next, when the researcher asked how are their experiences when learning pronunciation using vlog. Most of the students like it even though they still having difficulty, they still enjoyed because of interest and how feels challenged to keep learning pronunciation through vlogs.
Then when the researcher asked what topic usually are studied and how long many times a week to learn that, student A stated she’s interested in pronunciation lesson such as English pronunciation training like how to improve your accent and speak clearly and how to sound better in English. She said she learns by that material normally about two times around 40 minutes a week.
Meanwhile student B said she wants to know the differences or comparison between American and british English usually learned that three times approximately 60 minutes in a week afterwards for student C she claimed that she is interested with the topic of pronounce words like how to pronounce top 100 words and learn 400 adjectives and synonyms & pronounce in 40 minutes. She learns that two times about an hour of the week.
In addition, as long as conducting interview. All of students think that native English vlog is fun ways of learning pronunciation through it although there’s still difficulty because of uncommon words for students to understand unless they used their dictionaries or translating through google translate. Overall, students give the positive perception rather than the negative one. Researcher also found that the students have their own motivated perceptions it can be prove through their expressed of liking and excitement to use native English vlog in learning pronunciation.
B. Discussion
After the data has been obtained and in the process like the description above, the researcher has written analyzed the data that has been obtained at the findings. The researcher also know how are the students perception in learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog and what are the the students strategies in learning English pronunciation through the use of Native English
Vlogs.
1. Strategies In Learning Pronunciation Through Native English Vlog
According to the data findings, there were three strategies from the students in learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog such as Memory, Cognitive and Affective Strategies. The following below are the explanation of the strategies;
A. Memory Strategy
The first strategy was memory. Much of the information we learn about pronunciation simply needs to be recalled, and we frequently need to use our working memory to connect new information to what we already know. In order to get more information enters long-term memory, the student need this kind of strategy.
Despite the complexity of the memory process, we remember things better when: deliberately pay attention to, or take notice of, understand well and repeat several times.
1. Pay attention
Our ability to pay attention enables us to anticipate, plan, monitor, and control our thoughts and behaviors. In order to learn, one must first pay attention. Unless we first pay attention, we cannot comprehend, learn, or remember anything.
2. Understand
By having students translate new words into their native tongue, they can improve their understanding of them.
3. Repeat
For pronunciation improvement, repetition is key. You must use various muscles to make the sounds in your mouth during pronunciation. You might not use these muscles when speaking in your native tongue. Repetition can help with:
Contrasting sounds (such p/b; r/l; i/I; v/w, etc.), tricky English sounds, such as "th", words with stress (example MAN-age, MAN- ag-er), intonation, linking between sounds. You can concentrate on your individual areas of difficulty for 5–10 minutes each day. You can concentrate on your individual areas of difficulty for 5–10 minutes each day.
So, memory strategies is one of the useful strategy that student applied for help her to get better in learning pronunciation.
B. Cognitive Strategy
The second strategy was cognitive. One form of learning method that students employ to study more effectively is cognitive strategy. There are numerous ways for pupils to practice what they have learned, such through repeating, practicing formally with sounds, translating. Moreover, repetition is the most favorite strategy. Students will often repeat something in order to fully comprehend it. Johnstone (2013) asserts that repetition has an
impact on how meaning is created. Cognitive impacts result from repetition. Repetition speeds up students' acquisition and comprehension of new material. According to Tannen (1989), automaticity is designed for the speaker to talk, and repetition in speech is a form of spontaneous pattern. Putting prior knowledge into practice is crucial for foreign language learners.
Additionally, one of the techniques used by the students to learn pronunciation was translating. As long as it is done carefully, translating can be a useful method early on in language learning, according to Oxford (1990). It enabled students to understand what they heard in the new language by using their native tongue as a foundation.
Moreover, summarizing teaches students how to distill a text or other source of information down to its essential concepts.
Students must decide which topics in the text should be included and which can be left out. Since everything seems significant to young learners so this is not an easy task. Making notes, summarizing, and highlighting are techniques that have a positive link with student progress (Padron and Waxman in Mahilda 2018).
The students were able to record the overall idea or specific points by taking notes. Writing can be beneficial and raise the caliber of students' course materials (Mehran, Ahmad, and Elham, 2017). The study's findings indicate that employing the
aforementioned techniques helped students learn pronunciation.
C. Affective Strategy
The last strategy was affective. According to Mandasari &
Oktaviani (2018), this strategy is the best method for encouraging students to acquire a second language. By encouraging themselves, students will be able to express their emotions and lessen the challenges they encounter. As from students feel excitement, since beginning they think positively when about learning pronunciation with Native English Vlog as their media of learning. Oxford categorized this strategy as using one's influence over one's self- esteem to instill worthwhile ideals in language acquisition. So, affective strategy was very important for students learning especially in pronunciation.
As the explanation of the three strategies above, there were three remaining strategies which are not used. These are compensation, metacognitive, and social strategies. For compensation, as explanation from Oxford (1990) the strategy was involve the learner used such as gestures while in this study the learners have independent learning when they mostly listening to the native speaker in the video so they don’t need to use this kind of strategy. Next is metacognitive, the Inclusive Schools Network (2014) states that "metacognitive strategies refer to techniques used to assist students comprehend the way they learn; in other words, it
means procedures designed for students to 'think' about their 'thinking’ This strategy is a bit complicated for seventh grade students as they still beginner so they also don’t used this kind of strategy. The last one is social strategy, this strategy include being cooperative, asking inquiries and participate in a debate learning group to solve an issue. While in this study, the students having independent learning when they took study alone, therefore there’s no such social strategy in use.
2. Perceptions In Learning Pronunciation Through Native English Vlog
The result of interview revealed that there was mostly positive perceptions from three students. As the data, the majority of students prefer to respond positively while the researcher is conducting an interview. The perception of students are a result of their experiences using Native English Vlog to learn English pronunciation.
In this case, the researcher combined three results of the positive perceptions into three important aspects; for the aspect number one is Native English Vlog as the media can help the students cognitive in pronouncing the word and decrease the mother tongue, the second aspect is Native English Vlog can give the understanding about the knowledge and vocabularies based on foreign culture and the last aspect is Native English speaker can
help the students affective by applying interesting method so that make the students motivated and feel happy. Students who were learning English believed that the pronunciation lesson was challenging and that particularly in this time period, using pronunciation in speaking of daily interactions for educational purposes had become more difficult. According to Fraser (1999) since pronunciation is the part of language that gets the least attention, students needed a Native English Vlog as an alternate form of media to aid their cognitive development in pronouncing English words and reduce their reliance on their mother tongue.
According to the students, using a Native English Vlog could make it easier for non-native speakers to pronounce English words by imitating the way that Native speakers make their speech sounds and by allowing students to mimic this sound.
Harmer (1991) further noted that native English teachers (speakers) are those who are expected to give proper pronunciation, idiomatic expression, and the capacity of acceptable language in the context of this study. As a result, the students believe that their native English-speaking teachers have an impact on how they speak English while minimizing the influence of their home tongue. The students also think that by using Native English Vlogs to practice pronunciation lessons, their ears will become more acclimated to hearing English words.
According to Zanon (2006), referenced in Florente (2016), learning pronunciation through activities including re-voicing videos, reading movie subtitles, and listening to native speakers' speech would assist learners enhance their language comprehension.
Regarding aspect number 2, the students feel that Native English Vlogs help them acquire new knowledge and more vocabulary related to other cultures. This claim has an impact on students' perceptions of how native English speakers assist students in communicating with native speakers when speaking a foreign language. The students can easily adapt to the English cultural sounds by using the vocabulary from Native English Vlog. Witkins & Wilkins (2011) view that YouTube Vlog (Native English Vlog) can be the approach to educate culture (foreign culture), expose students to English in the World, and help them enhance their vocabulary supports those claims.
Moreover, the last aspect of positive perception is Native English Vlog can help the students by applying interesting method in learning English pronunciation so that the students feel motivated and happy. In this case, the students stated that the method of Native English speaker always make the students motivated in learning. The native English speaker's method prevents boredom in the students. It implies that, the motivation
comes from the students themselves because of the interest in the learning pronunciation through Native English speaker vlog.
Conclusion, all of students have good point of view toward learning pronunciation through Native English Vlog and this make a result that they give positive perceptions rather than the negative one.
