AN ANALYSIS THE TYPES OF STUDENT’S HABIT ON READING ARTICLES FOR THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF STKIP PGRI WEST SUMATERA IN 2015/2016 ACADEMIC YEAR

ABSTRACT

This research is descriptive quantitative intends to analyze the type of students’ habits on reading article of students STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in 2015/2016academic year. The respondents of this research is 50 students English Departmnent of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra 2015/2016academic year were selected by random sampling techniques. The results of data analysis in the form of a percentage based on the students answers from thequestionnaire, and found that the highest of students' habits on reading articles is concentration type with the total percentage of 68% and the amount included in good categories. The second highest type is deviationalwith the total percentage 67.6% and the amount included in good categories. The third highest type is hobbial with the total percentage 64.4% and the percentage amount included in good categories. The lowest type is recreation with the total percentage of 43.2% and the amount included in the enough category.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif yang bermaksud menganalisa tipe kebiasaan membaca artikel mahasiswa STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat tahun pelajaran 2015/2016. Responden dari penelitian ini adalah 50 orang mahasiswa bahasa inggris di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat tahun pelajaran 2015/2016 yang dipilih dengan random sampling teknik. Hasil analisis data berupa persentasi berdasarkan jawaban dari questionnaire siswa, dan ditemukan bahwa kebiasaan membaca artikel siswa yang paling tinggi adalah tipe concentration dengan jumlah persentasi 68% dan termasuk pada kategori baik. Tipe yang tertinggi kedua adalah tipe deviational dengan jumlah pesentasi 67,6% dan termasuk pada kategori baik. Tipe yang tertinggi ketiga adalah tipe hobbial dengan jumlah persentasi 64,4% dan termasuk pada kategori baik. Tipe yang paling rendah adalah tipe recreation dengan jumlah persentasi 43,2% dan termasuk pada kategori cukup.

INTRODUCTION

Reading is a skill which is very essential to be mastered by students because a good reading comprehension will help students to increase their reading achievement and master the other skills.

Reading will accomodate students in accumulating information needed to study english and to develop their other skills either listening, speaking, or writing. Reading skills as a part of receptive skills give the first priority in the printed information that is very dominant nowadays. Through reading, people can improve their own knowledge, experience and broaden students’ horizon of thinking, which are needed to ensure the continuing personal growth and adapt the changes.

According to Tampubolon (1990:227), habits are attitude or activity, whether physical or psychological, which has been ingrained in a

person. Because it is ingrained, it is very difficult for a person to leave a particular habit, except accompanied by a strong determination to change.

The formation of a habit in a person did not happen in a short time. Its formation was through certain developmental processes and relatively time consuming.In addition, habit is especially important in the context of advancing sustainability, as many behaviours with the biggest environmental impacts. Articles is important to the students, to improve their knowledge, comprehension and goals in studying academic. It also gives the students more information about research, science, and the new things that do not know of the students. The students must read the articles because all of the students will be faced with the situation, where the students make a research, or thesis. 2 so to make the students research success, they must read more and more articles to give them first insight, knowledge and comprehension about research

According to Danifil (1985:60-61), reading habit is a voluntary activity as reading personal needs. He said automatic reading activity if the person who has the habit of reading by itself stimulated to read if circumstances such as time, place, and type of reading can be met. To measure the indicator reading someone's tradition can be seen from how often (frequency), not long (time), the type of reading (variety), how to obtain (tips, the fund moves reading), and absorption

According to Moeliono (1994:129), reading habit is something that is normally done or pattern for do responses to specific situations are studied by someone individual or students and he/

she does repeatedly for the same thing. It will make the students fells reading is a needs to continuous this life.

According to Sangkaeo (1999:20-28), Reading habit refers to the behaviour, which expresses the likeness of reading and tastes of reading. It is a way of how the reader organizes his or her reading. It is a actions that normally done and do repeatedly by students in language clasroom to make them learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferable to new situation. So, they can plan and regulate their learning itself and help students to comprehend, learn or retain new information.

Reading habit refers to behavior on reading something, like a books, magazines, and newspapers. Reading is a boost of interest, the effort of people to know something or to obtain something that is a pleasure. through reading people can develop themselves, communicate with circumstances beyond themselves and understand the environment well. With reading people will gain the ability.

According to Ogbodo (2010:231), four types of reading habit namely, Hobbial, Recreational, Concentration, and Deviational.

a. Hobbial. A hobby is an activity one does because he derives some joy and satisfaction in doing it. After formal education attainment, some people like reading as their hobby. Its purpose is to widen the readers horizon in things

educational, religious, political, economic, current affairs, fiction and non-fiction.

b. Recreational. Fundamentally, reading for recreation or relaxation is very common among the education elite. People who have gainful employment spend the whole day in the offices trying to solve problems related to the jobs they do. When they come back from work, they normally desire a change by reading books newspapers and other written materials which are different and of interest to them.

c. Concentration. It is an activity that only focus on college or learn, it is the most important one that provides the desired outcome. It is the bedrock and the result oriented reading which makes for achievement. Those who are in this type, usually prioritizes the name of the lesson.

they will always read the textbook to get good value and simultaneously increase their knowledge and insights on the lessons and everyday life.

d. Deviational. Only reading habit which has a negative norm. The reader sometimes pretends to read and deviates from the actual reading. Those who are in this type, usually only going to read a book when there are others who see or teachers who see it, and it could be just as pretending to read. they do it only to steal the attention of the people around him. he would not read when he was not noticed by the people around him.

RESEARCH METHOD

In this research, the researcher used descriptive quantitative study. The researcher chose descriptive research to analyze what are the tyes of student’s habit on reading articles for the first year students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in 2015/2016 academic year. participants were group of individual that participates in research project. Responden of this research were the first year students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in 2015/2016 academic year. Based on data of english teacher of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera, the first year students of english department. English department who were registries in academic year 2015/2016 are 130. They were divided into four classes (2015 A, 2015 B, 2015 C, and 2015 D). In this research, researcher used. In doing this research, the researcher arranged questionnaires based on indicators of type reading habit which were related to hobbial, recreational, concentration, and deviational. After collecting the data process,

3 the researcher did analysis toward the data based on the document. The data were analyzed by using scoring the questionnaire. The questionnaire will be formulated in statistic data to find the percentage generally by using formula from Riduwan (2010:89).

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

The researcher analyzed that the first year students at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera used type reading habit. It consisted of hobbial, recreational, concentration, and deviational. The resopnden did the responsess of type reading habit as the table below :

From the table above, the researcher concluded that majority of students answered in hobbial started from ever with the total percentage

64,4%, often with the total percentage 23,2%, always 8,8%, meanwhile the minority was never just 3,6%. The high scale in hobbial was ever with the total percentage 64,4%.

Then, the majority of students answered in recreational started from often with the total percentage 43,2%, ever with the total percentage 39,6%, always 14,8%, meanwhile the minority of students answered was never and just 2,4%. The high scale in recreation was sometimes with the total percentage 43,2%.

Next, the majority of students answered in concentration started from ever with the total percentage 68%, often with the total percentage 16,8%, always 10%, meanwhile the minority of students answered was never just 5,2%. The high scale in concentration was ever with the total Percentage 68%.

After that the majority of students answered in deviational started from ever with the total percentage 67,6%, often with the total percentage 18,8%, never 7,6%, meanwhile the minority of students answered was always just 6%.

The high scale in deviational was ever with the total percentage 67,6%. Based on the total percentage of high scale, the researcher found the most percentage of high scale was type concentration with the total percentage of high scale 68%.

Based on diagram above, it can be saw that what are the type of Students’ Habit on Reading Articles for the first Year Students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in Academic Year of 2015/2016 was concentration with total percentage 68%. The students mostly in this type because the students only read the articles for achievement, learn and to got a good score in studying. It helped the students to plan their learning to improved their ability in reading, especially on reading articles.

4 They read the articles only to got attention and praise from friends, teacher and other. Furthermore, hobbial 64,4%, and recreation with the total percentage 43,2%. These types just to facilitated and supported them on reading articles.

CONCLUSIONS

Reading is a skill which is very essential to be mastered by students because a good reading comprehension will help students to increase their reading achievement and master the other skills.

Reading will accomodate students in accumulating information needed to study english and to develop their other skills either listening, speaking, or writing. Reading skills as a part of receptive skills given the first priority in the printed information is very dominant nowadays. Through reading, people can improve their own knowledge, experience and broaden students’ horizon of thinking, which are needed to ensure the continuing personal growth and adapt the changes. The researcher used random sampling in selecting sample. The total of respondents was 50 students. In getting the data the researcher used questionnaire as a instrument.

From the data, the researcher concluded that types of the students habit on reading articles are hobbial, recreational, concentration, deviational. What are the types of students habit on reading articles for the first year students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in 2015/2016 academic year is concentration with the total percentage 68%.

SUGGESTIONS

After analyzing what are the student’s habit on reading articles for the First Year Students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera in 2015/2016 Academic Year, the researcher has some suggestion for the students, lecturer, and the next researcher. The suggestion are presented as follow : First, for students. Students should be active in learning and finding information in order to get more knowledge, especially the reading habit on reading articles.It is suggested for the students to practice more and more in reading articles.The students should be active in teaching learning process, and improve their habit on reading articles in college and home.

Second, for lecturer. The lecturer should pay attention to the students and encourage the students to improve their habit on reading articles.The lecturer should recommended going to the library and comment on class reading.The lecturer should completeness of infrastructure and facilities to cultivate the students habit on reading articles.

Last, for the next researcher. Because of the limitation of this research, the researcher hope the coming researcher to make more complete study of this case and use this study as the literature in

order to get science development of english personal reading habit especially on reading articles.
