AN ANALYSIS OF MEDIA THAT USED BY LECTURER AT STKIP PGRI WEST SUMATERA

Abstract
Media is a tool that used by lecturer to make easy in the apply tool in advanced listening. Media is a tool that used in learning process in advanced listening. This research is descriptive research to observed kind of tool or media that used by two lecturer of English education in STKIP PGRI West Sumatera at class 14 A to 14 E. in the determine the participant, the researcher used total sampling. So, the researcher decided twice of lecturer be a participant in this research. Technique accumulation of data that used in this research was observation and video recording. Twice of the instrument used to observed types of media that used by lecturer at STKIPWest Sumatera.
The first thing that used by researcher was observation with video recording. Observation checklist as a tool in the research process. From the result found that the lecturer at STKIP PGRIWest Sumatera had used media in learning process. Media that used by first lecturer was print media, still picture and the second lecturer use same media.
Abstrak
Media merupakan alat yang digunakan oleh dosen untuk mempermudah dosen dalam mengaplikasikan media dalam advanced listening. Media ini merupakan sebuah alat yang dipakai dalam pelaksanaa proses pembelajaran di advanced listening. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk melihat jenis alat atau media yang digunakan oleh dua orang dosen bahasa Inggris di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat dikelas 14A sampai 14E. Adapun jumlah dosen bahasa inggris di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat tersebut yang menjadi partisipan adalah dua orang. Dalam menentukan partisipan peneliti menggunakan teknik total sampling. Jadi, penelitian menetapkan kedua dosen tersebut menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi dan video recording. Kedua instrument tersebut digunakanu ntuk melihat tipe-tipe media yang digunakan oleh dosen di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Hal pertama yang digunakan peneliti adalah observasi dengan menggunakan video rekaman, observation checklist sebagai alat selama observasi.
Dari hasil yang ditemukan bahwa dosen di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat telah mengggunakan media dalam proses belajar mengajar. Media yang digunakan oleh dosen pertama adalah print media, still picture dan dosen kedua ,menggunakan media yang sama.

INTRODUCTION
Teaching learning is process in giving knowledge and help students to solve their problems in learning English.
Teaching process can be happen in everywhere as long as teacher can give the knowledge and the students can understand and comfortable in teaching and learning English. English is foreign language to students in Indonesia.
English has function in teaching learning English like students can develop the ability to communicate in both oral and written
In learning English, the teacher must make students be active in the classroom. Instructional media is one of ways that can be used to engage students actively in learning activities. Basically, instructional media is used as the equipments or tools that supplied to teaching process. An instructional media is primariy concerned with achieving learning and must deal with a number of relevant needs of a field. Januszewski (2001 : 77) states that instructional media include educational media which is a field involved in the facilitation of human learning through the systematic identification, development, organization of a full range of learning resources.
As learning support, Instructional media can support the learning process achievement fully. In addition, before the teacher used the media in teaching learning, they must prepare an appropriate media to make the students receive all of information from the teachers’ explanation easily and then in choosing media, the teachers must give the useful media to make the material a media analogous till the teaching learning can run based on the lesson purpose. .
Based on the researcher’s pre observation, the researcher found instructional media that are used by lecture, the lecturer used instructional media in teaching Listening at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera. When the researcher observed the lecture in applying the instructional media, there were some activities which were done
indeed. There were used of instructional media like printed text: Book. The lecture gave task to students by using Book after the lecturer explained the lesson in the class and the students make task it.
After that, the teacher also used Audio Visual such as Tape Recorder.
The lecture turn on the Tape Recorder to students in the class. Then, the lecturer also asked to listen. Besides the lecturer also used audio when introduce new lesson about song. The lecture asked students to hear the song and text the song to the book. So, lecturer asked the students to sing the song in front of class.
This is done by the lecturer in order to get a response from students during in Learning Listening.
Based on phenomena above, the researcher analyze about the instructional media which used English lecture in teaching Listening. Therefore, the researcher would like to analyze the lecturer’ media when they are coming into the class and delivering the material by using instructional media and this step the researcher will do analyze about instructional media that the teachers utilize in the class.
RESEARCH METHOD
In this research, the researcher will conduct this study into descriptive research. The researcher implements descriptive research because the researcher wants to analyze the types of instructional media used by the teachers and the teachers’ way in using the media in using instructional media as media in teaching English. According to Gay and Airasian (2000: 257), descriptive study determines and describes the way of things are. It can be said that descriptive research describes the phenomena without giving treatment or manipulation about the types of instructional media used by the Lecturer
Participants are the important in a research. According to Gay and Airasian (2000:121), participants are group of individual that participates in research project. To get the data the researcher
has to consider the appropriate participants. Gay and Airasian (2000:
281) state that selected participants must be able to provide the desire information and willing to provide it to the researcher. Referring to explanation above, the researcher chooses English teacher at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera as the participants.
Participants in this research, is selected by using total population sampling.
According to Pitney and Parker (2009:43), total population sampling includes everyone associated with a small group as participants in a study.
The researcher will select total population sampling because the English teachers who are thought at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera are two Lecturer. So, the researcher will take all of them as participants.
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
After researcher do observation checklist with lecturer at STKIP PGRI WEST SUMATERA, researcher find that lecturer use instructional in teaching listening. It is related to the theory of Abimande (2006:64-82) explain about use instructional media. Both of the lecturer use textbook to support learning process in teaching listening, and also use tape recorder or cassette to support the listening process.
The result of observation data show that lecturer at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera use instructional media various way.
The first, the lecturer give to students a textbook as toefl book. Toefl book is a media that always used by lecturer in teaching listening. In the toefl book there are some questions that must be answered based on the file recording that will turn on and discuss about all the material in toefl book. So, the students make listening activity and all at once answer the questions that appropriate to what the students listening in file recording.
The second, both of them use illustration from the textbook. It means that, before beginning turn on the file record, both of lecturer give illustration
or instruction that have to understand in learning process.
CONCLUSION
As explanation in chapter 1, the purpose of this research was to describe about the types of instructional media that used by lecturer in teaching listening at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera. The research tried to look the answer of research questions about the types of instructional media that used by lecturer in teaching listening. In other to get the purpose of this research, the researcher has used the technique of data collection based on the explanation in chapter III.
This technique has been done in observation section by the researcher.
The researcher conducted this research in students at STKIP PGRI West Sumatera by using descriptive method as a design of this research. This research has been taken from two lecturer who taught English in STKIP PGRI West Sumatera.
Based on the technique of data collection, the researcher concluded that here are some types of media that used by lecturer. It could be found some findings. The first lecturer used five types of media and the second lecturer used seven media. It can be seen from data analysis that has been interpreted before. The lecturer has been known about the media as general. Although as the theory, they knew about types of media technique. The researcher found that not all the lecturer used types of media in teaching listening. But, generally, the lecturer had used lot of media.
