Study Goals: Knowledge:

Describe and explain basic microbiology knowledge, methods and its application in pharmacy.

Skills:

Apply and demonstrate aseptic work, sterilization process, identification bacteria with conventional methods, calculate bacteria number in samples, determine and measure antibiotic potency, demonstrate PCR, electrophoresis of DNA & protein.

Competence:

 Analyze and interpret data of basic microbiology methods.

 Summarize scientific article content in written report and presentation.

Content: Structure, function and composition of prokaryotic cells (eubacteria &

archaebacteria) & virus; growth of microbe & virus; diversity of microbe &

virus; genetics of microbe; role of microbiology in Pharmacy; uniqueness of microbes (Presentation of written assignment); structure, function &

diversity of fungi and algae; structure, function & diversity of protozoa;

deterioration caused by microbe; microbial preservation & storage; standard quality of microbiology & basic of microbial control; microbiology assay for

pharmaceutical products; laboratory safety, audit & risk assessment;

secondary metabolite bioactive of marine microorganism for drug discovery.

Laboratory work modul: medium preparation and sterilization of instrument;

aseptic technique and inoculation methods, preparing subculture on solid and liquid medium; isolation,identification and confirmation microbes (Gram Staining); microbial contamination/ limit test and sterility test; determination of potency of antimicrobial agent; polymerase chain reaction (PCR); DNA and protein electrophoresis.

Assessment: Mid semester exam, final exam, posttest, presentation, written assignment, class participation, lab report, lab exam
