His cows have been calving since then and his herd is now on top. In addition to his own cattle, Archie looks after about 50 head that his father keeps on the farm, feeding them throughout the winter and keeping records of them. He has a filing cabinet full of records on the cattle and can quote the history of each head.
With the help of his father, young Madding now has 10 hectares of maize, 5.6 hectares of cotton, 30 hectares of hegari and kalfir, 16 hectares of broom maize, 6 hectares of sudan and sugar cane, and 10 hectares of sudan for pasture. The young farmer and rancher says he rarely makes breakfast for himself, but eats lunch at school and prepares his own dinner in the evening. He and his stepfather plan to irrigate some of their crops next year and have already started accumulating them.
Archie plans to continue building his own herd and one day buy his own farm or ranch. His immediate plans call for him to stay on the farm and attend Connors Agriculture College at Warner, just nine miles away.
ELECTRICITY IS WORKING
One of the first problems Vaszauskas faced was the need to rewire the electrical service in his nine poultry houses, and the need for improvements in the wiring of the farm's housing. His classmates volunteered to help with the planning and used the project as a hands-on lesson. As part of his work in commercial farming, Joe did a survey of the electrical wiring on their Wyoming farm and found it far from adequate.
Many will tell you that the enjoyment of the ponds alone will more than repay the investment. Ponds are also valuable for livestock watering, water conservation, wildlife, fire prevention and in some areas provide water for households and farms. A pond will be of little use unless it is large enough to provide you with the amount of water you need at the time you need it.
Before you start building a lake, you need to find out if you have a suitable site for the kind of lake you want. Layers of sand, gravel or rock will often allow the water to drain from the pond. Major factors affecting cost are the size of the dam, the length and height of the dam, the amount of debris to be removed, and its condition.
If the pond is in a pasture, a fence should be built around it to keep alive. There you can become a member of the college chapter and use your knowledge of parliamentary procedure, public speaking and other forms of leadership training. For some, this Chapter helps expand previous local activities; for others it is an introduction to FFA.
A highlight of this campus collaboration was a square dance co-sponsored with the Pre-Vet Club. The chapter designed and printed the programs and set up the backdrop for the stage that featured the university's centennial. A large window was placed on the campus, drawing attention to the training of rural youth and the vital part of the playineveryAmerican community.

Early on the day of the FFA tractor driver competition in Virginia last June, Jimmy Blackburn of the Stafford Chapter fell and injured his arm. Jimmy was so afraid that his advisors would pull him from the competition that he could no longer eat breakfast. So Jimmy went ahead and won the state competition on his own. With one hand, you see, because Jimmy was born with a missing left arm below the arch of the heel, and it was the stump of this arm that he had injured that morning.
