THERE is a bright agricultural future in the West, or so it would seem from the latest forecasts made by the Economic Research Service. By 1985 the wide open spaces of the West will have many more people and will be far short of the locally produced meat, poultry, dairy products, and flour to feed them. Economists specifically project that the meat and poultry deficit in 1960-61, already substantial at £1.3 billion, is. Production shortfalls in the West of milk and other dairy products will rise from 2.1 billion pounds to 3.1 billion in 1985—11 percent of the total. The deficit in the flour and rice group was to more or less double before 1985. The egg deficit of 15 percent will, however, be down to 13 percent in 1985.

The fuel level in the carburetor tank must be correct for satisfactory operation and economy. Possible causes of inadequate fuel level are bent or worn parts or a stuck or leaking float. Hold the free end of the hose next to the carburetor tank and the gasoline in it will rise to the same level as in the tank. If not, accurately measure the distance from the fuel level to the top of the tank, which is the surface where the cap gasket sits.
Check that the connection between the regulator and the carburetor is free and that the throttle stop screw is against the stop. Without changing the throttle position, you must adjust the idle mixture screw to achieve maximum idle speed. If the idle speed is now higher than recommended, you will need to readjust the stop screw to obtain the correct speed.
To finally check the idle settings, accelerate the engine and then reduce the speed to slow idle. Since the carburetor was set with the engine at normal operating temperature, the mixture will be too lean as the engine warms up.
