Crazy Mom’s Fashion

It started 20 years ago. One day, Jane Smith, a busy mom and a loving wife, went shopping for new clothes. After a few hours of searching, she came home exhausted and disappointed. In the mid-80s, only few manufacturers made clothes for women over thirty. “Thousands of women in England have the same problem, and I will help them,” – thought Mrs. Smith. With very little money, no connections in the fashion world and a husband who thought that her idea was crazy, the ambitious woman decided to start up her own business.
Jane designed her first collection of twenty clothing items, bought suitable material and sewing machines, and hired experienced tailors. The Smiths’ balcony turned into a workshop. When the collection was ready, Jane offered it to a famous chain of stores. To her surprise, they bought the whole collection at once. When they asked her about the name of her company, Jane looked at her husband, smiled and said: “Crazy Mom”. The word “Crazy” came up because at first her husband thought that her idea was crazy and “Mom” because she is a mother to four beautiful children.
Despite her crazy idea, all her collections were sold in a very short time – women liked Jane’s models. In a month, the manager of the chain ordered more clothes from “Crazy Mom” and Jane had to hire more people and find a bigger place for the workshop. The next step was opening her own shop at the central train station in Manchester.
Now “Crazy Mom” has 50 boutiques all over the world. Mr. Smith left his job as an engineer and became head of the company. Their four children also work in the company and, according to Jane, this is what makes the business so successful.

1.4 WRITING 1.4.1 Generating Ideas 1.4.1.1 Brainstorming skills
Brainstorming of ideas is the first step in writing an essay. Anything that comes into your mind should be listed down. Brainstorming can be done either individually or in groups.
The purpose of brainstorming is to think about and write down as many ideas that you have without having to worry about what is the suitability of the ideas and the organization.
If the session is conducted in a group, one person should be in charge to record all the ideas contributed by the members and share them with the other groups. It is important to note down all the ideas and at this stage, it is not the time to evaluate whether the ideas are suitable to be used or not.
Here is an example of notes from a brainstorming session about a person’s experience shopping at the new mall in town.
You may also brainstorm for the second or third time to generate more ideas.
1.4.1.2 Free writing
Free writing is almost similar to brainstorming. You may start with a word or phrase that is related to the topic. However, free writing requires you to write sentences which can be linked to one another and not only just by writing points. You do not have to worry about grammar, punctuation, or spelling because you will be the only one seeing the writing. The key idea of free writing is to write as much as you can without allowing yourself to stop. For those practising free writing, you will find some repeated words or phrases throughout the essay. Just let your ideas and imagination flow.
Here is an example of free writing. It is also about a person’s experience shopping at the new mall in town.

1.2 READING
Read the following passage and answer the short questions.
At these quirky restaurants, people come for the atmosphere and stay for the food. So here is the list;
1. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives
You do not need to waterproof your cellphones to take photos in here. As the restaurant located at the Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island Resort is a gorgeous and intimate underwater restaurant with 14-seat capacity, under more than 16 feet below sea level. Opened in 2005, the all-glass restaurant has a menu consisting of fresh seafood, beef rib eye veal, and other gourmet dishes. Enhanced in a transparent acrylic roof, the restaurant offers its diners a 270-degree panoramic view of sea creatures swimming in Maldives’s crystal clear waters. While a zinc paint coating protects Ithaa’s steel structure from corrosion, the saltwater and marine growths adhering to the paint will eventually break it down. Make a reservation while you still can.
2. Ninja New York, USA
In a review in the New York Times, Frank Bruni describes this restaurant as “a kooky, dreary subterranean labyrinth… You are greeted there by servers in black costumes who ceaselessly bow, regularly yelp and ever so occasionally tumble.” But do not worry, you would not need to defend yourself with your own kung fu move. You will dine amongst stealthy warriors – the waiters – who roam, romp, and perform tricks, all the while serving sushi and sake. Designed to look like a 15th century Japanese feudal village full of dark nooks and snaking passageways, just call it Japanese fare mixed with martial arts flair at its best.
3. Dinner in the Sky, Canada
Got an appetite for high altitude? And no, we are not talking about chowing down right before skydiving, although it should be on your bucket list. Originating in Belgium, the concept for this novelty-based mobile restaurant involves a crane hoisting guests, who are securely strapped into “dining chairs” 160 feet up in the air, along with a table, wait staff, and everything that is required to enjoy a meal floating above the ground, now in Montreal, Canada. Dinner in the Sky has gained popularity worldwide and is now offered for limited run periods in the cities around the globe.
4. Redwoods Treehouse, New Zealand
You already know about the magnificent sites in the Redwood National and State Parks in California, but the trees near Warkworth are famous for an entirely different reason. It is called Redwood Treehouse. It was built in 2008 in the pod-shaped structure and it is situated over 32 feet above the ground in a Redwood tree in the town of Warkworth, North of Auckland.
Diners access the venue via an elevated treetop walkway built of redwood milled on site. The striking venue is used for exclusively for private functions and events, with a capacity of 30 guests.
5. Cat Café Nekorobi, Japan
If watching cat videos gets you in a good mood, this unusual coffee shop will make you swoon with joy and cuteness. Nekorobi is a hip cat café in the entertainment district of Ikebukuro where you can spend time with friends of the feline kind. Patrons enter through modern glass doors into a dimly lit joint where cats prowl and sprawl out, and where a drinks dispenser vending machine offers a variety of hot and cold beverages including coffee, royal milk tea, green tea, and instant miso soup. Visit in the evening and you will have a chance to witness the dinnertime ritual where the kitties feast on cat food in glass food bowls arranged in a circle around a floor lamp. For feline lovers, this place is no doubt the

● If you were given a chance to try extreme leisure activity, what is it and where is the location? Why?
1.2 READING
Read the following passage and answer the short questions.
Importance of Leisure
Leisure is the spare time when one has nothing specific to do, no work to occupy his time and, hence, one is not in a hurry. Like some of the people, they go to cinema for movie watching when they have nothing to do or they are just free from any work. These are extrovert people. For introvert people, most of them like to spend time on reading books, magazines, articles or novels. Some people might say that leisure is not vital to them but unfortunately it is important for every person. It gives 5
There are people who would like to idle away their time on gateways, for their leisure too short to be spent on anything more meaningful than yawning, dozing, enjoying siesta, gossiping and playing cards. This way they get only more bored and when they get back to their work, they are anything but refreshed. There are still others who retire into a solitary nook and mope about brooding on their frustrating experiences or on the monotony of their routine work. This is not the right way of spending time for leisure, for its aim is not to become willing prey to boredom. The importance of leisure lies in overcoming the sickening influences of boredom.
15
Often the students are found revising their lessons, the others looking their office files at their leisure, for they think they should utilize their free time. They do not understand what the importance of leisure is so that is a pity for them for not knowing what to do to fulfill their leisure time. It is the time to recharge yourself whenever you are in leisure.
20
What then should one do at his leisure? It depends on the length of time. If the leisure is but a few hours, or a day or two, it is not possible to make plans for spending it in some way or other. For example, we cannot think of using the leisure between evening when we get back home and the time when we usually go to bed. Even for Sundays we cannot make much of a plan, for the Mondays are always there staring us in the face.
25
We can think of going sight-seeing in the countryside. We should understand the importance of listening to birds’ songs and lying down on the green field. However, for a day or two, it is difficult to find the patch of green where we can lie down under the caressing, cool shades of trees in the neighbourhood. So, it is better to stay where we are and to spend our day with the family and friends. We can even look beyond our cramped existence and organize community programmes for amusements and entertainments.
30
35 But, when we have real vacations, we can plan on our leisure more fruitfully.
We can go holidaying and spend days together in the midst of nature – relaxing, enjoying and renewing our relationship with our estranged mother. As there is little hurry, we can explore all the avenues of happiness and thus, get away from the sickening worries of our everyday life. We can even choose to get ourselves involved in some rewarding pursuits, making life more meaningful. This way leisure can be used to leave us happier and richer, not only relaxed and refreshed.

1.2 READING
Read the following passage and answer the short questions.
Country Life versus City Life
City living and country living have a wide range of differences and similarities.
Every day new people enter each and call it their home. When living in the city, you are an on-the-go kind of person and enjoy the world at a fast rhythm. In contrast, a country living style is slow and calm.
Today we make important decisions when deciding where to live. For instance, this is not a decision that is always easy to make. There are many things that you need to take into consideration. Like do you want your neighbours to be close, do you like to listen to the noise and traffic of the city? Do not forget to consider your job, drive time and pets if you have or want them. For many people, this is one of the many important decisions they will ever have to make.
While living in the city, you have numerous things to do: the opportunities are endless. On any given night, you can walk around and enjoy the wonders of the city: the sights and the sounds take your breath away at all times. Nothing is more entertaining than walking on the pavement with other pedestrians, reading billboards or checking road signs, and watching cars pour from all corners and stop at traffic lights.
The city also has many different places to go to. Nice and expensive shops attract many tourists. There are a lot of restaurants too where you can get a casual or formal dinner; any way to enjoy yourself. If you are a city-dweller, you are always around much excitement. As far as I am concerned, living in the city gives people a special feeling of superiority because of the nice shops, centres and modern architecture.
Although the city seems to have a lot of great things, the country can offer as much satisfaction as well. The country is a marvelous place to live in. It offers a very relaxing feeling, and it is filled with magnificent views and scenery. Rural towns offer more open space than cities and are not overcrowded.
The country can also maybe help you become a more independent and active person. You can buy a small piece of land, plough it and put some seeds in order to grow your own vegetables. This way you collect your own crops, and eat and live in a very healthy way. In addition, being in the countryside makes you more of an outdoor person often enjoying the voices and wild places of nature. Not everyone is suited to the city life and not everyone has the desire to live permanently in the countryside. It is a matter of perspective and personal point of view.

1.4 WRITING
1.4.1 Writing an essay
An essay is a piece of structured writing several paragraphs long instead of just one or two paragraphs. It is written about one topic, just as a paragraph is. However, the topic of an essay is too complex to discuss in one paragraph. Therefore, an essay is divided into several paragraphs, one for each major point by adding an introduction and a conclusion.
An essay has three main parts:
1. Introduction paragraph.
2. Body paragraphs (at least one, but usually two or more paragraphs).
3. Conclusion paragraph.
Structure of Five-paragraph Essay
1. INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH
2. BODY
PARAGRAPHS
* Concluding sentence for body paragraphs in an essay is not always necessary
3. CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH
The first paragraph of an essay is the introduction. The introduction paragraph consists of two parts:
1. General statement
● Introduces the topic of the essay
● Gives background information on the topic
The first sentence in an introduction paragraph should be very general comment about the subject. The purpose is not only to introduce the topic of the essay, but also to grab the reader's attention. Each subsequent should become more specific than the previous one and finally lead into the thesis statement.
2. Thesis statement
● States the main topic of the whole essay.
● Often states the specific subdivisions of the topic or subtopics (topic sentences) of the essay (there is NO NEED to explain each subtopic because the subtopics will be discussed in detail in the body paragraphs).
● May indicate the method of organization of the entire essay (meaning, which subtopic will be discussed first, second and so on).
● Is usually the last sentence in the introduction paragraph.
General statements
Thesis statement
Example of an introduction paragraph:
In this world every person lives in a society and all are bound to a neighbourhood.
Neighbourhood is very important and it does definitely have an impact on what we are and how and where we live in. Every neighbourhood is superior for every person. I too live in a great and wonderful neighbourhood. For example I live in Bukit Banyan and I feel proud to stay in my neighbourhood. I saw so many neighbourhoods, but I find my neighbourhood is better than others (General statement). I really love my neighbourhood because it is a quiet, safe place and the neighbours are helpful (Thesis statement).
Subtopic 1: quiet neighbourhood Subtopic 2: safe place
Subtopic 3: helpful neighbours
1.4.1.2 Body paragraphs
There are three main parts of the body paragraph; topic sentence (at the beginning), supporting sentence(s) (in the middle) and concluding sentence (at the end). A body paragraph discusses a subtopic of the whole essay;
Body paragraph 1: subtopic 1
Body paragraph 2: subtopic 2 Body paragraph 3: subtopic 3
Structure of a Body Paragraph
Topic sentence ______________________________________
Supporting sentence(s) _______________________________________
_______________________________________
_______________________________________
_______________________________________
Concluding sentence
(optional) _______________________________________
Example of a body paragraph:
First of all, my neighbourhood is quiet (Topic sentence). Even though it has the regular amount of noise of any place, there are many peaceful moments. For example, after most people have gone to work, you can hardly hear any noise. Of course, when the kids get home, there is more noise; but, it is relatively quiet all day in my neighbourhood (Supporting sentences). That is one of the reasons why I really love my neighbourhood (Concluding sentence).
1.4.1.3 Conclusion paragraph
The last paragraph of an essay is the conclusion. It should reinforce the thesis statement, by helping readers to better understand of what he or she has already read and provide a sense of closure or ending of the essay. When writing the conclusion paragraph, make sure to:
a. use words such as ‘in summary’, ‘in conclusion’, ‘in short’, ‘all in all’, ‘in brief ’, ‘in other words’, ‘on the whole’, ‘to conclude’, ‘to sum up’ to begin the first conclusion sentence.
b. restate the thesis statement by using different words or sentences (as long as the meaning is retain).
c. summarize the subtopics and the main points only (no need to mention everything).
d. show how important the subtopics are and why they are important to be mentioned again in the conclusion.
e. make the finals comments in the form of suggestion, prediction or quotation that can leave some impacts on the reader.
Example of a conclusion paragraph:
In conclusion, everyone’s neighbourhood is beautiful and precious to them. Similarly, I also think my neighbourhood is beautiful and I love it. There is not a lot of noise, it is secure, and most of all, the neighbours are good. For now, I do not plan to leave or move my neighbourhood. If in the future I have to leave my neighbourhood for any reason that day will be very sad for me. There is no place like home and that is my neighbourhood.

National Day celebration
“Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” Each year the shouts of independence echo from every nook and corner of the country on August 31 to mark “Merdeka Day” or Independence Day. “Merdeka” celebration is held throughout the country of Malaysia on the occasion of Malaysian Independence Day. The 31stday of August witnesses a myriad of parades, cultural performances and street shows. Merdeka Celebrations have been held with grandeur for over 50 years, since 1957.
Celebrations include parades involving uniformed personnel, corporate players, school children, cultural dancers, athletes and Malaysians from all walks of life.
The 'Merdeka Celebration' was a month long commemorative event which drew great participation from all students in SMK Sultan Sulaiman. It was held successfully last weekend. Activities held during the day were talks, marching band, exhibitions, community works, singing of patriotic songs and others.
The colourful and joyous one-hour parade marching past the road kicked off at about 8am. The participants comprising of school band, students, and teachers. The parade started with marching band echoing the drum beats of patriotic melody. The spectators applauded when the group of students and teachers began to march past. The students and teachers were dressed completely in “Baju Melayu”
and “Baju Kurung”, the Malaysian’s national clothes.
All students and teachers were assembled on the school field. The principal pronounced a speech and officially inaugurated the ceremony. The head prefect then raised the “Jalur Gemilang” flag. The national anthem "Negaraku" was then played. The students then gave spirited renditions of patriotic songs such as
"Jalur Gemilang", "Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang" and the Merdeka celebration theme song "Malaysiaku Gemilang".
Then, the students were asked to go to the school hall as the assembly ended. The hall turned into a kaleidoscope of colours as the hall presentation comprising 500 performers, a choir, cultural shows and the other performances got underway. The cultural shows were from many races like Malay, Chinese, and Indian.
The students were really fascinated by the magnificent shows. The pupils gave a good attention to the amazing singing and the eye-catching traditional dances.
The shows continued by the rhythmic gymnastics presented by the well-trained students. The purpose of this show is to give some patriotic spirit on celebrating the National Day to the students. The music was played during the performance. The picturesque performances look even more interesting and colourful when the gymnast rolled the ribbons and the hoops and tossed the balls to the others.
The time carried on creeping and it was 12 in the afternoon. Then, the principal gave some speech of hope and wished that the celebration would be occurred again in the next year and the forthcoming year. The teachers and the students departed the hall, symbolically ended the ceremony.

1.4 WRITING 1.4.1 Revise the essay
After writing an essay, the next step is to revise it. When you revise, you change what you have written in order to improve it. You check it over for content and organization, including unity, coherence and logic. You can change, rearrange, add or delete, all for the goal of communicating your thoughts more clearly and in an interesting way. While you are writing, always ask yourself:
● Are my details clear? (Correct terms, facts or numbers, reasons, anecdotes and examples)?
● Should I add or take out parts?
● Is the writing in sensible and logical order?
● Read it aloud - Should I read it aloud?
Here is how to proceed:
● After completing your writing essay, put it away for awhile. It is hard to think about changing and correcting your work immediately after you finish writing an essay.
● Read over your paragraph carefully and check to see whether you have achieved your purpose.
● Check for unity. Cross out any sentence that does not support your topic sentence.
● Study its organization, word choice and details. You will probably find things to omit and think of some things to add. Be certain that each paragraph gives reader enough information to understand the main idea. If the main point lacks sufficient information, make notes in the margin such as “add more details” or “add an example”.
● Then, make a clean copy before going any further. Do not stop revising until you are satisfied with (or even proud of) what you have produced.
