But, it mostly depends on directed cognitive effort, which includes knowledge of and regulation of cognitive processing.”14 According to Mikulecky, then understanding means understanding a text that is read by connecting ideas in the text with what the reader has known before. 15. Kendeou stated that "comprehension is our ability to mentally connect different events in the text and form a coherent one. So we can conclude that reading comprehension means a process of understanding a reading text we read, we should be able to recall any information contained therein.

Then the obtained information will be coordinated with the basic knowledge of the reader to understand the content of the text.

Student’s Reading Ability in Comprehending Written Texts

When we read books, magazines, newspapers or writings in public places, we must have the understanding to extract information from them. Moreover, understanding mental action and memory as parts of it are said to be associated with it.19 Subsequently, Cline et al. stated that reading skill is the way to extract importance from the content. Based on the above theories, it can be concluded that reading skill is the physical and mental activity of interpreting written texts that involves the body parts and our memory.

PORPE Strategy

Based on the above theories, it can be concluded that the PORPE has some advantages to improve students' ability in understanding written texts, namely: can improve students' cognitive and metacognitive awareness, and can stimulate students' ability to understand key concepts to synthesize, analyze and think about it. The teacher's role here is to help students synthesize, analyze, and apply questions correctly. Then, as a follow-up, the teacher should provide an example of the thought process in preparing (predicting) and drafting essay questions about the amount of information previously learned.

Students can write down the results of their thoughts in predicting and composing and memorizing essay questions and answers previously obtained.

Descriptive Text

The active learning approach is the transition from the concept of teacher-centered learning (teacher-centered learning) to the concept. The use of online learning has been increasing due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020. Second, a study was conducted in 2019 by Saiful et al., which aims to determine whether the use of PORPE strategies has a significant effect on improving students' literal, interpretive, and critical understanding, as well as on students' metacognitive consciousness.

Hypothesis

From the explanation of the above figure, it appeared that the pre-test score was lower than the post-test score. Based on the results of the data and discussion in chapter 4, the researcher drew the conclusion.

RESEARCH METHOD

Population and Sample

A population is a group of individuals or organizations that have the same characteristics that are used as objects in a study.46 The population of this study was students in class X IBB and X IPS 4 in the first semester at SMAN 4 Kota Bengkulu in the academic year 2020. The sample is a subgroup of the target population that is generalized to be studied subsequently.47 This research used students in two classes as an experimental group and a control group.

The Research Instrument

In the question paper, there were several descriptive reading texts that students must understand in order to answer the questions.

Validity and Reliability

The total score students received if they answered all the questions correctly was 100 marks, with 5 marks for each question. Based on the validity test result, 22 out of 30 items are valid and the level of reliability can be tested. A reliability test is a stage for testing the consistency of an instrument in measuring what it purports to measure.

Before searching for the value of r11, the researcher counted the value of S2 using this variance formula: To determine the confidence level of the r11 value results, the researcher matched the r11 value to the following reliability criteria:49.

The Technique of Data Collection

Treatment is the process of providing material related to the research objective. The post-test is the final test that aims to know the result of the reading comprehension ability of the students after the treatment. The results are compared with the pre-test results to know the effect on the reading comprehension ability of the students.

The Technique of Data Analysis

A homogeneity test is a test performed to determine whether two or more groups of sample data come from a population that has the same variance (homogeneous). If the significance value (p) > 0.05, it means that the groups from the population have the same variance (homogeneous). If the significance value (p) is <0.05, it means that the population groups have different variances (they are not homogeneous).

The basis for determining the independent sample t-test is based on the significance value (two-tailed), which measures the presence or absence of a mean difference in the test subjects. a) If the value of significance (two-sided) > 0.05 indicates that there is no significant effect on students' reading skills among the researchers (H0 accepted). If the significance value (two-sided) is <0.05, it means that there is any effect on students' reading skills among the research subjects (Ha accepted). In addition, the effect on students' test results can also be measured by comparing the t count and t table values.

If the value of t score t table, its mean H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means that there was any effect on student's reading ability among the experimental class and the control class.

Research Procedures

Based on the table above, it can be seen that the output of the test of homogeneity of variance (based on mean/sig.) was 0.460> 0.05. After conducting the test, the researcher tested the validity and reliability of the instrument. This can be concluded by looking at the results of the hypothesis testing done previously.

The results of the pretest and posttest in the experimental and control classes showed that there was some effect on students' reading skills in understanding descriptive texts among students who were taught using the PORPE strategy and who were not on SMAN 4 Kota Bengkulu sat. Therefore, based on all the results of the research and the above hypothesis testing results, the researcher has declared that the research problem has been answered.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Discussion

Based on the results of the first and second tasks, quite a few students were able to understand the descriptive text well based on their ability to find essay questions and their answers in the text based on their understanding. activity in the treatment is registered in documentation. Based on the results of the post-tests that have been conducted in both classes, it found that there was some significant increase in the average score of students in the experimental class.
