This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between English learning motivation and students speaking ability. After testing both variables, apparently, the results obtained are there is no relationship between English learning motivation and students speaking ability.

Research Question

Thus, the researcher is interested in seeing directly this phenomenon by researching to find the positive correlation between motivation and English speaking ability in second-grade students of SMPN 1 Ajung. The researcher also wanted to know how far the contribution of English learning motivation is to students' speaking ability.

Research Objective

Research Significance

The researcher also wanted to know how far the contribution of English learning motivation is to students' speaking ability.. a) The result of this research hopes that it will be useful for the teacher to find out what the current students’ motivation is like and to know the. It is also hoped that the results of this study can be an additional reference for other researchers who will discuss similar topics.

Scope of the Research

Definition of Key Term

Previous Research

Correlation between Students’ Motivation and Their Speaking Achievement at English Department of Halu Oleo University”. Hubungan antara Motivasi Siswa terhadap Kemampuan Berbicara Bahasa Inggris” .. relationship between motivation and speaking ability.

Research Novelty

Speaking Ability

Furthermore, Andriyani states that speaking skills are the ability to communicate with the target language which consists of the target speaking, there are accuracy, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and understanding.31 It means that a good speaker is produced when people can speak well to communicate until the listeners can understand the meaning and use language correctly according to the language target. Good speakers can be determined by those who convey messages to their listeners well according to language aspects and do not cause misunderstandings. Meanwhile, speaking ability in this research is an ability possessed by students so that they can communicate and describe things well according to the topic that will be given by the researcher.

Their speaking ability will be measured according to the speaking aspects, there are, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. 32Azlina Kurniati,“A Study on the Speaking Ability of the Second Year Students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru,” (October. According to the assessment of speaking ability by J.B. Heaton who shows that the highest value from a speaker is the one who has the following speaking character.33.

However, assessing speaking ability is not like the assessment of other language skills, because this ability can only be assessed orally. According to Heaton, the types of oral production test instruments include reading aloud, conversational exchanges, a picture for assessment, interviews, and other oral examinations.34. By giving students several picture cards to choose one of them then they have to answer the picture, to find out the extent of their speaking ability.

Hypothesis

The test is given a series of situations and asked to arrange sentences on a certain pattern line or group of patterns. A single picture can be used to test the production of significant phoneme contrast, while pictures of a scene or event can be used to check total oral skills. Hypothesis Null (Ho): There is no significant relationship between motivation in learning English and the speaking ability of second-grade students SMPN 1 Ajung.

Hypothesis Alternative (Ha): There is a significant relationship between motivation in learning English and the speaking ability of second-grade students SMPN 1 Ajung.

Techniques of Collecting Data and Instrument

The instrument for Collecting Data a. Questionnaire

It consists of 10 intrinsic motivation questions (shown in table 3.2) and 10 extrinsic questions (shown in table 3.3), but the researcher wants to change some of the question items in it to suit the situation and conditions around students, and change them to Indonesian. From the questionnaire above, it will then be distributed via Google form to facilitate data collection and shorten the time. The picture for assessment is an oral test that is used to assess how far the students speaking by assessing the meaning of the picture presented.

From the sentences they created, they are required to answer the picture according to the aspects of speaking (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension). In addition, the assessment used is the target value that has been adapted from the target of the oral test assessment by JB Heaton then the results of the oral test were assessed by the researcher subjectively. In other words, the validity test aims to determine the suitability of the measuring instrument for the question item.38.

The validity level of the question items can be seen from the correlation value between each question item and the resulting total score. Thertable value can be seen in the guidelines for the distribution of the rtable value of 5% with the number of respondents (N) used. The questionnaire in this study contained 20 items that were adapted from the MREQ by Komiyama, using a five Likert scale assessment, they are: Strongly Agree (Sangat setuju), Agree (Setuju), Undecided (Ragu-ragu), Disagree (Tidak setuju), Strongly Disagree (Sangat tidak setuju).

Hypothesis Testing a. Prerequisite Test

There is a Pearson Product-moment test which can be used if the data are normally distributed, at least on an interval or ratio scale and the Spearman Rank test which can be used if the data is nominal and ordinal scale.43. If the test results are normally distributed, then a parametric test can be performed using the Pearson Product-moment correlation formula. If the test results are abnormally distributed, then a non-parametric test can be performed using the Spearman Rank correlation formula.44.

There is a Pearson Product-moment test developed by Karl Pearson and the Spearman Rank test developed by Charles Spearman. The data collected can be analyzed by calculating the Pearson Product-moment formula that assisted with SPSS type 20. Then the Spearman Rank test can be used as an alternative when the prerequisite test does not achieve.47 The data collected can be analyzed by calculating the Spearman Rank formula that assisted with SPSS type 20.

Furthermore, the significance value can be seen from the results of the correlation coefficient obtained.48. If the prerequisite test is achieved, then the correlation test used is the Pearson product-moment. However, if the prerequisite test does not achieve, then the correlation test used is Spearman rank.49.

Data Description

  • Analysis of Data Collection a. Validity Test
  • Validity Test of the Learning Motivation Instrument
  • Validity Test of the Speaking Ability Instrument
  • Reliability Test of the Learning Motivation Instrument
  • Reliability Test of the Speaking Ability Instrument
  • Hypothesis Testing

Students are called to the front and are allowed to choose one of the cards that contain a pictorial dialogue with the asking-for-attention material that they have learned in the previous meeting. After testing both variables, the total score of the student's learning motivation and speaking ability was finally collected. Validity test is used to determine the suitability of the instrument used by researchers to measure and obtain research data from respondents.

The . decision-making is based on the comparison of the r count value with the r table. How to find the value of the r table with N=55 at 5% . significance in the distribution of statistical r table values. It can be seen from table 4.2 that all question items for the learning motivation variable are valid because the r count value > r table is 0,266.

The analysis prerequisite test is used to find out either the data to be tested qualified for the calculation of the hypothesis test. This test is used because it can dictate the magnitude and direction of the contribution of the independent variables to the dependent variable in the form of categories or rankings. Hypothesis testing is formulated with the criteria for rejection or acceptance of the hypothesis in accordance with the results of calculations in the SPSS program.

Discussion

The results obtained at the Sig value of 0.224 with a correlation coefficient of 0.167, thus it is stated that there is no significant relationship between the two variables. Therefore, Ho with the statement "there is no significant relationship between motivation in learning English and students' speaking ability" is accepted. In addition, it has a very weak correlation category seen from the correlation coefficient value obtained.

The success or failure of achieving educational goals depends a lot on how the learning process is experienced by students as a learner and how to grow their motivation.2 Therefore, when students succeed in growing their learning motivation but not with good results, errors can occur in the learning process. As stated by Nia Juniarti, explained about students' learning motivation was not following their abilities. She said that this could be due to the influence of the student's learning process, like their attitude, laziness, lack of time, underestimating the task, and environment.3.

An article by Reza Amarta Prayoga stated that cities make English flow to the current that grows together with the urge to migrate which is the cultural identity of the metropolitan environment.4 Supported by complete learning facilities, it will enable students to be more proficient in developing their abilities, so it became a factor in the absence of a relationship between English learning motivation and the speaking ability of second-grade students SMPN 1 Ajung. It states that the magnitude of the correlation coefficient is in the direction of which means it is very weak or uncorrelated.
