STUDENTS’ MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES IN ONLINE LEARNING
Potrik Galurisma 112018076
ABSTRACT
Motivation is a key factor in determining people behavior and accomplishment in a variety of contexts, particularly in education. Students employ a range of strategies to motivate themselves in the learning process while attending school. It is important to recognize that these strategies may differ when adapting from face-to-face learning to online learning. In contrast, online learning presents unique challenges that require students to adapt their motivational strategies.
The lack of in person contacts, reliance on digital platforms and the possibility of additional distractions can impact students’ motivation. Students may need to adopt new strategies in this situation to maintain motivation. The researcher is interested in conducting study in this area.
This study aimed to find out the students’ motivational strategies during online learning. The data for the study are collected through questionnaires to 73 participants, grade three senior high school students at SMA Laboratorium UKSW Salatiga. The questionnaires consist of two parts including open-ended and closed-ended questions. The data were classified using ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) Theory. This study showed the result of the most strategies that students use during online learning are Satisfaction in open-ended questions and Attention in closed-ended questions. The implications of those two strategies are: first, creating a positive and engaging online learning environment is essential for student Satisfaction.
It can be achieved by incorporating interactive activities, multimedia resources and encouraging student collaboration. Also, it is crucial to support students’ Attention and focus on online learning. This can be done by effective instructional design, clear instructions and minimizing distractions.
