ABSTRACT

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has reached nearly every country in the world. It causes all Indonesian educational institutions to be placed on lockdown for an unknown period.

However, some students felt struggled with online classes. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze university students' struggles in online speaking classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants of this study were six students from Angkatan 2020 who had taken the Speaking for Social Purposes Class. The data were collected qualitatively using semi-structured interviews to get in-depth information from the participants. The findings revealed five factors that contributed to the struggles. Those are an unstable internet connection, speaking anxiety, lecturer strategy in teaching-learning, assessment, and the incompatibility of group mates during group works. The strategy to overcome those struggles for students was to set up the device, go to the internet cafe or another place, be calm, inform lecturers or friends, and create a good atmosphere in the breakout room.
