The Effectiveness of Using Skimming Technique to Improve Students Reading Comprehension (A Pre-Experimental Study at the Eight Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Barru) a thesis of English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, Supervised By Nur Qalby and Ratu Yulianti Natsir.

This research aimed to find out the effectiveness of using skimming technique to improve the students reading comprehension in term of contents of the text especially in literal comprehension at eight grade of SMP Negeri 3 Barru.

The researcher used a pre experimental research. This research consisted of six meetings include treatment with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was taking by purposive sampling technique and the total number of sample was 27 students in class 8.1.

The researcher findings indicated that skimming technique was effective to improve studens’ reading comprehension. The result of the data indicated that, there was difference between students’ pre-test and post-test. The mean score of post-test (59.25) was higher than the mean score of pre-test (37.77). From t-test, the researcher found that, the value of t-test (7.263) wash higher than t-table (1.705) at the level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) =26. Result shows that t-test value for the final score of students reading comprehension was (7.263>1.705). It means that there was signifficant difference between the students reading comprehension before and after using skimming technique. It also said that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher conclude that, skimming technique was effective in improving the students reading comprehension.
