ABSTRACT

IRAWATI, 2016. The Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning Strategyin Improving Speaking Skill. Under the Thesis of English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University. Guided by St.Asriati andAmar Ma’ruf.

The objectives of the research were to find out the improvement of the students’ speaking accuracy and fluency through the use of Problem-Based Learning Strategy at the Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bengo Kab.Bone.

This research used Classroom Action Research that consisted two cycles. The research population was the Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bengo Kab.

Bone academic year 2016/2017. The sample of this research consisted of 22 students .The researcher obtained the data by using speaking test and observation.

The result of this research indicated that the improvement of the students’

speaking accuracy from D-Test to cycle I and cycle I to cycle II. In D-Test the students’ mean score achievement in speaking accuracy was 5.1, but after evaluation in cycle I the students’ speaking accuracy improved to 6.6 and in cycle II, the students’ mean score improved to 8.0 classified as good. While the improvement of the students’ speaking fluency from D-Test to cycle I and cycle I to cycle II. In D- Test the students’ mean score achievement in speaking fluency was 5.0, but after evaluation in cycle I the students’ speaking fluency improved to 6.6 and in cycle II, the students’ mean score improved to 8.0 classified as good.

Therefore, the result of the research could be concluded that the students’

speaking skill through the use of Problem-Based Learning Strategy at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bengo Kab.Bone was improving and significantly affected.The speaking skill improved to good level after test in the second cycle.
