School of Nursing

The School of Nursing is one of several baccalaureate professional health programs located at the Medical Center. At the beginning of the second year, students who have earned no less than a C grade average (2.0) and are approved by the school are certified to the School of Nursing at the Medical Center. By action of the Trustees and the administrative officers of Indiana University, the School of Nursing opened in 1914 as the Indiana University Training School for Nurses.

The theoretical courses were conducted by faculty members of the Faculty of Medicine, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Training School. The school's name was officially changed from the Nurses' Training School to the School of Nursing in 1956. The School of Nursing is a member agency of the Division of Baccalaureate and Postsecondary Programs of the National League for Nursing.

Central State Hospital has nearly 2,500 beds and is dedicated to the care of the mentally ill. In the fall and spring of the freshman year, all nursing students are invited to the School of Nursing to familiarize themselves with the facilities and to be measured for the student nurse uniform. Immediately before the first semester of the second year, all students come to the School of Nursing for additional orientation.

The School of Nursing accepts married students and allows students to marry at any time, provided they maintain the standards of the School. Written consent from the parents or guardian must be presented to the Dean of the School at the time the student indicates the intention to marry. An organization of which all students are members is the Student Faculty Government of the School of Nursing.

This organization is part of the Indiana Association of Nursing Students and the National Student Nurses' Association. Graduates of the School of Nursing may become members of the Alumni Association of Indiana University and the Nurses' Alumnae Association by paying annual dues ($6). Students withdraw from the exam at the end of the semester in which their cumulative average is C (2.0) in the courses that make up the nursing major. These distinctions are usually awarded to the top ten percent of the graduating class.

Basic Professional Curriculum

The professional nursing courses begin in the first semester of the second year and continue throughout the rest of the program. A general introduction to the basic structure of the human body which the student will be able to adapt and apply to the specific problems in his field of interest. Laboratory study of demonstration dissections and other illustrative material is integrated through disc:uuion and lectures.

For chemistry majors and others who intend to continue their chemistry studies beyond the first year. The goals are: to learn thoughtful and intensive reading; to acquaint the student with some of the aesthetic values ​​inherent in literature; and make the student aware of the pleasure that can be derived from reading. A brief general introduction to the nature of government and its various forms and modern theories of its function, followed by a specific treatment of the origin and nature of the American federal system and its present party basis.

Introduction to philosophical problems through the study of the following philosophical classics: Plato, M•no;. The study of the development of behavior in infancy, childhood, and adolescence, including the investigation of factors that influence different types of behavior. The study of personality and its development; it.I's relationship to culture and communication and to the social environments in which people live; deviant species.

The areas are considered in relation to the nature of the problem and in relation to the larger society's structure and values. A course designed to help students gain an understanding of the physiological effects of drugs and their therapeutic uses, as well as the role of the nurse in the administration of drugs and the need for continuous investigation of drug therapy. A survey of food nutrients for the normal diet with modifications to include food habits of cultural and religious groups and for applications to the family according to members' age, income, meal patterns, and food preferences.

A study of the general principles of microbiology with emphasis on host-parasite relationships, including the relationship between specific microorganisms and disease and related preventive measures. A course designed to help students understand and meet the nursing needs of the child and his family in health and illness with experience in clinic, hospital and nursery school. This course includes principles considered essential to or inherent in the promotion of mental health and the treatment and rehabilitation of the mentally ill.

Emphasizes interrelationships between newcomer, patient, family, community, and psychiatric team members, and focuses special attention on the therapeutic role of the psychiatric nurse. A consideration of administrative principles as guidelines for action in beginning leadership positions in nursing with opportunity for application of the principles through guided experience in selected clinical areas.
