ABSTRACT
Suriati Daim. The Influence of Reading Habits on Students’ Speaking Skill at the Tenth Grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang. (Survised by Hj. Nurhamdah and Drs. Amzah).
The objectives of the research are: 1) To know the students’ reading habits at the tenth grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang. 2) To know the students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang. 3) To find out the influence of reading habits on students’
speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang.
The method used in this research is survey with correlation analysis, it connects between data showing reading habits with the data showing students’ speaking skill.
The data about reading habits is gathered by questionnaire which is conducted by the writer, while the data about students’ speaking skill is gathered by conducting speaking test.
The result of students’ reading habits is in the very good category. This is in accordance with the result of the questionnaires data analysis given to 30 respondents.
This result proved that is 2597 : 2100 = 124 of the criteria set. While, the result of students’ speaking skill is in the good classification with the result obtained from the students’ speaking skill is 77. The result of this research show that there is an insignificant influence of reading habits on students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang with the value of 𝑅𝑡𝑎𝑏 value was bigger than 𝑅ℎ𝑖𝑡 value indicates that there is no any influence of reading habits on students’ speaking skill. The level of significant = 0.5% then the value of 𝑅𝑡𝑎𝑏 = 0.374 while the value of 𝑅ℎ𝑖𝑡 = 0.155, it could be concluded that the null hypothesis (𝐻𝑜) was accepted and alternative hypothesis (𝐻𝐼) was rejected. It meant that there is no any influence of reading habits on students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 8 Pinrang.
