2INTRODUCTION
Students of English major learn four basic skills of language such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. At advanced stage, they are given the subjects which they can apply what they got about English. For instance, they learn how to apply their skills in translating English text in basic translation class. Translation requires a high level proficiency. Someone cannot translate well unless he mastered both of the source language and receptor language.
Translation is the act of transferring meaning from one language into their equivalence in other language. According to Munday (2001:4) explain that, “Translation it‟s self has several meanings: it can refer to the general subject field, the product (the text that has been translated) or the process (the act of producing the translation, otherwise known as translating)”. It means that translation can be defined as the product or the text that has been translated by translator and it can be defined as the process or deed that has been done by translator to get closes meaning with the target language.
Moreover, Newmark (1991:27) points out that act of translating not only transferring the meaning of one language or all of part of a text from source language into target language, but the translator should be more attention the meaning equivalence, identity, similarity, likeness, sameness, correspondence of both languages. It means that translation not just transferring meaning from source language into target language. Moreover, important to know by the translator should pay more attention with equivalence and close meaning of source language with target language.
In basic translation class the students discussed a practice of translation words, phrase, clause, sentence and discourse. Therefore, they have to master in translating them. Language contains several elements such as word, phrase and sentence. There are three types of sentence, simple, compound and complex sentences. As we know, compound sentence consist two simple sentences that are linked by a comma and coordinating conjunction such as and, but, for, nor, or, so and yet.
According to Werner and Spaventa (2007:11) states that,” compound sentences are sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction:
and, but, for, nor, or, so and yet”. He explains that compound sentence consist of two sentences that are linked by a comma and also coordinating conjunctions. Then, Alexander (1990:8) has different opinion with other experts. He argues,”
when we join two or more simple sentences, we make a compound sentence and we use conjunction or comma to joining the words”. It means compound sentence consist of two or more simple sentence, a comma and a coordinating conjunction.
In addition, according to Knapp and Watkins (2005:64) admits, “in compound sentences there are two or more clauses that are coordinated or linked in such a way as to give each equal status as a statement”. It means that there are two or more clauses that are linked in a way to give its sense. In here, clauses that are coordinated by coordinating conjunctions make complete idea.
Based on the researcher‟s observation in basic translation class, the researcher found there are some problems that are faced by the students in translating a sentence especially in compound sentences like some of them still confused in determine appropriate meaning of words because most of them less understand about situation context of the sentences. We can see an example of compound sentence that is taken from the text which is given by researcher to the students, „The trail to Supai village is hot and dusty’, the students translated as „Jalan ke kampung Supai panas dan berdebu’. In this sentence, the students should pay more attention on lexicon or appropriate meaning of word „trail‟ is ‘Jalan setapak’ and situation context of source language in order to the meaning of source language can be equivalent with the target language.
Moreover, some of the students less understand in translating coordinating conjunction. For example, ’They aren’t smilling, yet they don’t seem unfriendly.’ In this sentence, most of students still confused about function of yet which is to show contrast or join opposites.
So, they translated second clause as ‘namun mereka terlihat tidak ramah’. The students should translate it as ‘Mereka tidak senyum, namun mereka tidak kelihatan tidak ramah’.
3 The purpose of this research is to
investigate students‟ ability and to investigate students‟ problem in tanslating compound sentences at basic translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in academic year 2015/2016.
RESEARCH METHOD
In this research, the researcher used descriptive research design of quantitative approach. According to Lehmann in Yusuf (2007:83) descriptive research concludes fact, situation, and phenomenon that happen at the time and present it with reality. Issac and Michael in Yusuf (2007:83) stated that descriptive research was aimed to describe systematically the facts and characteristic of a given population or area interest. In this research, the researcher will try to determine and describes students‟ ability in translating compound sentences at basic translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in academic year 2015/2016 and describe students‟ problems that faced by the students.
In this study, the source of data is document of students‟ translation test. These documents were made by students of 2014 at Basic Translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumbar. In this research, the researcher will take population from three classes at basic translation class that have total is 89 number of students. In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling, because there are 20 students done three times translation test so, the researcher took 20 students as sample of this research.
Then, the researcher used two instruments in this research. In collecting the data of students‟ ability, the researcher used translation test to find the finding of students‟
ability. Then, in collecting the data of students‟
problem in translating compound sentences, the researcher distributed questionnaire to the students. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the students‟ translation test by using translation scoring rubric.
The form of scoring rubric that is suggested by Nababan (2012) can be showed in the following:
Table 3.4 Criteria of Accuracy
Criteria Score
Accurate and clear meaning, without any omission and addition or changes meaning.
3 (Accurate)
Correct meaning with minimum omission, addition or changes meaning.
2 (Less- accurate) Different meaning,
unclear, ambiguous.
1 (Inaccurate)
Table 3.5 Criteria of Acceptability
Criteria Score
Natural form,
appropriate word, none of grammatical errors, read naturally.
3 (Acceptable)
Minimum inappropriate word, and grammatical errors.
2 (Less- acceptable) Unnatural form, any
inappropriate word.
1 (Inacceptable) Table 3.6 Criteria of Readability
Criteria Score
Words, technical terms, phrases, clauses, sentences or text translation can be understood easily by the reader.
3 (Readable)
In general, the translation can be understood by the reader; however there are certain parts that should be read more than once to understand the translation.
2 (Less- readable)
Translation difficult to understand by the readers.
1 (Unreadable)
Next, the researcher counted students‟
score based on scoring procedures, tabulation and analyzed students‟ answer of questionnaire.
4 FINDING
Based on the data analysis, the researcher found answer for the research question above. In research question 1, “How is students‟
ability in translating compound sentences at basic translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in academic year 2015/2016?”. Based on students‟ result of translation test, the researcher found that students‟
ability generally was 81,81. It means that students‟
ability in translating compound sentences at basic translation class got moderate category.
Then, in research question 2, “What are students‟ problems in translating compound sentences at basic translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in Academic year 2015/2016?”.
Based on students‟ answer of questionnaire, the researcher found that there were 7 common problems that were faced by the students in translating compound sentences. The researcher have been analyzed that most of students often done literal translation when they translated compound sentences. The next problem was most of students often added the meaning of words from source language into target language. Then, the students got difficult to conformed components of sentence from source language into target language. Next, students less understand about independent clause that was existed in compound sentences. Then, most of students less understand in writing a comma when they translated compound sentences.
Next, most of students less understand about function of coordinating conjunction nor and yet.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the data analysis and finding in chapter IV, the researcher concluded that students‟ ability in translating compound sentences of students at basic translation class of English Education Department at STKIP PGRI Sumbar in academic year 2015/2016 was moderate ability.
