ABSTRACT

Participation is one of the important parts in teaching learning process. In teaching learning process, students can give two type participation, that is active and passive participation. This research aims to know what are the types of students’ participation found at tenth grade in English learning process. This research is descriptive reseach that meant to analysis about students’

participation in English process. This research directed to students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, especially tenth grade. Amount of students in this research is 38. In collecting the data, researcher did observation checklist, field note, and video recorder. The first, researcher observe the students through observation in the class. this observation amount 8 items based indicator of students’ participation in English learning process. Based on the data that is gotten during the research, researcher can conclude that type of found participation is passive participation.

Researcher also concludes that all students did two types of participation in English learning process. The second, researcher used field note and video recorder to strengthen data of observation checklist. Based on this research, it can be concluded students’ participation that found in English learning process at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang is passive participation.

Based on the discovering, it is hoped that the teacher can give more attention and control the students to less passive participation and improve active participation in English learning process.

ABSTRAK

Partisipasi adalah salah satu bagian terpenting di dalam proses belajar mengajar. Dalam proses belajar mengajar, siswa dapat memberikan dua macam partisipasi, yaitu partisipasi aktif dan partisipasi pasif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tipe partisipasi apa yang di temukan pada siswa kelas dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptifyang bermaksud untuk menganalisa tentang partisipasi siswa dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini ditujukan kepada siswa SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, khususnya kelas X MIA 1. Jumlah siswa dalam penelitian ini adalah 38. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti melakukan observasi ceklis, catatan lapangan dan merekam video. Yang pertama peneliti mengamati siswa melalui observasi di dalam kelas. Observasi ini berjumlah 8 butir pernyataan berdasarkan indikator tentang partisipasi siswa dalam proses belajar bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan data yang didapatkan selama penelitian, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa yang merupakan tipe partisipasi yang ditemukan adalah pasif partisipasi. Peneliti juga menyimpulkan bahwa semua siswa melakukan kedua partisipasi tersebut dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Yang kedua, peneliti menggunakan catatan lapangan dan rekaman video untuk menguatkan data dari obervasi ceklis. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa partisipasi siswa yang ditemukan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas X MIA 1 SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang adalah partisipasi pasif. Berdasarkan penemuan tersebut, diharapkan

2 kepada guru untuk lebih memberikan perhatian dan mengontrol siswa agar mengurangi partisipasi pasif dan lebih meningkatkan partisipasi aktif di dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.

Kata kunci: Partisipasi Siswa, Proses Pembelajaran.

INTRODUCTION

Teaching is a group activity that involved the teacher, students and content in the classroom. There were some activities that teacher could do in teaching process. It was the most power full of education to bring about desired changes in the students.

The teachers started from giving the material, information, share an idea, and also made judgments about the students’

performance in the class. In teaching learning process, the teacher and the students interacted in the classroom.

Interaction between teacher and students have been inform discussion, conversation, and answered question each other. In interaction process, the students should be active to share participation to each activity in the classroom.

Students’ participation was one of the important parts in teaching and learning English. By participation, the students could transform their responsibility understood prepare to be engage in learning activities.

Therefore, participation of the students becomes one of the elements to result a positive and effective learning experience. It was supported by Patrick (2004:1760) states that there are a number of ways that students can participate overtly, including offering their ideas and thoughts spontaneously, volunteering to answer questions, answering questions when called on, demonstrating at the chalkboard, talking to peers or the teacher about tasks, and completing written work. Students may also participate without these behavioral indicators of involvement by watching, listening, and thinking.

Students’ participation in discussing have some categorizes, students can participate however students can active when they involve the discussion. Besides, when the students see that their participation is being grade regularly and consistently, they adjust their habits accordingly to be prepared for active participation. According to Goodman (1990:80) active participation involves the students practicing the academic task, answering a question, performing a problem, reading a text. In

other word active participation means students follow the rules in discussion, read a text related the material, and students listening carefully about the discussion.

Teaching and learning process is an activity that happens in the classroom between teacher and students which includes how the teacher give the material, facilitate the students, and make the students involved in learning so that the students have participate during the learning process.

According to Eisner (2002:7) teaching is a caring exercise is very much part of the effective learning process. Learning is an emotional exercise. Students will engage in something that appeals to them emotionally.

It means that teaching and learning are needed to make the class efffective in teaching learning process. Thus, the teaching and learning is supporting of good in teaching learning process.

Students follow a discussion however they do not give contribution the discussion can be categorized in passive participation.

According to Goodman (1990:80) passive participation includes general attending behavior such as listening to other students read or watching another students do a problem. Students do not focus in classroom discussion like play a gadget, chatting with their friends, and just silent without take a part in classroom discussion. It can be said passive participation is do not focus about material have been discussed, it cause the passive students can not get information in learning process.

From the expert explanation above the researcher can conclude that active participation when the students involves in discussion, making problem solving, asking question, listening and joining in learning process, and determine in classroom decision behavioral responses during the class, including node their head, raise their hands, body movements, and eye contact.

Passive participation is a kind of things that often appear when the discussion happens.

They do not focus on the material and do not ongoing in discussion, students feel shy to speak in the classroom.

3 RESEARCH METHOD

The design of this research was a descriptive research that tried to express about an analysis of students’ participation in English learning process at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat. According to Gay and Airasian (2000:11) descriptive research was research that reports phenomena as it appears in the process of the research and collected the data in order to answer the research questions.

To get the data in the research, the researcher needed the participants. In this research the researcher chosen tenth grade students, class X MIA1 of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat. According to Gay and Airasian (2000:121) selecting the participants was to represent a population about which we seek some information. The researcher was able to get some information in one place from the participants. In this research, the researcher chosen tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat

In this research, researcher will use two instruments to the find the data during research process in the field. The first instruments that were used video recording were tool to record of storing images or event. The second instrument, the researcher will use observation. Observation used for helping the researcher to found the data along the research process. On the other hand, the researcher also will write all important things that useful for this research.

After collecting data, the researcher will analyzed the data based on the instrumentation given. According to Gay and Airasian (2000:239) there were four steps of analyzing the data; (1) Reading /memoing, in this stage, researcher was to kept attention in each part because this stage is important to the result of the research it self. If the researchers do a mistake in this stage it will be more complicated. The next stage is become wrong judgments. (2) Describing, in this part, the researcher examines the data in depth to provide detail description of setting, participants and activities. The setting of the research is SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat and the participant of this research is tenth grade at SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat. The last is activities in teaching English to seen students’

participation. In this part also described about teachers’ involvement in supported this research after got the result. (3) Classifying, it is categorizing and coding pieces of data and physically grouping them into themes. In this step, the researcher will identify the data based on the indicator them based on the main themes of types of students’ participation; they were active participation and passive participation. (4) Interpreting, This phase is interpreting and synthesizing the organized data into general understanding. In this phase, the researcher will interpreted the types of students’

participation in English learning process at tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat.

FINDING AND DISCUSSION FINDING

In the observation checklist, field note and video the researcher classifies the students based on the types of students’

participation in learning activities. The researcher finds that there are two types of participation at the tenth grade students in English learning process at SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang. Researchers find that all the indicators of active participations encountered by the students in English learning process. They admitted in learning process, such as answering questions of the teacher, respond teacher explanation, giving ideas, showing their satisfaction in learning, nodding their head, raising hand when they had question, body movement and showing eye contact when they interaction with the teacher and their friends in the classroom.

Thus, in this part the researcher classify and explain in each indicator as follow:

1. Active Students’ Participation

In indicators of active students participation divide become 4 that are:

nodding head, raise hand, body movements, and show eye contact. And researcher will explained each indicator

a. Noding head

In this indicator just 15 students that involve. They nodding head in some activity, such as: some of students nodding head when respond explained of other friends, then when respond teachers’

explanation, and when the student give explanation about picture that instructed the teacher about the young man while play football.

4 b. Raise hand

In this indicator just were 9 students that involve. Some of the students raise hand when the answered teachers’ question about the young man while play football and two students raise their hand when want answer teacher question about what your ambition after graduated from our Senior High School.

c. Body movements

In this indicator just 4 students that involve, this students show body movements when they give explanation about picture that instructed the teacher about young man while play football. Body movements that used students is moves their hand and nodding head

d. Eye contact

This indicator all of students involve, they see to the teacher when the teacher explained material and some of students when give respon about the teachers’

question, they see to the teacher, then when one student give answer, other friends see toward student that give the answer. It show that students and teacher, student and student to respect one with the others.

2. Passive students’ participation a. Writing notes

In this indicator 10 students that involve.

Some of students write when the teacher explained material and when the learning process. When the students make notes they do not focus to listen teacher explanation.

b. Sit quetly

In this indicator nothing student that involve, because the students nothing that just sit quietly in class. Although their silent but them see also to teacher when the teacher explained material.

c. Listening to the teacher

In this indicator 15 students that involve. They just listen teachers’

explanation without give respond “YES” or

“NO” and nodding head.

d. Doing other things during the larning process

In this indicator many students that involve, that is 32 students. They talk with friend when the teacher explained material and in learning process.

From the explanation before, it can be conclude that, the researcher find that at class X MIA1 just are 18 students who are active participation. Many of the students

encountered passive participation in learning activities. It means that, they do not intereste d to learned English and they shy to give the ir ideas because afraid to false. Almost all st udents do indicators of eye contact. Then, there are 20 students did the indicators of passive participation and indicators that often did the students is chatting with friend when the learning process. It means that all the students involve in active participation and passive participation in English learning process.

DISCUSSION

It can be concluded that, the tentht grade students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang is conduct two types of participation that was active and passive participation. According to Yusof et al (2011:64) participation of the students in the classroom can be categorized in active and passive. Active participation is students who taking a part and showed satisfaction in learning process associated with behavioral responses during the class, including node their head, raise their hands, body movements and eye contact. Another act of active participation includes asking and answering questions, give ideas about the related topic material. Passive participation refers to the acts of writing notes, sit quietly, listening to teacher or doing other things.

Based on the expert explanation, in this research, the researcher had found the indicator of active and passive participation in English learning process at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION A. Conclusion

Participation is the part of learning activities that should be follow by the students. It can be followed through some activities that doing by the students in learning activities such as asking and answering question, giving opinions in discussion, raising hand, and taking a part in learning activities. Besides, the students can follow learning activities through other activities such as chatting, playing and walking around the class.

In collecting the data about students’

participation in English learning process the researcher did the research at SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat in order to answer the research question. The

5 participants in this research were tenth grade

students (X MIA1) at SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat. There were 38 students.

In collecting the data it was done through observation checklist, field note, and video recording. It was chosen because the researcher wanted to get the data more detail and diverse information. This research was done in order to get the information about students’ participation. In observation checklist, the researcher checklist the item related to the activity that happens in the classroom naturally. During observation, researcher recorded it by using camera.

After getting the

information from participants, researcher an alyzed the data by reading/memoing, describing, interpreting and classifying.

Based on research finding, there were two types of students’ participation that is found in English learning process at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat. First, the researcher found that all the students admitted in active participation during the learning process, but every student did not encounter all indicators of active participation. Second, all the students also followed the learning process through passive participation, such as writing notes when the teacher explain the material, just listened to the teacher without give responds, and doing the others activities in the classroom such as chatting, playing and walking around the class.

B. Suggestion

After doing the investigation phase in the field and analyzed the data, the researcher stated insightful suggestion in this point. Firstly, the teacher needed to know about students’ participation in the classroom and could able to categorized students’ participation in the classroom so that the teacher can inspired the students to do active participation and less passive participation in the classroom. Secondly, related to research finding, the researcher suggested that students to do active participation in the classroom and did not do passive participation.

Overall, this research informs to the readers about students’ participation in English learning process. The researcher also asked to the reader to additional

information related to students’ participation in English learning process and it can be very useful for the readers.
