Judul Skripsi: Students' perception of the effectiveness of public speaking to support their speaking practice (A descriptive study at the Fifth Semester Student English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University. Students' perception of the effectiveness of speaking in public to support their speaking practice (A descriptive survey of the fifth semester students of the English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University.) This research was designed to find out how the students' perception of the Public Speaking class support their speaking practice to the fifth semester students of the English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University in the 2017/2018 academic year of BG.VD.

The researcher applied Descriptive Qualitative Method as design method because it was comparable to collect the data from the students. Based on findings, it finds that students gave the positive perception regarding implementation of Public Speaking Class to measure the effectiveness of Public Speaking Class to support their speaking practice. They enjoyed the learning process because they can practice speaking in front of the audience, express their idea, feeling, and also most students believe that public speaking class has many benefits for students to improve their speaking skill, especially their fluency.

First of all, praise be to Allah SWT who has given guidance, blessing and mercy to the researcher in the completion of this thesis. The researcher would like to give her gratitude, respect and appreciation to the following people who have supported her and made this thesis possible. In this study, the researcher will focus on public speaking topics among students of the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The Department of English Education at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar has applied a Public Speaking Subject which aims to encourage the students to excel in public speaking. Considering that public speaking skills are very important in this diverse and highly competitive environment so it will be a good modality for the students.

Based on the above explanation, the researcher is interested to conduct the study titled: “Student Perception of the Effectiveness of Public Speaking to Support Their Speaking Practice among the Fifth Semester Students of the English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.” Based on the above statement, the study narrows down the discussion by asking the research question, “How is the students' perception of Public Speaking Class in supporting their speaking practice among the fifth semester students of the English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research provides teachers with information in organizing a good method of teaching public speaking to support students' speaking practice.

This research is able to help students understand the effectiveness in learning public speaking class to support their speaking practice. This research will be limited in topic that has been taught, the research will take place in Public Speaking class with the fifth semester students.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework will show that public speaking classes are aimed at training the student's self-confidence and support skills for speaking in public situations, with the help of student perception, this will answer and give good information for lecturers that public speaking can support in the practice of public speaking students.

The findings presented the result of the analysis of the data collected through the questionnaire regarding the Students' Perception towards the effectiveness of the public speaking class to support their speaking practice in the fifth semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The students' perception can be clearly seen in the following explanation: Students' perception towards the effectiveness of the public speaking class to support their speaking practice. Frequency of students' perception towards the effectiveness of public speaking class to support their speaking practice in fifth semester students in Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.

Thus, we can conclude that most of the fifth semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar fully agree that Public Speaking Class gives the students more confidence to speak in front of the class. Thus, we can conclude that most of the fifth semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar strongly agree that Public Speaking Class can enhance students' potential and talents. Thus, we can conclude that most of the fifth semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar fully agreed that Public Speaking Class can make students a better speaker.

University of Makassar strongly agreed that students can express the idea, meaning and feeling after a public speaking class. In this part, the researcher explains about students' perception of the effectiveness of public speaking to support their speaking practice on fifth semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar and student questionnaire result scores. Students' perception of the effectiveness of public speaking class to support their speaking practice of fifth semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.

All the students strongly agreed and had a positive response. The calculation also shows that the average score for the students' perception of the effectiveness of the Public Speaking Class to support their speaking practice was 56. Most of the students believed that the public speaking class had a good motivation for the students to improve their speaking skills. The researcher claims that Public Speaking Class very useful for students for a good future career.

They claimed that they got many benefits from public speaking to improve their speaking skills when practicing speaking. For the Public Speaking Class teacher to fifth semester students of the Department of English at Makassar Muhammadiyah University, this is suggested. 1 By taking the public speaking lessons, I feel more confident to speak in front of the class.

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Discussion

As indicated by the findings, the results of the questionnaires show that respondents had a positive view of the effectiveness of Public Speaking Class in supporting their speaking practice. For question number 1, all students answered: Public Speaking Class gives the students more confidence to speak in front of the class. Thus, it can be concluded that all the students strongly agree that Public Speaking Class can help the students to be more confident when practicing speaking. In questions 3 and 4 it was stated that the Public Speaking Class can make the students a better speaker and is a good place to do speaking exercises. Therefore, it was concluded that all students agree that the Public Speaking Class makes the students a better speaker and the place to do speaking exercises.

In question number 5 with the students together in the public speaking class, the students can express the idea, thought and feeling, so it can be concluded that all the students fully agree because the students got a new experience. In question number 8 and 9, they stated that from the combined public speaking class, students can speak in front of the audience with a predetermined time. So, it can be concluded that all students agree because it can help students fluently in practicing speaking.

In question number 10, all students agree to participate in Public Speaking Class, students can solve the problem of speaking as nervous. For question number 11, the students said undecided: Public Speaking help them listen more carefully and critically evaluate other speeches. In addition, the result of the students' perception is similar to the previous finding, Watkins (2014), states that developing public speaking skills requires hard work and motivation.

This chapter consists of two parts, the first part refers to the conclusions of the research findings and the second part to the suggestions. Based on the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the study gave a positive opinion on the effectiveness of the public speaking course on the fifth semester students of BG.VD of the Department of English at Makassar Muhammadiyah University. The positive judgment of the respondents comes not only from the agreement with the students' statements and aspects in the research questionnaire, but also from the advantages they got during the implementation of the public speaking class to improve their speaking skills.

The lecturer needed the students to get some instructions, correction, motivation, etc. Guidelines for public speaking; Question Two aims to find out the effect of PSI in reducing students' communication anxiety.
