Students’ Perceptions of…, Nelly Agustin, FKIP UMP, 20221 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION A. Background of Research

Indonesian students must learn English as a foreign language at school.

They need teachers to help them to study that language. According to Muhlison (2014), the teacher is the person who is responsible for the physical and spiritual development of students, especially in schools, to achieve student maturity so that they become complete human beings and know their duties as humans. Teachers are professionals who must achieve educational qualifications, have competence in their fields of knowledge, can communicate, have a creative and productive spirit, have a commitment to their profession, and have the will to continue to develop their abilities.

(Wardoyo, 2015).

The teachers are facilitator responsible for transferring knowledge to the students. Students' success in mastering the subject depends on how the teacher teaches in the classroom. Teachers strongly influence students in determining what to know, how or what to learn, and also cause interactions between students. (Lupascu, Pânisoară, & Pânisoară, 2014). Teachers' skills

in teaching are important. It causes the subject matter to be conveyed to students well. The teaching process is a complex activity carried out by teachers. According to Rajagopalan (2019), teaching is a scientific process, and its main components are materials, communication, and feedback.

Teaching strategies can also have a positive effect on student learning.

teaching aids, evaluating, supervising school rules, supervising students' mental health, and so on (Suharti, et al, 2020). Every teacher's way of teaching is different. They have their characteristics in teaching.

Effective teachers possess several characteristics. Walker (2008) identifies twelve characteristics of effective teachers: preparation, fairness, positive attitude, high expectations, creativity, personal touch, belongingness, acceptance of mistakes, respect for students, sense of humor, forgiving attitude, and compassion. However, teachers often unable to demonstrate all these characteristics when teaching. In this case, the conditions of the classroom and the students’ characters affect these teacher’s characteristics.

Teachers should know and understands students’ characters and respond to

them accordingly. It will affect student learning motivation and the success of the teaching and learning process.

One of the influences on the success of the teaching and learning process is effective teachers. They are teachers who have competence in their field. According to Regulation no. 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers Article 10 paragraph (1), there are four competencies that every teacher must possess, including pedagogical competence, professional competence obtained through professional education, social competence, and personality competence.
