1. Summary of the Novel “Jalan Tak Ada Ujung”

The novel tells of a teacher named Isa who teaches at a school in Tanah Abang.

He lived at the time of the revolution when the youth were incessantly fighting against the Dutch troops who wanted to take control of Indonesia again.

In this novel, Guru Isa is described as someone who loves peace and does not like violence. By compulsion because of fear he was accused of being an enemy spy. He joined a secret organization in his village, and he was chosen to be a courier or delivery man for weapons and letters within the city of Jakarta.

He has a wife named Fatimah. During his marriage he was not blessed with a child, because Master Isa experienced impotence. Finally, at the request of his wife, they adopted a child named Salim. Their life is not as happy as it used to be after marriage. Isa never saw Fatima's eyes again like before they got married. His economic situation was also bad because Guru Isa's income was very erratic. So that Fatimah had to borrow everywhere, until one day her situation was really desperate, until finally Teacher Isa stole the notebooks in school.

Because of the similarity of his hobby of playing the violin. Isa's teacher becomes close to Hazil, a young man he knows through an uprising in his village. Hazil is the son of Mr. Kamaruddin, retired Head of Landraad.

Together with Hazil, and a driver named Abdullah, they went to smuggle weapons to Karawang using Mr. Hamidi's car. At Asam Reges, they met Rakhmat, Ontong and his friends. From Ontong he was told that some time ago, they had killed 2 Chinese women who were considered to be enemy spies. Master Isa became afraid and horrified.

One day Master Isa suffered from malaria. It was then that Hazil came to visit.

When he finished he helped Fatimah light the stove fire. And since then a dark relationship has occurred between Hazil and Fatimah.

Once when Guru Isa was sleeping, he found a pipe belonging to Hazil under the bed. That's where he found out that his wife was having an affair, but he preferred to remain silent.

With great sacrifice, Guru Isa agrees to Hazil and Rakhmat's plan to throw hand grenades into a Rex cinema. However, a week later he read a newspaper saying that one of the hand grenade throwers had been caught. Obviously the news scared Master Isa to death. He didn't know who had been caught. Rakhmat or Hazil?

And a few days later Guru Isa was arrested by the police. There he was interrogated. While in detention he learns that it was Hazillah who was caught. Hazil was very sorry and almost died in his fear. And Isa's teacher remained strong and made it through those fearful times.

2. Comments on KH. Ahmad Mustofa Bisri’s Poems - Kau Ini Bagaimana Atau Aku Harus Bagaimana

The main idea or thought developed through the poem above can be found in every stanza and the whole poem. In the poem "Kau Ini Bagaimana Atau Aku Harus Bagaimana", the subject matter of Kiai Haji Mustofa Bisri is the people's protest against the leader. The leader referred to here is the people's representative or DPR (People's Representative Council) in our country's constitution. This subject is emphasized in one of the stanzas, as shown below.

Aku harus bagaimana?

Aku kau suruh memilihmu sebagai wakilku Sudah ku pilih kau bertindak sendiri semaumu Kau bilang kau selalu memikirkanku

Aku sapa saja kau merasa terganggu

In the poem, Gus Mus also questions the problems that occur such as social, cultural, legal and religious problems in society. In his view, freedom in the sense of independence is still being colonized in various fields such as the fields of power, law, economy, culture and religion. Many people feel they have lost their rights as citizens.

For example, freedom of speech is restricted by laws and regulations for the benefit of certain groups, thus losing confidence in their leaders. Many people fulfill their social and legal obligations under conditions of pressure and obligation to conform to the system.
