THE EFFECT OF CROSSWORD PUZZLE MEDIA ON VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE EIGHTH YEAR STUDENTS OF MTs AN-NUR

PALANGKA RAYA ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to measure the effect of crossword puzzle in vocabulary mastery of the eighth year students of MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya. The writer used quantitative approach. The design of the study was quasi-experimental design.

The population of the study was the whole students of the eighth year students at MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya with the total number of the students were 81 students. The sample of study namely VIII-A as experimental group (taught by using crossword puzzle) with the total number of 30 students and VIII- B as control group (taught without using crossword puzzle) with the total number of 33 students. The sample of study was determined using cluster sampling technique.

The result of t test using manual calculation showed that the calculated value (tobserved) was greater than ttable at 5% and 1% significance level or 2.000<3.069> 2.660. The result of t-test using SPSS 16.0 calculation indicated that the calculated value (tobserved) was also greater than ttable at 5% and 1%

significance level or 2.000 <3.069> 2.660. This indicated that the alternative hypotheses stating that the crossword puzzle increases the students’ English scores for the eighth year students at MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya was accepted and the null hypotheses stating that the crossword puzzle does not increased the students’ English scores for the eighth year students at MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya was rejected. Based on the results of the study, it was shown that the crossword puzzle gives effect in vocabulary mastery at the eighth year students of MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya. Because, crossword puzzle media can be interest the student in learning activities, crossword puzzle increase students motivation in learning activities, and crossword puzzle can keep the students attention during the teaching activity.

PENGARUH DARI MEDIA TEKA TEKI SILANG PADA PENGUASAAN KOSA KATA BAHASA INGGRIS UNTUK SISWA KELAS DELAPAN DI

MTs AN-NUR PALANGKA RAYA ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur keefektifan penggunaan media teka teki silang pada penguasaan kosa kata siswa kelas delapan di MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif, jenis penelitian ini menggunakan kuasi-eksperimen desain.

Populasi penelitian terdiri dari semua murid kelas delapan MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya. Dengan total keseluruhan 81 siswa. Sample dalam penelitian ini, kelompok eksperimen VIII-A (mengajar menggunakan teka teki silang) dengan jumlah 30 siswa. Dan VIII-B kelompok kontrol (mengajar tanpa menggunakan teka teki silang) dengan jumlah 33 siswa. Sample di tentukan dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling.

Hasil t-test menggunakan perhitungan manual menunjukkan bahwa nilai yang dihitung (ttest) lebih besar dari ttabel sebesar pada tingkat signifikansi 5% dan 1% atau 2.000 <3.069> 2.660. Hasil t-test menggunakan SPSS 16.0 perhitungan mengindikasikan bahwa nilai yang dihitung (thitung) juga lebih besar dari ttabel pada 5% dan 1% atau tingkat signifikansi 2.000 <3.069> 2.660. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif yang menyatakan bahwa teka teki silang sebagai media meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata bahasa inggris pada kelas delapan di MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya diterima dan hipotesis nol yang menyatakan bahwa teka teki silang tidak meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata bahasa inggris pada kelas delapan di MTs An-Nur Palangka Raya ditolak. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, menunjukkan bahwa teka teki silang sebagai media memberikan kontribusi yang bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan prestasi kosa kata dalam bahasa inggris. Karena, teka teki silang bisa membuat siswa tertarik secara khusus pada kegiatan belajar.

Teka teki silang meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa. Dan teka teki silang bisa menjaga perhatian siswa selama aktivitas belajar.

Kata kunci: Pengaruh, media, teka teki silang, penguasaan kosa kata.
