From then on with the exception of one year, George served as associate secretary of the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky. County presidents and interested persons keep the Society informed of the state of markers in their area, and the Society paints or repairs marker damage. Through historical markers, the wealth of Kentucky's history is made accessible to the public in snippets that capture the interest of communities across the state.

Baptist Life

Soon after World War I, many in Western Kentucky began to discuss a "school of preachers," and men such as 0. Hudson proposed the development of such a school at the annual meeting of the Western Kentucky Association on October 6, 1948, and Dr. Carlin taught first grade on the night of January 10, 1949 in the basement of the old First Baptist Church building in Clinton.

In 1796 Mero District Association was formed by churches in Kentucky and Tennessee, which were first developed in these areas. In 1803, 190 years ago, the Cumberland Baptist Association replaced and enlarged the Mero District, first to include churches in "western" Kentucky. In 1807, Red River Baptist Association was formed by churches in the northern part of Cumberland Association, which came nearer to us.

In 1813, the Little River Baptist Association was founded in western Kentucky, still bordered on the west by the Tennessee River. Years ago, the Jackson-Shelby Purchase was finalized and white settlers could legally enter the land west of Tennessee. In 1828, 165 years ago, the Obion Baptist Association was founded in western Tennessee, probably including churches in Kentucky. Poplar Grove Baptist Church, near Hick Man, the oldest in the current West Kentucky Association, was founded that same year. In 1853, 140 years ago, the Beulah Baptist Association was founded in West Tennessee, including the Kentucky churches of Hickman (founded 1846), Poplar Grove, Madrid Bend, and possibly others.

In 1893, 100 years ago, Graves County and West Kentucky Baptist Associations were formed, West Union became Ballard and McCracken Counties, and Mount Olivet dissolved. Associations in bold type refer to associations of West Kentucky and/or Graves County Baptist Associations.
