They were interested in defining why people communicate differently in different social contexts, and they were interested in exploring the social functions of language and the ways in which language is used to provide social meaning. As well as Wardaugh, quoted in Hudson, explained that sociolinguistics is “the study of language in relation to society” while the sociology of language is “the study of society in relation to language”. Moreover, Meyerhoff stated that sociolinguistics is a very comprehensive field, and that it can be used in many different ways.
It is about how individual language is used, how people use language differently in different countries, cities or regions and how a nation determines which languages will be recognized in courts or education. W ardhaugh explained that the variety of language as a set of human speech system (words, sounds and grammatical features) that were related to external factors such as geographical area or social group. In the same way, Hudson also defined a variety of language as "a group of linguistic items with similar distribution".
According to Holmes, language varieties can be categorized according to user and usage. Ultimately, the researcher will focus on one of the language variations in this research, that is, language style.

Formal style is used by people who are still not close enough or perhaps do not know each other (speaker and hearer). T his style is usually single topic oriented and this is related to formal writing being technical. Modality is more commonly conveyed through the use of modal verbs such as must, could, could, should, etc.
The conclusion is that formal or deliberative style is explained as a type of language style used in situations in which speakers are very careful in their choice of words, pronunciation and sentence structure. Based on Joos's theory, Chaer explained that the deliberative style is often used in business management or discussions. Casual style is also simply explained as the style used to talk in our relaxed or normal situation, which corresponds to talking with friends, and background information is arbitrarily inserted into casual conversation.
This style is used for casual situations such as with a close friend, acquaintance, insider in social settings. In summary, intimate style is the most casual style and is usually used between couples or lovers, family members and intimate friends.
