This research sought to determine whether the use of the Duolingo application is effective in improving the translation of students in the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar in the academic year 2019/2020. The sample of this research was XI MIPA class of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar which consisted of 20 students. It can be concluded that duolingo application was effective in improving students' translation in the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar.

Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI MIPA SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar yang berjumlah 20 siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi duolingo efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan terjemahan siswa kelas sebelas di SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. Banyak pihak yang telah memberikan dorongan dan bantuan selama merealisasikan tesis berjudul "Penggunaan Aplikasi Duolingo untuk Meningkatkan Penerjemahan Siswa di Kelas Sebelas SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar".

Based on the above information, the objective of this research is to overcome some of the problems faced by learners in translating language into other languages ​​in to eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar using the Duolingo app.

Problem Statement

In addition, Munday (2016) stated that Duolingo is an easy-to-use app that is useful and has potential, although its main lessons are not based on communicative competence and students enjoy it using various elements such as accessibility to mobile devices, gamification aspect and variety of tasks. In addition, Jaskova (2014:15) defines Duolingo as the future of language learning and global communication. Students work with the program and have the opportunity to explore all skills in English. Although the content of the software is not adapted to the cultural background of the students, it engages the students in a very interesting way that can motivate them.

Based on the above statement, the researcher wants to conduct a research titled “Using Duolingo App for Student Improvement”.

The app then asks if the student already knows anything about the language, and if so, it gives the student a placement test. Without further questions or even registering for the course, the student can go straight into their first lesson by pressing Start. Teaching translation is important for students because with translation we can understand the second language.

H0: duolingo app has no significant influence on improving students' translation in eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. In this study, the researcher used pre-experimental research, which was employed a group of pre-test - post-test.

The treatment was the learning process where duolingo application was used in the learning process. After doing the treatment with duolingo, posttest would be given to measure the students' translation after the treatment.

Before the students received the treatment, a pre-test was administered and a post-test was administered after the treatment. This test was designed to know the translation performance of the students after they received the treatment.

Table 4.4 showed about the frequency and percentage of pre-test and post-test scores of students' translation using the Duolingo application. This meant that the students' score translation of the post-test was better than the pre-test. The table showed that the result was 7.881>2.093, which meant that there was an improvement in students' translation before and after treatment with duolingo application in the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar.

Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the null hypotheses (H0) were rejected, while the alternative hypotheses were accepted before and after using duolingo application in the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. The results of this research indicated the students' improvement of translation in eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar in the academic year 2019/2020. They are actively involved in the learning process, asking questions in teaching and learning process with Duolingo Application.

In that research, there were two classes, it was VIB consisted of 25 students who received treatment with Duolingo application and VIA consisted of 26 students who received treatment using conventional teaching. In conclusion, Duolingo application was effective in improving English vocabulary at the sixth grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Darul Ilmi. The relationship of this research with the previous study that this research used Duolingo Application in learning media and the researcher refers to previous study to be used as a reference and the result of the study both shows that the use of Duolingo Application in the teaching-learning process is effective and can improve students' translation (word-to-word).

Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher concluded that the duolingo application was effective in improving students' translation. The use of Duolingo application is effective to improve students' translation in the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. For school, the Duolingo app can be used in teaching the learning process, especially in teaching translation.

So students are interested in how to translate sentences into other languages ​​using the Duolingo app. Teachers should try using the Duolingo app, as the Duolingo app will improve the student's English translation skills and probably could have a positive effect on other skills such as speaking, listening and reading. An analysis of pronunciation exercises in the Duolingo application and its contribution as a medium for learning English.
