Using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) to Improve Students’ Vocabulary (A Pre Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade of SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminas). Background

Given the previous description, the researcher used the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique to overcome the problems. By using the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique in their research, they found that students' vocabulary was improved. Related to the previous study, the researcher demonstrated the novelty of this study by using the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique to improve students' vocabulary, focusing more on the part of the vocabulary that is special in noun and verb.

The result of the researcher showed that the use of personal vocabulary notes significantly improved the students' vocabulary. Research Design

The method of this study used a pre-experimental (one group pre-test post-test) research design. The variables in this study were the use of the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique as the independent variable and student vocabulary as the dependent variable. The dependent variable is the variable that the researcher has observed and measured to determine the effect of the independent variable.

Research Instrument

Data Collection

In the fifth session, the researcher asked the students to remember the vocabulary they had written earlier. A post-test score calculated to determine whether or not the student's vocabulary improved using the Personal Vocabulary (PVN) technique.

Technique of Data Analysis

The average of the difference points : The sum of the total difference points D : The square of the result of the sum of N : The total number of students.

Findings

The graph showed the significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean score. It means that the progress took place after the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) were applied in vocabulary learning. In conclusion, it was relatively fair to say that Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) when teaching vocabulary to students of VIIB class SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa can improve students' vocabulary, especially regarding nouns and verbs.

The percentages of the students' pretest score levels were presented in the following table. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the percentage rate in the posttest was higher than the percentage rate before the test. To find out whether the pronunciation ability in the difference between pretest and posttest is at 0.05 level of significance with degrees of freedom (df) = N-1 (26-1) where N = number of subjects (26 students).

Vocabulary achievement in the null hypothesis (H0) stated that teaching vocabulary with Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) was not effective in improving students' vocabulary and the alternative hypothesis was rejected. H1) stated that teaching vocabulary with personal vocabulary notes was effective to improve students' vocabulary was accepted. The difference showed that after the treatment, the students had better achievement in vocabulary than before. It could be seen that there was a significance of students' vocabulary achievement after applying Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) in teaching.

It can also be concluded that Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) was effective in teaching vocabulary.

Discussion

Based on the result, students' mean score improved in noun and verb because the use of personal vocabulary (PVN) was effective in teaching vocabulary. By using the Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) method, students can learn well, more fun, and students can develop their own ideas. According to the theoretical framework, teaching vocabulary using the personal vocabulary note (PVN) technique could have a positive effect on students in order to increase the number of students.

Third, after the treatment, students gained knowledge on how to improve their vocabulary using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN). Yulianti, et al., (2015) conducted a research "Effectiveness of Using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) to Learn English Vocabulary". The result of this research that receives a positive response because the teacher used personal dictionary notes.

Aprilianty (2014) with her thesis "The effectiveness of Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique on students' vocabulary comprehension. The researcher conducted his research using Classroom Action Research (CAR) and used Personal Vocabulary Notes. Looking at some previous research above, the researcher concluded that students' vocabulary was improved by using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN).

The result of this research also showed that using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique could improve students' vocabulary.

Conclusion

The teacher should know the students' difficulties with vocabulary, especially regarding nouns and verbs. The teacher should give the students more exercises in vocabulary so that they do not have problems to practice more. The researcher should be more creative in creating media to teach and improve students' vocabulary.

The researcher must be able to develop the use of personal vocabularies (PVN) in teaching English. As this research is not yet complete, it is suggested that future researchers should conduct further research in the same area, especially on the use of Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique in teaching vocabulary.
