For this reason, the researcher was supposed to conduct a research entitled "The use of small group work to improve speaking performance among ten science 4th graders of State Senior High School 5 Metro".

Problem Identification

In this study, the researcher intends to do classroom action research, it is expected to solve problems in the classroom, and the researcher assumes that classroom action research would increase speaking skills and make the students enjoy it would like to learn English in particular. Therefore, the teacher should be able to apply the effective method and technique to improve students' speaking skills.

Problem Limitation

Problem formulation

Objective and Benefit of the study 1. Objective of the study

Some of the functions of working in small groups can be classified into three areas: interaction between the lecturer and the small group. The process of student observation and directed learning allows the tutor to encourage student feedback.

Action Hypothesis

  • The Operational Definition of Variable

This variable will be measured by observation to the teacher directly using small group work. The measurement uses observation sheets to measure the teacher's work in small groups.

Setting Of The Research

Object of the Research

The Procedure of the Research

The researcher analyzed and discussed the observation result during the learning process, such as the weakness and the strength of the action in these steps. The researcher used data from the evaluation to make improvements for the second cycle. In this step, the researcher compared the score distribution of the pre-test and the post-test, the researcher watched and reflected on the attitude of the students: was it positive or negative, enough in the second cycle or needed for the next cycle.

Data collection method

The post-test was conducted to know the progress of students' speaking performance using small group work after the treatments. The type of post-test was individual test in group and the form was oral test, which consists of ten themes, and each theme consists of three to five students. The researcher would use the documentation method to get detailed information about the history of the school, the sum of the teacher, employers, students and organizational structure among the tenth grade students the State Senior High School 5 Metro, Lampung in the academic year.

Documentation on the status of teachers and official employees of State Senior High School 5 Metro Lampung. It was used to know the achievement of students in speaking performance by using small group as a technique, aids and documents about the achievement of students in speaking. The subject of this observation is students in X class IPA4 and the total number of students is thirty-six students.

In this step, the researcher observes the learning process using the student's observation list. The students paid attention to the teacher's explanation b) The students asked/answered the teacher's question c) The students were actively practicing peak performance.

Research of instrument

In this research, the researcher used the student observation list to directly know the activities of the students in the classroom. In order to find the average of the students' scores and the percentage of the students' scores, the score is matched to the minimum standard. The data describe one group and only that one group.33 Data analysis will be carried out with quantitative data and qualitative data.

The quantitative data will be performed step by step by taking the average score of the pre-test and post-test in cycle 1 and cycle 2. From the results of the research it can be said that it is successful in learning process as the result of cycle 2 more successful than cycle 1. Aspects that were inspected of the research were the students' activity and the students' ability to activity in the class to learn.

The indicator of success takes from the process and the result of the learning activities. It includes the documentation Statens Seniorgymnasium, the result of the research and the interpretation of the research.

The post test was done to know how the students' speaking performance after giving treatment. In this session, the researcher got the results of the students' posttest I in cycle I. This table was to describe the comparison of the students' activities in cycle I and cycle II.

Based on the result of the students activities in cycle I and cycle II were increased. From the above table, it could be seen that the students' average score in posttest III was 77.22. Based on the result above, the researcher indicated that the learning process in cycle III was successful because the students' activity got a percentage of 72%.

This table should describe the comparison of students' activities in II. and III. Based on the results of student activities in II. and III. From the results of the students' scores from the post-test II, it could be concluded that there was an increase in scores.

From the results of the students' score of post-test III, it could be concluded that there was an increase in score.

DISCUSSION

Based on the above data, we can conclude that the students felt comfortable and active in the learning process, as most of the students made good progress in the learning activities when the teachers trained the speaking ability of the students in cycle I, cycle II and cycle III by working in small groups. Small group work consisted of joint work, a phrase or a sentence to train the working group of students, so that the speaking performance of students increased after continuous training in small groups. In addition, the researcher used small group work that included the introduction of a different topic and a different topic to increase students' speaking performance.

The researcher distributed a piece of paper to the students, which contained several small groups. After completing cycle I, cycle II and cycle III, students' speaking performance increased because the researcher used small group work as a technique. In this chapter, the researcher wants to suggest the teacher in teaching speaking and the technique he can use in teaching speaking.

Conclusion

In addition, the researcher used a small group assignment introducing the theme of 'others' to improve the students' speaking skills. After Cycle III, the speaking performance of the students increased because the researcher used small group work as a technique.

Suggestion
