The committee encourages researchers to seek new and improved methods of care for laboratory animals as one of its responsibilities to Vanderbilt University. The Awards Committee is responsible for the nomination to the Executive Faculty of each candidate to be considered for intramural, national, and international awards available to members of the Faculty of the Medical School. The Clinical Investigation Committee is composed of faculty members from both clinical and preclinical departments as well as representatives from the undergraduate and graduate schools at Vanderbilt.
The committee's task is to review all research proposals involving human subjects with regard to the following: (a) the rights and welfare of the human subjects; (b) the appropriateness of the methods used to obtain informed consent; (c) the risks and potential medical benefits of the examination.

The Academic Programs and Student Affairs Committee, composed of students, Executive Faculty, faculty, and administration, serves as a forum for the exchange of views and an ongoing review of educational programs and policies in the broad spectrum of student affairs and medical education. and recommends the actions and policies of the Executive Faculty and the Dean that have the approval of the commission in these areas of responsibility. The committee is charged with the overall coordination of leisure fellowship experiences for medical students throughout Vanderbilt Medical School and elsewhere and recommends institutional policy in this regard to the Executive Faculty. The committee approves and recommends to the Dean those students who are most qualified for institutional merit scholarship awards.

To protect themselves and others from communicable diseases, all new medical students undergo chest x-rays and tuberculin skin tests during orientation. All new students must have a smallpox vaccination within three years, a tetanus toxoid vaccination within three years, and a current polio vaccination.
The University operates the Student Health Service and Infirmary for students with mild illnesses. For major illnesses, students are admitted
A student who does not wish to subscribe to the University's insurance plan must provide proof of sufficient coverage under another policy within one month of enrollment. The University reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to require the withdrawal of any student for physical or mental reasons. Students who withdraw from the University for any reason are not entitled to a refund of room rent or other regular charges or assessments, and the University is not liable for their return or refund.
The University reserves the right to require any resident to vacate the apartment at any time and for any reason, upon reasonable notice.
EXPENSES AND FINANCIAL AID
Financial aid for needy medical students is not limited to the funds available through the Medical School. A prominent and important source of financial assistance for needy medical students, in addition to that available through the Medical School, is the Federal Government Education Agency's Guaranteed Loan Program. Another prominent or potential source of financial aid, in addition to that available directly through the Medical School, is the American Medical Association's guaranteed loan program.

HONORS AND AWARDS
The purpose of the award is to stimulate interest in nutritional issues and research in the young medical profession. This award is given annually to a medical student in the graduating class who has distinguished himself by outstanding achievement throughout his medical education in various aspects of scholastic, personal and professional achievement and performance as a member of the \ anderbilt community. The Upjohn Award is presented through the interest and generosity of Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company.

ADMISSION
Graduates of a college or university of recognized standing
- Students of U.S. or foreign universities of recognized standing who have completed three years of collegiate education may be admitted to the

Since the exam results are used by the medical schools in the selection of applicants, students should take the test no later than the spring before the application is submitted. The score obtained on this exam will be used by the Admissions Committee to process applications for admission to the School of Medicine along with the scholastic record and recommendations. Application for advanced status must be submitted according to the procedure described for admission to the first year.

The Medical College Admission Test is given under the auspices of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is required of applicants to Vanderbilt. The Admissions Committee begins reviewing applicants in September and will accept new applications until December IS prior to the September enrollment date. This deposit is credited for the payment of the first tuition and is returned by March 1, in case the student does not matriculate.
REGULATIONS
First year: Most of the year is spent studying anatomy, biochemistry and physiology. The flexibility of the fourth-year curriculum gives the student maximum opportunities for individual development. This professorship was established in 1947 by the members of the then second-year class.
Students who are interested in continuing their combined studies enroll in the Medical or Postgraduate School through the Admissions Committee, in the case of the Faculty of Medicine; and the department and dean in the case of a graduate school.

The combined degree has many advantages as it saves a certain amount of time in the overall length of the process of obtaining the two degrees. However, the main advantage is that the student is simultaneously involved in basic laboratory science and research and in medical studies, and after graduation has knowledge that is up-to-date and current in these areas, and moreover, he has arrived at a point of independent contribution and creativity in basic medical sciences.

GRANTS Candidates for the title of Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy can pursue work in the medical sciences given at the Faculty of Medicine, either in regular courses or in special elective courses, provided that such students are accepted by the heads of the respective departments and are enrolled in the University's Graduate School. Graduate work in medical sciences is regulated by the faculty of the Higher School. Candidates for the Master of Science degree in hearing and speech sciences can pursue careers in these fields at the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center and the School of Medicine.
Through the generosity of the Werthan family of Nashville, this professorship was established in 1951 to advance research in the general field of internal medicine. Darby, professor of biochemistry and chair of the department of biochemistry and director of the department of nutrition, currently holds the chair. Sanger, a 1931 graduate of Vanderbilt Medical School, a distinguished surgeon from Charlotte, North Carolina, and former president of the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni, this professorship was established in 1969 and funded in cooperation with the Department of Surgery for the purpose of advancing research in surgical biology and in the general field of surgery .
