Our Country was under the British colonial rule for several decades. The freedom struggle was aimed at securing independent and self-rule by throwing out the British Power. The freedom struggle finally met with success

in 1947 when India won freedom from the foreign rule that lasted for about 200 years. But it was during this period that the Indian Press was first born. The first newspaper was brought out in 1780 by an East India Company’s employee James Augustus Hiccky. It was called ‘Bengal Gazette’ or

‘Calcutta General Advertiser’. This paper mostly highlighted the personal lives, doings and wrongdoings of the British officials.
