Alitalia also jointly owns a company, Alitalia Servizi, with Fintecna, with Fintecna having the majority voting rights. Operational since 1st May 2005, the company is responsible for maintenance activities, airport services, centralised services and IT &

Telecommunications.The services provided by Alitalia Servizi to Alitalia are regulated by specific Alitalia, the national airline of Italy, with its fleet

of 179 aircraft flies nearly 24 million passengers every year.

Global overview of Alitalia

Alitalia - Linee Aeree Italiane S.p.A. has been transporting passengers and cargo throughout the world since 1947. Its services include the typical and closely related activities carried out by airline companies such as flight and ground operations, marketing, business strategies, and sales. In Italy, Alitalia serves 25 airports with 1,313 flights a week. In Europe, it serves 63 airports with 1,347 weekly flights. In the rest of the world, Alitalia planes take off and land at 22 airports with 124 flights every week. Since 2001, Alitalia has been a member of the SkyTeam alliance whose members include some of Europe's and the world's leading companies - Northwest, KLM, Air France, AeroMexico, CSA Czech Airlines, Continental, Delta, Aeroflot and Korean Air - and whose vast network provides services to 728 destinations in more than 130 countries.

In 2005, approximately 24 million passengers flew with Alitalia, representing an increase of 7.8 per cent compared with 2004.The fastest growing routes are those to Eastern Europe, India and China, all markets undergoing rapid expansion

Alitalia in India

Alitalia started its India operations in 1961, after opening its office in 1960, choosing Mumbai as its first destination. Today,Alitalia reaches out to two cities, Delhi and Mumbai in India with twelve weekly flights in the summer season, which go up to fourteen weekly flights in the winter season.

It operates at a passenger load factor of almost 75 per cent in India.Alitalia also offers onward flight connections for locations in Europe and United States to passengers travelling from India to Milan.

In India Alitalia has entered into agreements with other domestic airlines to offer connecting flights to the passengers travelling on Alitalia and also provide checking in facilities either way with assistance of Jet Airways. It has two direct offices in India located in Delhi and Mumbai. It has established a strong sales network through its sales agents in leading metros and other important towns and cities of India, from where leisure tourists as well as business tourists originate.These locations include Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Bangalore (Karnataka), Kolkata (West Bengal), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Kochi (Kerala), Goa, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Jallandhar, Chandigarh (Punjab), Pune (Maharashtra) and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala).

Alitalia offers direct flights to various global routes from Milan and Rome. It includes many destinations in North, Central and South America like Toronto, New York, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Caracas, San Paolo, Buenos Aires,Western and Eastern Europe, and destinations like Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing etc in Asia.This makes it a carrier of choice for many of its passengers.

Future plans

Alitalia has a long relationship with India dating back to 1960 and the airline recognises India as a prime strategic location for its business. Over the last decade, India has emerged as a high growth economy and hence, has witnessed a tremendous increase in business and tourism. Given this background Alitalia aims at increasing its current share in the passenger and cargo operations in India in the near future.
