ASSAM UNIVERSITY:

AN INTRODUCTION

Assam University, Silchar, is a Central University established by an Act of the Indian Parliament (Act XXIII of 1989), and came into existence in 1994. Situated in the Barak Valley of southern Assam, the University is nestled in a sprawling 600-acre campus at Dargakona, about 23 kms. from Silchar town. In 2007, Assam University opened a satellite campus at Diphu in the Karbi Anglong Hills District of Assam, thereby making quality higher education accessible to a wider section of society. With students’ strength about 3500 in the Silchar campus and 400 in Diphu campus, the University is a veritable melting pot of diverse communities, ideas and creativity. Apart from the two campuses of the University, there are 60 affiliated and permitted colleges in the five districts of south Assam, which together constitute the jurisdiction of Assam University and there are more than 26,000 students enrolled in the affiliated colleges.

Since 1994, Assam University has expanded both in size and reputation. Today, there are 34 postgraduate departments under 16 Schools of study in the Silchar campus and 08 departments in Diphu campus, offering a wide range of programmes geared towards equipping students and research scholars with knowledge, skills, experience and confidence, the benefits of which they can reap well into the future. Besides, there are several Centres of Study in the University dedicated to research of high quality. Recently, the University has developed a strategy for enhancing the range of pedagogic uses of technology. As part of this strategy, the University is in the process of gradually turning all its classrooms into state-of-the-art ones enabling teachers to teach using a wide variety of media. There's no gainsaying that in the last nineteen years of its relentless pursuit of academic excellence, Assam University has made giant strides in providing better academic atmosphere and improved infrastructural facilities.

In the background, there are hills and plains representing the Barak Valley and the hills districts. All the elements are ultimately put in a wheel of progress, so that the University acts as an instrument of change and development for the area within its jurisdiction. The promise of progress is represented by the Rising Sun which is shown as emerging across the symbol of technological growth. 'Assam University, Silchar' and 'Pratyayabodhakritirupapattaye' (in Devanagri) are inscribed in the Logo.

From the Desk of the Vice Chancellor

Assam University received accreditation from NAAC in the year 2008 and, we plan to go for second-cycle accreditation sometime in 2014. Full endeavour is given to prepare the Self Study Reports for submission to NAAC as the first step towards re-accreditation. We are also proposing to undergo a round of Academic and Administrative Audit by an external team of experts to ascertain our inadequacy or shortfall and so that we can undertake corrective measures.

The University organized its 13thConvocation in May 2013, which was graced by the presence of Hon’ble President of India, Hon’ble Governor of Assam and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam. Hon’ble President of India delivered the Convocation Address, and inaugurated Innovation Club in the University. In this connection, a meet of grass-root innovators was organized. Hon’ble President also met a group of Inspired Teachers. The University had the honour to host Hon’ble past President of India, Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who addressed the students.

The University received approval from the UGC to open two new Departments (Statistics at Silchar campus and Geography at Diphu campus). However, very few new posts were sanctioned for the existing Departments. The University is consistently trying to impress upon the UGC and MHRD to increase allocation of XII Plan fund to tide over the financial crisis.

(9)

The University took a major step forward towards international collaboration through an EU sponsored programme, called NAMASTE. Under this programme, students, faculty members and administrative staff members will be able to undertake research and training in selected European universities. A formal collaboration with Queen’s University, Belfast (QUB) is underway and a delegation from QUB visited Assam University recently.

The University began teaching through distant mode and played a major role in setting up a Community College imparting vocational training in one of its affiliated colleges. A number of national and international seminars/workshops were organized in this year, and the University celebrated its Foundation Day through an interaction programme involving our Hon’ble Chancellor with Shri. Salim Arif. The University celebrated all major national programmes with due reverence. The University is also aiming at major administrative reforms, such as framing of recruitment and promotion rules for staff members and upgrading medical support schemes.

The annual report of 2013-14 is a reflection of what was achieved during the year. The major areas of focus would be strengthening research activities, recruitment of quality teachers and revision of curricula in various disciplines to meet the ever-changing global educational scenario.

(Somnath Dasgupta) Vice Chancellor
