Department of Life Science & Bioinformatics

Year of Establishment : 1996

Head of the Department : Prof. Sarbani Giri Research & Development activities

Currently the department has five Professors, three Associate Professors, six Assistant Professors and five technical staffs along with 84 students at P.G level and more than 100 numbers of Research Scholars both in Ph.D and M.Phil level. The faculty members are engaged in research activity in diverse fields as mammalian cell and molecular biology, health science, plant genomics research, computer aided drug designing, natural product, biodiversity, plant taxonomy study, toxicology and agricultural research. Four of the faculty members have been awarded by prestigious international fellowships during this period. The faculty members got training from renowned institutions like NIH, USA, Hiroshima University, RIBRM, Japan, Okayama University, Japan, UC Berkeley and UC Riverside USA and Chicago University, USA , Bradford University, UK. , Liverpool John Moores University, UK, University Pitsburg, and from some other renouned universities .All the faculty members are actively involved in research in their respective fields in collaboration with various national/international institutes.

During this period the faculty members of this department has published 01 books. The Faculty members have published papers in National Journals and in impacted International journals (Total Impact Factor of publication during 2013-2014 is 125) .The Department has organized workshops and symposium to disseminate the knowledge in biological Sciences.76 Ph.D. students have been registered in the department. 12 have been awarded, 8 submitted theses. 12 of our students have qualified UGC-SET and working as doctoral or post doctoral fellow in prestigious universities / institutions around the world. Our students got jobs in different universities/ institutes, colleges and other organizations.

Department of Life Science & Bioinformatics have been recognized as UGC-SAP department. This is the pioneer department in the University recognized under SAP in 2007.

Department of Life Science has been recognized under DST FIST Programme in 2008 for infrastructure development. Department has awarded with UGC SAP DRS-II in the year 2013 after successful completion of DRS-I.

Under the initiative of faculty members of Department of Life Science &

Bioinformatics, DBT, Govt. of India has established two institutional facilities like Bioinformatics Centre and Biotech Hub in the university and the university has identified these two facilities as independent institutional centres.

Department has received 22 Major Research Projects funds from funding agencies
