The Department had embedded the idea to have a better curriculum and innovative approach to develop excellent legal skills amongst the students studying law in one of the remote areas of India. B.A.LL.B (Hon’s) Course was introduced in the year 2004. Subsequently when students started coming up with flying colours the institution felt the pressing need of students to introduce LL.M.as there was need for reinvigorating legal research. In the year 2011, LL.M course was introduced .Further, the need to promote systemization of law ,to encourage and conduct investigation in legal and allied fields and to cultivate the science of law in the region ,Ph.D. curriculum was introduced in the year 2014. Within the last ten years, the Department of Law has emerged as an important centre of legal studies and research catering the needs of students pursuing legal education not only in Barak Valley, but also for the entire eastern region. The department in near future shall emerge as an outstanding nerve centre of legal studies and research in this region. The department has also adopted various innovative techniques and methods to both for theoretical and clinical legal education

The Department has introduced IPP Course in the year 2014 with objectives mentioned

• Create an intellectually stimulating environment encouraging participatory learning.

• The Department is striving to become a centre for academic excellence by setting up a Legal Information Research Centre in North East India.

• An important centre of legal studies and research catering the needs of students pursuing legal education not only in Barak Valley, but also for the entire eastern region.

The Department is also guiding students in dissertation which is inculcating the foundation of legal research as a part of their LL.M. Curriculum. Legal Research would produce good academicians in the field of Law in near future. Twelve Dissertation have been submitted in the year 2012 and 2013 on various important aspects of Law. Seven students have qualified for Ph.D in IPP.

The department has a strong interdisciplinary research focus. Located in one of the 34 Biodiversity Hotspots of the world from where precious baseline data is available, our thrust areas are-

 Plant and animal diversity of the region across varying geographical scales.

 Ecosystem diversity at both structural and functional levels.

 Agro-ecosystems diversity and management.

 Rich indigenous knowledge system of various tribal and traditional societies regarding conservation mechanism and ecosystem management.

 Environmental monitoring and impact assessment.

 Sustainable natural resource management.

 Remote sensing and GIS

There are several ongoing research projects in the department with national and international funding. A few are in the offing backed with a strong human resource potential of our M. Sc., M. Phil and Ph.D students. The department is making major strides in all the focus areas.
