The total c a t c h m e n t area of the T a r a p h l n l Is a b o u t 331 sq km. G e o l o g y : Ve ry l i t t l e p u b l i s h e d g e o l o g i c a l w o r k 1s a v a i l a b l e on the p r e s e n t area. The area c o n s t i t u t e s the e a s t e r n e x t r e m i t y of the P r e c a m b r l a n b e l t of the S l n g h b h u m T h r u s t Zone. T h o u g h some w o r k has been r e p o r t e d from b l a c k and w h i t e I m a g e r i e s 1n India, not m u c h w or k has b ee n d o n e u s i n g c o l o u r I n f r a r e d I m a g e r i e s . R a g h a v s w a m y and V a l d y a n a d h a n ( 1980) c a r r i e d o u t d e t a i l e d land use s t u d i e s u s i n g low f l y i n g I m a g e r i e s . S i n g h et al . (1983) and S a x e n a et a l .(1 98 3 ) h a v e a p p l i e d r e m o t e s e n s i n g t e c h n i q u e s for l a n d u s e m a p p i n g w i t h p a r t i c u l a r r e f e r e n c e to a g r i c u l t u r a l a s p e c t s . The a r ea u n d e r I n v e s t i g a t i o n l i e s to the s o u t h of the T r o p i c of C a n c e r and falls w i t h i n the t r o p i c zone. The c l i m a t e of the' d i s t r i c t 1s c h a r a c t e r i s e d by an o p p r e s s i v e l y hot s u m m e r , w i t h h i g h h u m i d i t y n e a r l y all the y e a r r o u n d and well d i s t r i b u t e d r a i n f a l l d u r i n g the m o n s o o n m o n t h s . T he c o l d w e a t h e r s t a r t s f r o m a b o u t the m i d d l e of N o v e m b e r and lasts till the end of F e b r u a r y . The p e r i o d f r o m M a r c h to M ay r e p r e s e n t s the s u m m e r .
