Significant Weather Features

♦ Due to moisture and light winds at lower tropospheric levels over Indo-Gangetic plains, Dense to very dense fog in many/most pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh in night/morning hours during next 24 hours. Subsequently, Dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab and Haryana & Chandigarh for subsequent 4 days. Dense Fog in isolated pockets also very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Rajasthan, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Tripura in night/morning hours during next 2 days.

♦ Due to dry north/northwesterly winds from Himalayas over plains of northwest India, Cold Wave Conditions very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan during 24th-27th December; Cold Day to severe cold day Conditions also very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh & Cold Day Conditions in isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh during next 24 hours.

♦ The Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 23rd December over Southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 10.1°N and longitude 84.2°E about 370 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 480 km east of Nagappattinam (Tamil Nadu) and 540 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu). It is likely to move gradually west-southwestwards towards Comorin Area across Sri Lanka during next 48 hours.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into Southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off Sri Lanka coast during 23rd–25th December; Gulf of Mannar and Comorin Area during 23rd-27th; along & off south Tamil Nadu and west Sri Lanka coasts during 23rd-26th; Southeast Arabian Sea along & off Kerala coast on 27th December.

Heavy rainfall likely at isolated places over south Coastal Tamil Nadu on 25th & 26th December; south Kerala on 26th and Lakshadweep on 27th December.

Main Weather Observations

Rainfall/thundershower observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Chief rainfall amount recorded (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday):(in cm): Car Nicobar-1.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Very Dense fog in isolated pockets over Bihar; Dense fog in isolated pockets over Punjab, Chandigarh, northwest Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh; Moderate fog in isolated pockets over Jammu division, Haryana, Delhi and Tripura and Shallow fog in isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal.

Visibility recorded (at 0530 hours IST of today)(in metre): Purnea-25; Patiala, Chandigarh, Ganganagar, Churu & Bareilly-50 each; Jammu, Amritsar, Hissar, Palam (Delhi) & Agartala-200 each; Bhatinda-400; Safdarjung (Delhi), Bikaner, Gorakhpur, Gaya & Kolkata-500 each.

Yesterday, Cold day to severe cold day conditions prevailed in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana and northwest Rajasthan.

♦ Yesterday, Cold wave conditions prevailed in isolated pockets over Punjab.

Minimum Temperature Departures (as on 22-12-2022): Minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over West Madhya Pradesh; at a few places over Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over East Rajasthan, Andaman &

Nicobar, Assam & Meghalaya and Sub Himalayan West Bengal; at many places over Punjab; at a few places over Gujarat state, Coastal Andhra Pradesh &

Yanam and Madhya Maharashtra; at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal. They were below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan & Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka; at a few places over Rayalaseema; at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, West Rajasthan and Bihar and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 4.6°C was reported at Bikaner (West Rajasthan) over plains of the country.

Maximum Temperature Departures (as on 22-12-2022): Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1 °C to 5.1 °C ) at many places over Vidarbha; at a few places over East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana; at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6 °C to 3.0 °C) at most places over Assam & Meghalaya, Marathwada; at many places over Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka; at a few places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan & Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Konkan & Goa, Kerala & Mahe; at isolated places over Gujarat Region and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam. They were markedly below normal (-5.1 °C or less) at many places over Punjab; appreciably below normal (-3.1 °C to -5.1 °C ) at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; at a few places over Bihar; at isolated places over West Rajasthan; below normal (-1.6 °C to -3.0 °C) at a few places over West Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 36.2° was reported at Honavar (Coastal Karnataka) over the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 23rd December over Southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 10.1°N and longitude 84.2°E about 370 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 480 km east of Nagappattinam (Tamil Nadu) and 540 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu). ♦ Shallow to moderate fog likely at isolated pockets over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during next 5 days and over Gangetic West Bengal & Odisha during next 2 days.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days during 28th-30th December, 2022

♦ Scattered to fairly Widespread light/moderate rainfall over Tamil Nadu & Kerala and isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Karnataka and Islands.

♦ Isolated to scattered light rainfall/snowfall likely over Northeast India.

♦ Dry weather likely over rest parts of the country.

Squally weather with speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely over Southwest Bay of Bengal, along and off Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts; wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over adjoining areas of southeast &

westcentral Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

24 Dec (Day 2): Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal.

Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan.

Dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

♦ Last week’s Depression over Eastcentral and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea moved west-northwestwards, intensified into a Deep Depression in the early morning hours of 15th December 2022 and accordingly it lay over Eastcentral Arabian Sea, at a distance of about 620 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 670 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) in the morning of 15th; moving westwards and then west-southwestwards, it lay over Eastcentral Arabian Sea at a distance of about 930 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 1000 km southwest of Panjim (Goa) in the morning of 16th; moving west-northwestwards ,it weakened into a Depression in the evening of the same day and lay over Westcentral & adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea, at a distance of about 1020 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 1090 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa);maintaining the intensity of Depression, it lay over Westcentral Arabian Sea at a distance of about 1220 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 1300 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) in the morning of 17th; it weakened into a Well Marked Low pressure area in the evening of 17th December 2022 over Westcentral Arabian Sea and with the same intensity it lay over Westcentral Arabian Sea on 18th; it weakened further into a Low Pressure Area and lay over Westcentral Arabian Sea on 19th before getting less marked in the early morning hours of 20th December 2022; since the system had been located off the coast in the beginning of the week itself and had moved away westwards subsequently, it had not caused any adverse weather over the mainland; however, under its influence, widespread rainfall/thunderstorms along with isolated heavy rainfall activity had occurred over Kerala & Mahe on one day in the beginning of the week;

it had also caused scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Lakshadweep Islands on two to three days and isolated rainfall activity over parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra on one day each in the beginning of the week.

♦ Last week’s Low Pressure Area over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean persisted over the same region during 15th to 17th December 2022; shifting westwards slightly, it lay over central parts of South Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean during 18th to 20th December 2022; it lay as a Well Marked Low Pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean on 21st December 2022; under the influence of the system, scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity had occurred over Andaman & Nicobar Islands along with fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity reported over the same areas on a single day; isolated heavy rainfall also had occurred over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on a single day during the first half of the week.

♦ Movement of troughs in lower tropospheric westerlies had caused isolated rainfall/snowfall activity over Arunachal Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on two to three days during the week;

under their influence, isolated rainfall activity had occurred over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura also on two to three days.

Fog

♦ Dense to very dense fog had been reported at many places over Punjab on three days; at a few places over Haryana, northern parts of West Rajasthan, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh on three days, over Punjab, West Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Tripura on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog had been reported at many places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day; at isolated places over Tripura on three days, over Assam & Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh on two days each, over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East & West Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

Heavy rain

♦ Heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala & Mahe on one day each during the week.

21 December 2022 and the lowest minimum temperature of 1.3 C had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 16th December 2022 over the plains of the country during the week.

♦ Last week’s Depression over Eastcentral and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea moved west-northwestwards and intensified into a Deep Depression in the early morning hours of 15th and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of 15th December 2022 near Latitude 13.9°N and Longitude 68.2°E, about 580 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 630 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 1550 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); moving west-northwestwards further, it lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 15th December 2022 over Eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 13.9°N and Longitude 67.8°E, about 620 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep),670 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 1510 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); further moving west-northwestwards, it lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of 15th December 2022 over Eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 14.1°N and Longitude 66.8°E, about 720 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep),770 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 1400 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); moving westwards and then moving west-southwestwards, it lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 16th December 2022 over Eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 13.9°N and Longitude 64.7°E about 930 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep),1000 km southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 1190 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); it moved west-northwestwards, weakened into a Depression and lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of 16th December 2022 over Westcentral & adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 14.0°N and Longitude 63.8°E, about 1020 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 1090 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 1090 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); it moved west-northwestwards, then westwards and then west-southwestwards and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 17th December 2022 over Westcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 14.0°N and Longitude 61.9°E about 1220 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 1300 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa) and 900 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman); moving west-southwestwards, it weakened into a Well Marked Low pressure area at 1730 hrs IST of 17th December 2022 over Westcentral Arabian Sea with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid tropospheric levels; maintaining the intensity of Well Marked Low Pressure Area, it persisted over Westcentral Arabian Sea with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric on 18th; it weakened into a Low Pressure Area and lay over Westcentral Arabian Sea with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid- tropospheric levels on 19th; it has become less marked in the early morning hours of 20th December 2022.

♦ Last week’s Low Pressure Area over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean persisted over the same region with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid tropospheric levels from 15th to 17th December 2022; it lay over central parts of South Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels during 18th to 20th; it lay as a Well Marked Low Pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal &adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels from the early morning hours of 21st December 2022.

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a trough in mid tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level had moved away northeastwards on 15th December 2022.

♦ A Western Disturbance was seen as a trough in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Longitude 53°E to the north of Latitude 25°N on 17th December 2022; it continued as a trough in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Longitude 58°E to the north of Latitude 28°N on 18th, roughly along Longitude 64°E to the north of Latitude 32°N on 19th, roughly along Longitude 68°E to the north of Latitude 32°N on 20th and roughly along Longitude 70°E to the north of Latitude 30°N on 21st December 2022.

♦ A trough in westerlies with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Longitude 91°E to the north of Latitude 23°N on 17th December 2022 and roughly along Longitude 92°E to the north of Latitude 23°N on 18th; it has moved away northeastwards on 19th December 2022.

♦ A trough in westerlies with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Longitude 85°E to the north of Latitude 24°N on 19th December 2022; it ran roughly along Longitude 88°E to the north of Latitude 25°N on 20th and roughly along Longitude 90°E to the north of Latitude 25°N on 21st December 2022.
