Relationship between electrical conductivity of saturation past extract and different soil:water ratios

Abstract

Despite the increasing application of salinity sensors to estimate salt concentration at field level, laboratory analysis of aquatic extracts is still the most common method for assessing salinity and its potential risks. Depending on the method and purpose, various methods are used to measure salinity. Direct measurement of some of these parameters can be time consuming, costly and error-prone. Therefore, researchers are trying to estimate them from methods that are easier to measure. The purpose of this research was to find the simple relationships between conductivity of saturation past extract (ECe) and different soil:water ratios in Zarnaz plain. For this purpose, 80 soil samples were collected from the study area and pH and EC were meausered in saturation past and 1:2.5, 1:5 and 1:10 soil to water ratio extractc. The results showed a high correlation (R2) between the electrical conductivity of saturation past extract and different soil to water ratios especially EC measured in 1:5 ratio of soil to water. Therefore, using the linear model of ECe = 4.6EC1:5-0.9 with R² = 0.91, the electrical conductivity of the saturation past extract can be estimated from an electrical conductivity of 1: 5 soil to water with an acceptable accuracy.
