However, because both the Li metal and NCM811 are highly reactive with the electrolytes, unstable Li metal/electrolyte interfaces and NCM811/electrolyte interfaces are formed, leading to side reactions at the interface and short cycle life. Such peculiar solvation structures formed a stable C-N/C-F-rich solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Li metal, which enabled exceptional long-term cycling performance of Li metal along with high Coulomb efficiency of >97% . Powered by the combination of unique passivation layers formed on both electrodes, the all-Li||NCM811 cells provide exceptional improvements in electrochemical performance under 3.0 mAh cm-2 high-load cathodes with limited amounts of Li metal, without solutions of transition metal ions (TM).

In addition, because it formed a stable SEI layer on Li metal for efficient Li metal cycling, they achieved the excellent cycling ability of Li||NCM111. Even if Li-metal batteries could be made using these electrolyte systems, they are still difficult to commercialize due to their limited thermal stability. In addition, they are only used for a cathode with a low Ni content (< 80%), which is insufficient to fulfill high energy density batteries.

Although various studies have been carried out to achieve Li metal batteries as described above, previous papers use very thick Li metal (> 50 μm) and low charge level cathodes (< 2.0 mAh cm-2) .22-27 Since the cycle life of Li metal batteries depends on the utilization rate of the Li metal capacity,28 the use of thick Li metal and low charge level cathodes, as in previous works, does not have a meaningful lifetime the cycle. Until now, since improving the cycle performance of Li metal batteries was more important, the capacity utilization rate has been overlooked. Wang et al., Li||NCM811 full cells using limited amounts of Li-metal was achieved.29 However, the cathode loading is only 2 mAh cm-2, which is insufficient for practical applications.

Consequently, to realize the realistic high energy density Li metal batteries, it is necessary to use limited amounts of Li metal and cathodes with a high charge level (≥ 3.0 mAh cm-2). Here, we report a highly efficient approach to achieve the high-energy-density and high-safety Li-metal batteries by means of controlling solution structures of Liion with a suitable salt/solvent combination. We use propylene carbonate (PC) as a solvent, which has excellent thermal and oxidative stability,3 and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) salt, which is well known to form a stable SEI layer on the surface of the Li metal to form

To further improve the stability of the SEI layer, we also added 7% (v/v) fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), which can be polymerized on the Li metal surface and firmly bind the inorganic compounds of the SEI layer.30 This nonflammable electrolyte system formed a stable C-N-rich SEI layer /C-F, on the surface of Li metal when the LiFSI concentration is 4 M. the C-N/C-F-rich SEI layer enables remarkable long-term cycling stability of the symmetric Li||Li cell over 2,500 h, along with limited polarization enhancement. Also, a stable CEI layer was formed on the surface of NCM811, which successfully inhibited the oxidative decomposition of electrolytes and dissolution of TM ions.

The combination of unique stabilization on both Li-metal and NCM811 enabled the excellent cycling stability of Li||NCM811 full cells (86% retention at the 100th cycle), when the thin Li-metal (20 μm) and NCM811 at a high charge level ( 3.0 mAh cm-2) were used (73% of the capacity utilization of Li metal).

The electrolytes were placed on two glass plates and tightly sealed in an Ar-filled glove box to prevent any contamination from the air. XPS (K-alpha, ThermoFisher) was performed on cycled Li metal and NCM811 with monochromatized Al-Kα radiation. SEM measurements (S-4800, Hitachi) were performed on the cycled Li metal after 20 depositions with an electron accelerating voltage of 10 kV.

TOF-SIMS (TOF-SIMS 5, ION TOF) was performed to analyze the TM ion solutions on the NCM811 surface after cycling test with Bi32+ gun at 50 keV. TGA (Q500, TA) with isothermal mode at 80 ºC for 100 minutes was used to estimate the weight loss of the electrolytes as a function of time. The exothermic interfacial reaction between the electrolytes and delithide NCM811 was inspected by DSC measurements (Q200, TA).

As mentioned above, the SEI layer is expected to have a low Li metal protection effect, since it cannot effectively prevent side reactions between Li metal and electrolytes. To gain insight into the Li metal protection effect of these SEI layers, electrochemical properties will be investigated in depth in the next part. We assembled Li||Li symmetric cells to confirm the Li metal protection effect of SEI layers formed differently depending on the LiFSI concentrations.

This is because the SEI layer dominated by organic components could not isolate the contact between the Li metal and the electrolytes, and finally electrolyte depletion occurred due to the continuous consumption of electrolytes.41 In contrast, at the same current density , Li||Li cells at 4 M remarkable long-term cycling stability for 2500 h was achieved, together with a limited increase in overpotential. The very small Rint and Rct at 4 M supports the C-N/C-F-rich SEI layer, has the ability to enhance Li ion migration near the Li metal/electrolyte interface, and enables the stable operation of experimentally observed Li||Li cells. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images in Figure 2.3 compared the surfaces of Li metal after being cycled in different electrolytes.

During cycling at 1 M, a significant amount of acicular dendrites and dead Li formed on the surface of the Li metal anode (Figure 2.3a). This morphology increases the specific surface area of ​​Li metal, thereby accelerating side reactions between Li metal and electrolytes.43 This results in poor cycling stability, as shown in the galvanostatic cycle result (Figure 2.2a). However, the Li metal surface treated in 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC showed a uniform and dense structure with a round-shaped deposit morphology (Figure 2.3b).

Such morphology of Li metal can significantly alleviate safety problems and minimize side reactions of electrolytes.22. From the above electrochemical performances, it was shown that the C-N/C-F-rich SEI layer formed at 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC has excellent Li metal protection effect. In summary, the 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC showed remarkable stability towards not only the Li metal but also high voltage cathodes.

Accordingly, we fabricated Li-metal solid cells using NCM811 with 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC to achieve high energy density batteries. Although various studies have been performed to demonstrate Li-metal batteries, very thick Li-metals (> 50 µm) have been used in previous papers (Table 2.2). Furthermore, since the lifetime of Li-metal batteries depends on the degree of capacity utilization of the Li-metal, the use of thick Li-metal, as in the previous papers, allows achieving the falsehood of excellent long-term cycling (Figure 2.6).

In addition to the electrochemical advantages contributed by 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC, another advantage is non-flammability, which is very valuable for Li-metal batteries but unsatisfied with commercial organic electrolytes. From the above results, it should be noted that 4 M LiFSI-PC/FEC can be proposed as a non-flammable one to effectively solve the safety problem of Li-metal batteries.
