Industrial estates are
planned
areas of industrialconcentration which are often used as an effective device in
accelerating
industrial and economicdevelopment
of areeion.
This
study
is aimed atinvestigating
the extent ofcomplemen
tari
ty
between the industries in the Pandar=tran Industrialstte nd the
seaport
of PortKlang.
Of the various
physical
factorsexamined,
it was foundt.ha t nearness to
seaport
had been very instrumental in the Loc. tion of all the industries studied within the Pandamaran Industrial Estate. This is because theport
serves as a breakbulk
point
and distribution centre for industrial T'3.w mater-ialsand
goods imported/exported through
it. The industries too tendto reduce their
transportation
cost from such a location.Comparison
of the labour force structure of the PandamaranEndustr-i.a.L Estate and the
Klang
PortAuthority
revealed thatthe bulk of the labour
employed
in theport
aremales,
thuscomplementing
the female labouremployed
in the IndustrialEstate.
The
analysis
of thestudy
shows that there exists socioeconomic
complementarit
to agreat
extent between the workersin the Industrial Estate and those
working
in theport.
Furthermore, it was found that there also exists infrastructural
complementarity
between the Industrial Estate and theport, whereby
the Industrial Estate makes up for thedeficiency
insome of the Lnfra.structu ra.L facilities
