STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION USING FUZZY ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS (FAHP) WITH VIKOR METHOD

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of student academic performance is most relevant to the tertiary institution in order to obtain a high reputation and rank position as compared to others. Essentially, the performance of students has been considered excellent or not solely based on academic result. Nonetheless, there are few colleges that defined good student based on student’s performance over other accomplishments. In this study, the student performance was evaluated based on student’s academic result and their involvement in university activities. Therefore, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and VIKOR method, a decision-making instrument was constructed in this project that focuses on the selection process to calculate and to rank the most successful student in the university. In this research, three important main criteria and several sub- criteria have been considered. The main criteria are academic, club involvement and participation. The weighting of each criterion and sub-criteria were calculated by using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method. The results were ranked by using Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR method). Based on the results the student who has the lowest value of Qi will be at the top ranking of student’s performance and the highest value of Qi will be at the bottom ranking based on VIKOR method.

1. INTRODUCTION

The academic performance and graduation rates of the student have been of interest to higher education institutions. Evaluation of student academic performance is most relevant to the tertiary institution in order to obtain a high reputation and rank position as compared to others [1]. Essentially, the performance of students depends on exam results. Moreover, there are few colleges that treated the good student based on academics performance only over other accomplishments. However, some universities also take into account the performance of students in sports, co-curriculum, attitude, merit and others in determining the excellence of a student. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to help the decision makers to rank the most successful students in university based on criteria using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) with VIKOR method.

2. METHODOLOGY

Three main criteria are evaluated in this study which are Academic Performance (CCPA 3.0 and above), Club Involvements and Participation in the events organized by the university.The proposed research was modeled by using FAHP-VIKOR method. The integrated criteria and sub-criteria were weighed according to these methods [2-3]. The steps involve are shown below:

● Identify the main criteria and sub-criteria

● Structure the hierarchy of the problem

● Structure the pairwise comparison matrix of criteria

● Compute defuzzification and normalization and test for consistency

● Calculate the weight of the criteria and sub-criteria

● Create evaluation matrix for VIKOR and calculate the normalized value

● Determine the best and worst values

● Compute the distance of alternatives to ideal solution

● Calculate the VIKOR values Qi

● Rank the alternatives by Qi values

3. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This research was conducted to propose an effective method for the evaluation of student’s performance in university. The results were calculated using the proposed FAHP-VIKOR method. The final results for top ten (10) alternatives (students) are presented in Table 1.

Based on Table 1, the student who has the lowest value of Qi will be at the top ranking of student’s performance and the highest value of Qi will be at the bottom ranking based on VIKOR method. The result show the student who have the lowest Qi value is student A25 followed by A28, A9, A11 and A4 which mean A25 has the best student’s performance.
