Assalammualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and a very good morning.

Alhamdulillah, all praises are due to Allah, with His grace and inayah that we could gather here today to attend the 1st Regional Conference on Applied and Engineering Mathematics 2010 or in short RCAEM 2010 this morning.

It is a great privilege and pleasure for me to welcome all the participants of this conference. I wish to express my appreciation to all of you for the overwhelming response to this conference. The enthusiastic support that you have given to this conference is a testimony to our common concern with regards to the importance of mathematics for national development.

Therefore, I would like to congratulate the Institute of Engineering Mathematics, UniMAP for taking the initiatives to hold this inaugural conference. They have managed courageously, despite all odds to organize the RCAEM 2010.

In this regard, I am pleased that Institute of Engineering Mathematics, UniMAP together with Unit of Fundamental

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Malaysia is on its way to become a fully developed country by the year 2020 and aims to provide a wholesome education to the young generations by emphasizing on the creation of competent K- workforce. At the same time as not neglecting the need to equip them with traditional knowledge.

In order to lend a hand to achieve the aims, UniMAP have been developed by means of producing competent workforce. Curriculum for the Bachelor Degree has been legislating to fulfill the local current requirements and precisely compliant the Washington Accord.

The lessons emphasize of theory and practical which is suitable for the industrial needs. In addition, students were prepared with communication skills, entrepreneurial, management as well as social and ethical development. All the efforts have been made to generate engineers and professionals who are not only capable in

their areas, but also able to be independent and full of moral values.

Furthermore, the recognition of the importance of mathematics in today’s world has rapidly increased. For many professions such as engineering, physics, economics, computing, information technology and accountancy, an effective grasp of the discipline of mathematics is an absolute must.

Fundamental to this is the role played by mathematicians and its affiliated areas. A strong foundation in mathematics is indeed essential for the understanding of the scientific and economics forces in a progressive society.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

For that reason, UniMAP has been developed the Institute of Engineering Mathematics (IMK) to be a unit to plan and to observe Engineering Mathematics’ curriculum. IMK also play the roles as a references center who gives proficient service in mathematical research, simulation, statistics and operational research as well as a research institution for engineering mathematics.

With this timely conference, I urge participants to take the opportunity to actively exchange ideas and participate in formal and informal discussions. I hope that the conference will be successful in its deliberations to further enhance the understanding and integration of mathematical knowledge.

It is my fervent hope that fruitful discussions will be achieved during these two days and I am sure that this meeting will strengthen collaborative research and networking among the participants especially in applied and engineering mathematics.

Finally, I wish that all participants will have a wonderful time exchanging ideas and sharing the knowledge during the conference, renewing old friendship and making new acquaintances. Perhaps RCAEM mark the beginning of a long-lasting relationship in collaborative work among the participants.

Dengan lafaz Bismillahirrahmanirrahim…saya dengan ini merasmikan RCAEM 2010 pada pagi ini.

Thank you.
