GOD’S WORDS FOR TODAY (Mk. 8:34- 9:1) The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark
GOSPEL: Mark 8:34 - 9:1
And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.
REFLECTION:
The cross of Christ leads to victory and freedom from sin and death. What is the cross which Jesus Christ commands me to take up each day? Are you ready to lose all for Jesus Christ in order to gain all with Jesus Christ?
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus Christ, I want to follow you as your disciple. I gladly offer all that I have to you. Amen.
Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

2 FROM THE INSTITUTIONAL SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE:
Strategic Direction on Creating Sustainable Futures
As students, how can we help to save up to 5 to 10 percent on our household energy bill?
Just by turning off small devices and appliances, you can save money and electricity. When left plugged in, our electronic gadgets and basic appliances, still use what’s called phantom or vampire energy, even when they are turned off or in sleep mode. A plugged-in cell phone, laptop and game console chargers draw energy even when it’s not charging.
Before you leave the for the day, unplug your cell phone/laptop/game console chargers, televisions, wi-fi modems, switch off the lights and turn off the fans and air conditioning units. Train our minds to make this a habit.

FROM THE INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES:
2019 Novel Coronavirus
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.
A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.
Common signs of infection include:
• respiratory symptoms,
• fever, cough,
• shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
• In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
WHO’s standard recommendations
• Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water;
• When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw tissue away immediately and wash hands;
• Avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough;
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth;
• If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early and share previous travel history with your health care provider;
• Avoid spitting in public;
• The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, milk or animal organs should be handled with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practice.
Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy
You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times;
• Before and after eating food
• Before, during, and after preparing food
• Before and after treating a cut or wound
• After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
• After using the toilet
• After touching garbage
• After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
• After handling pet food or pet treats
Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
9 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
