Objective
(Description of the service being
provided; History of service provision)
The Geography Field School (Geography 192: Field Methods in Geography), is a course-based extension program of the Department of Geography of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy of UP Diliman.
The main objective of the course is for students to apply the theories and skills they learned under the Geography curriculum through the conduct of field research and through engagement with the
community. This also serves as an opportunity for the Department to extend its services to local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs), people’s organizations (POs), and other institutions in need of assistance in formulating their resource management and development plans, or in the implementation of programs that foster capacity-building in local communities. The course also fulfills service learning’s goal of enhancing academic learning among students and faculty, while extending assistance to communities in a professional manner. In fact, most of our graduates have used the skills they have learned from this course in their professional work.
Since 1995, the Department has conducted work in over 40 sites across the country, partnering with LGUs, NGOs, POs, and other institutions in the process. Such engagements have yielded substantial documents, reports, informative materials, maps, and other outputs in a variety of media, most of which are vital inputs for local resource management and development planning.
The implementation of the Local Government Code of 1991 provided an opportunity for the Geography Department to contribute in enhancing the capacity of LGUs to adopt with the devolution of governance and
management responsibilities into their mandate by providing technical assistance in gathering, consolidating, and analyzing physical and socio- economic data to generate information that are useful for management planning.
