BADMINTON

COURSE TITLE: Physical Activities Toward Health and Fitness 1: Badminton COURSE CODE: 7PE4

NUMBER OF UNITS: 2 units CONTACT HOURS: 2 hours Pre-requisite subject/s: 7PE3

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Wearing of PE Uniform, badminton racket, running shoes or badminton shoes, PA log, food log, participation in the prepared drills, games, and officiating

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Physical Activities toward Health and Fitness 1 is a course that provides physical activities for the purpose of optimizing health and fitness.

Badminton is a racket sport played by two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles) by serving and hitting the shuttlecock back and forth across the net until the opponent cannot return the shot. This course tackles the fundamental skills of badminton that include strokes (forehand, backhand, overhead), footwork, stance, shots (clear, drop shot, smash, drive, net play) and service (long, short and drive). It also deals with the familiarization of the facilities and equipment, terminologies, duties and responsibilities of the officials and simplified rules of the game. It also gives emphasis on the execution of the basic skills which will provide the students the enhancement of their individual skills in a series of demonstrations, drills and individual performance tasks reinforcing their ability through competitive games and tournament experiences. In conjunction with this, fitness levels, PA participation and dietary/

eating patterns are evaluated to monitor one’s progress and achievement of personal fitness and dietary goals.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the course, students are expected to:

1. improve personal fitness from baseline (pre-test) levels;

2. demonstrate movement competence and confidence;

3. assess a personal food log based on dietary recommendations beneficial to one’s body;

4. display the value of fair play, empathy, respect for others’ abilities and diversity by understanding how these can influence their interaction with others;

5. devise and apply a range of strategies to improve one’s physical activity performance and those of others;

6. observe safety precautions before, during and after activity;

7. integrate different strategies and techniques in game competition.

8. enhance and advocate for one’s personal and other’s fitness, safety and wellness through physical activity participation and/or leadership;
