The results of the interviews indicate that many of the teachers recognised the adoption local English in the classroom can bring several benefits, these being: it can accommodate the linguistic background of the students and has some practical valuein the classroom: it makes the students comprehend the lesson easier; it is useful for teaching English grammar; it can motivate the students to speak; it can be used to attract students’ attention; it helps to build student self-confidence; and, it can help the students do well in the English test. Interestingly, the agreement for the adoption of local English in the classroom is also shown by the majority of teachers participated in the study. This means most English teachers in Central Java context are aware of the role of local English in creating child friendly classroom. They acknowlege that the use of local English in English classroom can be seen as a way to respect their students’ own cultural identity, language and values, for the national values of the country in which the child is living (CRC, 1990) since the local English not only builds the children self confidence but also empowers their cultural identity.

However, this finding shows a mismatch between the teachers’s belief with teacher’s practice in the classroom. From the interview result, it can be seen that the teacher of second level disagreed about the use of student’s mother tongue in English classroom because she believes that she has to make an environment where the students can practice English all the time, an environment which cannot be created at home, except in English course. So, the teacher of second level believes that the amount of Bahasa Indonesia used in English classroom should only be 20% of the class time and English should be 80% because, as she stated in the interview, if the students keep using Bahasa Indonesia, their English will not be improved. Yet, what the teachers do in the classroom is sometimes not in accordance with the teacher’s beliefs. It might be because the students faced some difficulties in understanding what the teacher explained when the teacher used English all the time. Besides, there are some external factors which can lead the teachers to use Bahasa Indonesia in English classroom: the composition of the class and each individual student, the amount of material which have to be delivered in one meeting, and the limited time for each meeting.

In addition to giving day-to- day instructions, teacher’s use of classroom English involves languages used to deal with academic or thinking skills like a) describing, classifying and comparing, b) defining and exemplifying, c) describing processes and effects, d) using statistics, e) explaining and hypothesizing, and f) thinking critically (Hughes & Moate, ibid, p. 143). When classifying, people divide ideas into categories in a logical way. The logical ordering however depends on the purpose in making the classification. One of the ways they do this is by looking for relationships among objects or ideas, and classifying them into groups according to their similarities and differences (Hamp-Lyons & Heasley, 1987). Hamp-Lyons & Heasley propose some types of logical ordering including spacial relationship, time order (oldest – newest), general to particular hierarchy, scale (of importance e.g. most important – least important), size (largest – smallest), comparison – contrast, linear and cyclical processes, and familiarity (best known – least known).

The used of EMI (English as Medium Instruction) is no longer a new phenomenon in Indonesia. Nonetheless, the used of EMI in teaching might bring difficulty for the students in their learning, in particular for teaching young learners. Hence, teacher has to apply their teaching with instructional models that can help young learners understand the material. In this study, one class of a bilingual kindergarten, Satya Wacana Children Center, was observed. Two teachers of the class were interviewed. This study found that three types out of five instructional models suggested by Petrina (2007) were used in the teaching activities. The instructional models are Direct Instruction, Interactive Instruction, and Experimental Instruction. Teachers’ reasons of using the instructional models were also included. This study will hopefully be useful for any teacher in bilingual schools to make their instruction understandable for the students.

The EMI phenomenon it is highly unlikely that the majority of countries, certainly in the tertiary phase, will seek to reverse the decision to push forward with even more courses taught in English which. If the phenomenon cannot be slowed down to a speed that will allow reflection, then at the very least it is encumbent on researchers and teachers alike to strive to make the experience for their learners as enabling and as rewarding as possible. 14
