In an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, experts say that exercise has little role in tackling obesity. , avoiding excessive sugar and carbohydrates is the key. People in modern society have easy access to foods, such as those sold in convenience stores, gas stations or fast food chains.

While these foods may be inexpensive and , they are often processed and contain large amounts of sugar, salt, fat and other unhealthy ingredients. Research has shown that they are contributing to the world’s growing obesity epidemic and that the message people can eat whatever they like as long as they exercise is totally wrong.

However, some other scientists said it was risky to the role of exercise. To fight obesity, the general public should be encouraged to live healthy lives. And a healthy lifestyle will include both a balanced diet and exercise. Clear on-pack nutrition information helps consumers to calculate and

Short and simple as they are, fables teach people important life lessons and reveal the truths concealed in ordinary events. In fact, many parents find less laborious and more effective to instill correct concepts into their children by leading them to read interesting and inspiring fables than just through lectures. The following is a good example of how an ancient Chinese fable helps modern readers understand the world. The story like this: A man was trying to sell his horse in the market.

He had stood there for three days, but of the passersby would come to take a look. , he turned to Bo Le, a specialist known for his skill in selecting fine horses, for help. All the man asked Bo Le to do was walk around the horse three times and turn his head to glimpse at it several times while leaving.

Bo Le agreed and did so. , the man sold the horse at a high price. The moral of the fable is that people tend to blindly follow others’ or experts’ opinions rather than make their own judgment. It

Some people wonder why Taipei’s color palette is what it is. Most signboards are printed using highly saturated primary colors, such as red, yellow, and blue. The conflicting and contrasting color systems in use around Taipei make it seem as if the entire city is arguing and shouting. Apparently, our use of colors has stagnated. That’s why Agua Chou, founder of Agua Design and head of City Yeast, aimed to carry out a cleanup on Taipei to create a more comfortable and harmonious urban environment.

In 2016, City Yeast earned an opportunity to put its ideals into action. Taipei has more than 9,000 electrical transformer boxes, which have a real impact on the city’s streetscape. These boxes are a standardized green color, though some have landscapes or bird-and-flower paintings on them.

While the latter are intended to make the boxes more visually appealing, they just add to the city’s visual chaos. City Yeast spent months brainstorming and generating ideas on how to integrate the transformer boxes into the cityscape. Their design guidelines focused on using low-saturation colors that don’t show dirt, integrating the boxes with their surroundings and making them locally prominent.

For example, Songjiang Road is an important financial corridor with a lot of gray building. They thus chose to use a gray gradient on the transformer boxes. On the other hand, they chose coffee-brown, which exudes calm and stability but also old, for boxes in the more cultured atmosphere of Xinsheng South Road. In general, City Yeast went with darker colors because such shades can make objects seem smaller. The result of all their work was that the transformer boxes became both obviously designed, but very . That is the magic of color. While the repainting of the transformer boxes is only one small step for City Yeast, it has been a giant leap for Taipei color.

Why did City Yeast select darker colors when repainting the electrical transformer boxes?

Such shades can make objects look less dirty.

Such shades can make objects look smaller.

Such shades can make people feel calm and cultured.

Such shades can integrate the boxes with their surroundings more easily.

What does the word “ ” most likely mean?

not energetic not vivid not eye-catching not saturated

(9)

What is the author’s attitude toward carrying out a cleanup on Taipei’s color scheme?

neutral positive negative indifferent Which of the following is true?

The transformer boxes in the neighborhood of Songjiang Road are painted coffee-brown.

Highly-saturated primary colors are greatly overused on street signs or warnings in Taipei.

All of the transformer boxes in Taipei are painted green, with birds or flowers drawn on them.

City Yeast tends to use bright colors in repainting transformer boxes to add energy to the city.

palette n.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Katie Ledecky, a 15-year-old upstart, was the youngest American participant. That was her international debut. She was qualified to swim in the final of the 800-meter freestyle. She stunned the field, winning gold by more than 4 seconds with a time of 8:14.63, the then second fastest effort of all time just behind Rebecca Adlington’s world record of 8:14.10 set in 2008. Asked about her secret to success, Ledecky credited her success to hard work and perseverance, saying “I just work hard and try my best every time I step up on those blocks.” What’s more, she had strong faith in herself. With confidence, she said, “ I’m never worried about setting high goals for myself. I know if I put my mind to it, I can do it. I tell myself

whenever I feel my lungs are burning and my muscles are screaming and I still have dozens of laps to go.”

“I can do this” can be a mixed blessing. There’re times when Ledecky fails spectacularly and frequently because she is always pushing her limits and shooting for a seemingly impossible pace.

However, it is this belief that propels her to make history as the first to swim, and win, all four freestyle distances—200 m,

 400 m, 800 m and 1,500 m—at the same meet, the 2015 world championships.

The feat becomes known as the “Ledecky Slam” and that’s aquatic version of beating Usain Bolt and winning the marathon. This summer in Rio Olympics, she set out to win five medals, and she did, with a dominant performance—four golds, one silver, two world records, victories by unheard-of margins of 4.77 and 11.38 seconds. Has she hit her peak? Her coach says she is a machine of pure and awe-inspiring power and that what she’s about to achieve will be a once-in-a-generation thing. Will it happen? All Ledecky has to tell herself is “I can do this.”

What is the passage mainly about?

A young athlete who has broken world record by 0.53 second.

An experienced coach who has secret plans to train world champions.

A teenage swimmer who aims to pursue excellence.

A female sprinter who can run faster than Usain Bolt.

Which factor is NOT mentioned as what makes Katie Ledecky successful?

  Her long-time effort.

  Her unique techniques.

  Her strong confidence.

  Her continuous dedication.

What does “this” in the second paragraph most likely refer to?

(11)

  I’ll break world records.

  I am the best.

  I have set high goals.

  I can do this.

Which of the following statements is true about Katie Ledecky?

She won gold medal the first time she competed in Olympics.

She is the youngest Olympic medalist in American swimming history.

The 2015 world championships was named “Ledecky Slam” due to her victories.

In Rio Olympics, her goal of winning champions in five events was met.

Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, helium is a gas with unique qualities. For instance, its boiling point is the lowest among all the elements in the world, at -269˚C, just a few degrees above absolute zero (-273˚C). As an

gas, it almost never reacts with other chemicals. Also, it is extremely light. If not trapped in rocks or underground caves, it floats up through the atmosphere and leaks into space. Though it is the second most abundant element in the universe, it is relatively rare on the earth.

Helium can be very useful in several aspects of our life. Scuba divers have to breathe in a mixture of oxygen and helium under the sea since the blend of nitrogen and oxygen in the normal air would become toxic under great pressure. Helium also helps workers detect leaks in industrial systems, for the small atoms it contains can easily flow through the tiniest cracks. In addition, the lightness and inactiveness of helium allow things like balloons or blimps to float in the air without the risk of adding inflammable hydrogen. Best of all, with a boiling point just a couple of degrees above absolute zero, helium can serve as a very good coolant, which greatly facilitates the function of many scientific devices including satellites, telescopes, and the countless life-saving MRI scanners in hospitals around the world.

As the significance of helium is growing, the demand for this precious gas is increasing too. The global consumption of helium is about 8 billion cubic feet (Bcf) each year, but the world’s known reserve holds only 153 Bcf, which means helium will soon run out. The crisis worries scientists and doctors so much that they even call for a ban on using helium for party balloons in an attempt to conserve it. Though a new gas field with 54 Bcf helium discovered in Tanzania seems to bring a beam of hope, it will only relieve the problem temporarily. Unless new technology can provide an alternative, humans will soon face the inevitable: Helium is lost to us forever.

  Between 2020 and 2030.

  Between 2030 and 2040.

  Between 2040 and 2050.

Which of the following statements is true?

Helium can hardly be found both on the earth and in outer space.

Doctors care about helium shortage because it is very good medicine for some diseases.

To keep helium from running out, people are not allowed to inflate balloons with it in some countries.

Scientists still have difficulty finding other substances to take the place of helium.

The Complete Peanuts is a series of books containing the entire run—50 years and 18,170 strips

—of Charles M. Schulz’s long-running newspaper comic strip masterpiece, Peanuts. A new book in the series is released every six months, each containing two years of strips (except for the first volume which includes 1950

1952). The first book was released in 2004 and a total of 26 volumes are scheduled to be printed by the end of 2016. The first volume confronts us afresh with what a brilliant, truly modern and weird idea it was to create a comic strip about a chronically depressed child. Schulz wasn’t wild about the series of books because he thought his early work was crude, and he didn’t especially want to see it reprinted. However, his wife, Jean, disagreed, and after his death in 2000 she worked with an editor to pull the collection together. “To me, what’s happening here is we’re getting back to the comic strip—the simplicity, the black and whiteness of it. For some people, the animation is more real than the comic strip, but the comic is what is truly him.” She’s right. To read The Complete Peanuts is to forget that Snoopy ever did a commercial for Metlife insurance.

Schulz was right, too. The early comics are crude, but that’s what makes them fascinating. Back then, the characters are all toddlers and Snoopy is a puppy. Take the main character, Charlie Brown, for example. His personality is also different. He is more of a mischievous prankster; he can often be seen scampering off in the last frame with a victim in hot pursuit. But as you turn the pages, you can feel Schulz finding his rhythm. Charlie Brown gets his stripy shirt, and he gets called a blockhead for the first time in 1951. Then, he gradually drops the Little Rascal act in favor of refrains like “I can’t stand it!!!”, “Boy, am I ever depressed.” and “Nobody loves me ...” If Freud discovered infant sexuality, Schulz is the pioneer of the sadness of little children. It turns out to be not so different from the sadness of adults.

Which is the main idea of this article?

(15)

It’s an introduction of Charles M. Schulz’s newspaper comic strip, Peanuts.

It’s a discussion about how the characters in Peanuts have changed.

It’s the background of the publication of the series of books, The Complete Peanuts.

It’s an exploration of the inner side of the cartoonist, Charles M. Schulz.

Which of the following statements is NOT true?

Schulz was convinced that his early strips were sophisticated enough to be published.

The whole series of 26 books took about 13 years to publish.

Metlife insurance licensed Snoopy to promote its company on TV.

Charlie Brown got his iconic stripy shirt and his friends called him “blockhead” in 1951.

What might the word “ ” in the second paragraph mean?

  chronic ecstatic furious gloomy

Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the article?

Schulz didn’t have any idea about the publishing of The Complete Peanuts.

Charlie Brown was a very naughty kid and often got into trouble in the early Peanuts.

Most people love the lively animation of Peanuts more than the comic strips.

Schulz was the first cartoonist who discovered the distress of children’s life.

Peanuts

Several key factors have helped shape our character, one of which is someone with great influence. For me, this person is my loving mother. Her short hair framing a stern-looking face without any make-up on, Mom looks a bit serious for people who don’t know her. But deep down, she is caring and understanding, having devoted all her time and energy to nurturing her three children. She is also unfailingly kind to people, including strangers. Mom is profoundly influential in molding my personality, as she herself has set the best example.

Life as a single mother is never easy, but Mom takes on the challenges with optimism and perseverance. Whenever I’m upset about or depressed by setbacks, Mom would always say, “You didn’t fail. You just found one more way that won’t work. Now you can start afresh.” Such optimism and humor always bring a smile to my lips and courage to my heart, and I can stride bravely again. Whenever I say something harsh to people, Mom corrects me with love, telling me to be gentle and kind wherever possible. Mom has taught me to look on the bright side of life, seeing opportunity in every adversity, and to always show kindness, for every stranger might be an angel in disguise. I can proudly say that I am who I am today because of my mother.
