Message of Head of the Civil Engineering Department

All praises for Almighty Allah, blessings and peace be upon on Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions. It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of my colleagues of the civil Engineering Department at Jouf University. We are pleased to put in your hands the introductory guide for the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program in which we hope that you will find everything that is useful and important.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the first scientific departments that was established in the College of Engineering to offer a Bachelor of Science program in Civil Engineering with highest standards. The Department of Civil Engineering at Jouf University seeks to provide a distinct educational environment capable of preparing civil engineers with a high level of quality and efficiency by offering academic programs according to the latest study plans and ensuring that the students acquire various skills to enhance the process of distinguished scientific research and contribute in community services. The department has distinguished faculty staff members in various civil engineering specialties who work according to the vision and mission of the department in order to achieve the desired goals. In addition, Department of Civil Engineering has laboratories for various specialties equipped with the latest devices that contribute directly in raising the efficiency and quality of the educational process.

Based on the department's keenness of ensuring the quality of its programs and endeavor to continuous development and improvement in accordance with the latest international standards, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program has also obtained international academic accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The department is also looking forward to further accreditation and that which will contribute in qualifying and improving the programs in all aspects.

Head of the Department

Department Establishment :

The College of Engineering at Jouf University was established after the approval of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud - may Almighty Allah have mercy on him - on 7/6/1426 AH, based on what was submitted by the Higher Education Council at its thirty sixth session held on 2/26/1426 AH, which included his approval for establishment of an engineering college at Jouf University.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1429-1430 AH and offers a Bachelor of

Science degree in Civil Engineering. The first batch of the program was graduated in spring, 1434

AH. The students of the department are prepared with various branches of civil engineering

such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering, management,

hydraulics, water resources engineering, surveying, transportation engineering, and environmental

engineering.

(11)

Vision

Leadership in the civil engineering field.

Mission

To prepare high quality civil engineers with the ability to conduct scientific research and help in community services.

Objectives

The graduates of civil engineering will have the following skills/attributes/capabilities within a few years after their graduation:

•PEO-1. Graduates will meet or exceed the expectations of employers of civil engineers.

•PEO-2. Qualified graduates will pursue advanced study if they so desire.

•PEO-3. Graduates will pursue leadership positions in their profession and/or communities

Admission Criteria

The student can join the program after passing the joint first year of the scientific (engineering) track. The department and college councils determine annually the number of students who can be admitted to the college’s programs based on the absorptive capacity of each department and the cumulative average. The number of students admitted to the civil engineering program for the current year has been determined (70 students with a GPA of 3.5). Based on their GPA in the first common year.

Transfer Criteria

A. Transformation to the Civil Engineering Program outside the University of Jouf:

•The student is a transferee from a corresponding school engineering.

•Students are accepted according to the capacity of the program and determined by the department and college councils and preference according to the GPA, provided that it is not less than the average determined by the department and college councils. Determined for the current year (10 seats with a GPA of 3.5).

•The transfer takes into account the controls listed in the Studies and Tests Regulations – Part XII - Article 42.

B. Transformation to the Civil Engineering Program from within the University:

•The student has passed the engineering course in the first year and has spent at least one class at the college.

• Students are accepted according to the capacity of the program and determined by the department and college councils and preference according to the GPA, provided that it is not less than the average determined by the department and college councils. Determined for the current year (10 seats with a GPA of 3.75).

•The transfer takes into account the controls listed in the Studies and Tests Regulations – Part XII - Article 46.

(27)

C. Transfer to the Civil Engineering Program from another program within the college:

Students are accepted according to the capacity of the program and determined by the department and college councils and preference according to the GPA, provided that it is not less than the average determined by the department and college councils. Determined for the current year (10 seats with a GPA of 3.5).

The transfer from one section to another within the College shall take into account the

controls listed in the Studies and Tests Regulations —Part XII - Article 46.

civil engineering. These laboratories are equipped with the modern devices that contribute in improving the efficiency and quality of the educational process in the course levels as well as the graduation projects, which is reflected in the efficiency and quality of the program outputs. In addition, these laboratories are supporting the scientific research process for students and staff members in the department.

(29)

28 Facilities and Laboratories

Surveying Lab:

The surveying lab is one of the laboratories in the Civil Engineering Department. The lab includes the ground survey sections and instruments. The main section is devoted to plane surveying and its instruments (tape, compass, level, theodolite, total station). The lab is also equipped with the software application of remote sensing, photogrammetry, and geographic information systems using computer. The lab serves the core and elective courses of the programs in the Civil Engineering Department. It also serves many of the department's graduation projects.

Soil Mechanics Lab:

The Soil Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering at the College of Engineering - Jouf University includes the newest soil equipments that help civil engineering students in the scientific teaching process and applications of laboratory and field tests on the soil. In addition to contributing to scientific research in the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.

Construction Materials Lab:

The construction materials laboratory is concerned with studying and determining the physical, chemical and engineering properties of metals and materials used in the field of construction engineering. Instruments for testing the properties and engineering behavior of metals are an important part, as universal tensile devices and compression and bending devices are available. It also includes the devices for experimenting the steel’s resistance to pitting and corrosion, for the importance of these in the construction fields .

Concrete Lab:

The concrete laboratory is concerned with studying and determining the properties of concrete materials. The lab contains equipment and devices for conducting experiments on the components of the concrete: cement, aggregate, and wet and dry concrete. It also includes the equipment and devices for measuring stress and strain generated by the models of concrete elements and textures, and the rebar of these elements. The lab serves the educational purposes for the students in teaching the practical part of the Proprieties and testing of concrete course, and construction materials course and conducting the lab experiments of the graduation project .

(30)

The Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Lab aims to study the properties and water flow water within water networks and sewage channels, which are considered one of the most important components of the infrastructure of any civilized city. In Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Lab, there is a set of devices through which the student is given a complete concept to understand the different methods of measuring flow rates, water capacity and velocity in closed pipes and open channels. In addition, the student will gain experience to understand properties of fluids such as viscosity, surface tension, and other properties of a fluid. In addition, the lab contains some devices concerned with representing hydrological phenomena, such as measuring rain and water seepage through the soil.

Highway engineering lab:

The highway engineering lab at College of Engineering, Jouf University aims to conduct quality control tests for different paving materials that used in pavement construction, in addition to the design of asphalt mixtures. The lab consists of equipment that can serve many tests related to highway engineering course and student graduated project and scientific research of staff members.

Environmental Engineering Lab:

The Environment Lab at the College of Engineering, Jouf University contains the latest devices that

contribute to introducing students how to evaluate water and wastewater quality standards according

to internationally standardized methods. The lab is also concerned with introducing students to the

newly used methods for treating salt water and wastewater in order to provide safe and clean

drinking water.
