Abstract: This article clarifies the Influence of transverse connection on the maximum bending moment in precast slab girders of concrete bridge due to live loads, calculated according to AASHTO LRFD provisions and by finite element method (FEM). The result comparison shows that the formulas by AASHTO deliver more conservative values than that by using FEM.
The additional cast-in-situ concrete overlay or transverse prestressing through diaphragms reduces the maximum bending moment in slab girders considerably compared to that In the ease of using only shear keys ttetween slab girders.
In case the construction depth is not limited the combination of additional concrete overlay and transverse prestressing to strengthen live load distribution over slab girders could be considered.
