The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Covid-19 Team consisting of police, SANDF members and provincial traf- fic officers caught him on Tuesday 25 August.

Lentswe, Jouberton - In what some people consider a light slap on the wrist, a tavern owner in Jouberton was fined R2 000 for breaking lockdown regulations.
Thys Joint was buzzing on Wednes- day 19 August when it hosted an open deck party. Just before the event, a poster was circulated on social media inviting party-goers to attend for free and also a DJ lineup. No mention was made of Covid-19 regulations.
Lockdown regulations stipulate that no more than 50 patrons be allowed in- side a tavern or restaurant, masks must be worn and social distancing must be adhered to. The curfew of 22:00 is also still in place.
Videos circulating on social media show the place was packed with little to
no social distancing and only a mask to be seen here and there. It is not sure at what time the videos were taken. This sparked an outrage from viewers lam- basting the patrons as well as the owner for not adhering to regulations.
Even Matlosana Executive Mayor, Maetu Kgaile, condemned it in an of- ficial statement. “The Matlosana Mu- nicipality is highly disappointed with the owner to have hosted such an event at a time where people are dying due to Covid-19. The event had the potential of allowing and easy spread and infec- tion of the virus. Our district is regard- ed as a hotspot are and currently we have 1983 cases of Covid-19 infections in Matlosana alone,’’ she said.
Jouberton Police attended to the scene after complaints circulated on Facebook. According to the North
West police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, the 54-year-old owner was issued with a notice to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday 28 September for contraven- ing Regulation 14(6) read with 5(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002).
“He may also elect to pay an admis- sion of guilt fine of R2000 payable on or before 7 September 2020,” Brig Mokgwabone said.
On Klerksdorp Record’s Facebook page, followers criticized the establish- ment for allowing the event to take place, saying behaviour like this will eventually ensure that alcohol and ciga- rettes are banned again.
Nontsikelelo Ndakane: “What hap- pened to the curfew? This is absolutely crazy, their poor parents are the ones
that will be affected.”
Annetjie Loannou: “R2000? You must be kidding me. Because of this, alcohol will be banned again soon. Why is it so difficult for people to obey rules in this country? My goodness, it is for your own, and your loved ones safely.’’
The owner of Thys Joint regrets host- ing the party and paid the fine. Thys Moyawa told Lentswe that he paid the fine and said it will not happen again.
“I apologised about this situation and admit that it was wrong,’’ he said.
Police said members of the public and business owners are urged to en- sure strict compliance with the gen- eral measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 as stipulated in the lockdown regulations, including mandatory wear- ing of cloth face masks and keeping of social distancing.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp – Village Main Reef (VMR) will not close their two mineshafts and gold plant.
Coenie Rheeder of Solidarity was involved with meetings between other unions and mine management on Tues- day 25 August and he said the mines will stay open.
NUM Matlosana’s regional secretary, Masibulele Naki, also attended the meeting and he confirmed that the
mine will not close.
According to Rheeder, this is great news for Matlosana after initial state- ments by Heaven Sent that the shafts (Tau Lekoa and Kopanang) and the West Rand gold plant will close with the loss of 6 000 jobs. The impact would have been devastating for the local economy.
“VMR now intends keeping 3 683 jobs, but 2 000 have to go.”
The main reason for the closure would have been the great losses suf- fered before and during the lockdown.
“Mines could only function at 50%
and now VMR wants to increase pro- duction to 100%. They can make money at the current gold price of $1 936.60/R32 690.75 per ounce.”
No agreement between the unions and management has been signed yet due to disagreements over retrench-
ment packages.
Johan Oosthuizen, chairperson of the Matlosana Business chamber, described the decision by the mine to stay open as
“‘fantastic news”.
“It will relieve the pressure on the local economy and stop a repeat of the Pamodzi fiasco where people had to fight to stay alive.
“It is excellent news for Klerksdorp,”
said Oosthuizen.

This inspirational speaker authored two other books called ‘Bend don’t break’
and also ‘Reason no to fall’.
She is also the founder and manag- ing director of the ‘Bend don’t break movement’.
She said: “The movement is aimed at crisis prevention by skilling and equip- ping communities better every day, to not just exist or survive, but to thrive in life.”
Kwenamore told Lentswe that she’s also a mentor and a business consul- tant who is cur- rently studying for a degree in Counseling Psychology.
Speaking about this book she said: “Who is a witch is a memoir about a man who self- sabotages by seeking spiri- tual solutions to character-deficit issues. He spent his whole life looking at every- body, including
his children, as suspects for his life pre- dicaments. Meanwhile, his witch lurked within him - his character.
“Your character is your fate. Noth- ing can stop you from achieving your goal when you have the right mental attitude. A person with a wrong mental attitude is a danger to himself or her- self, family, society and career. Nothing on earth can help that person. Except themselves. Lentswe, Stilfontein- Four suspects aged between (31) and (57) who were arrested by the Hawks were each grant- ed R5 000 bail at the Stilfontein Magis- trate Court on Friday 21 August.
This was after they were arrested on Monday 17 August during an Hawks intelligence driven operation in Khuma for illegal mining, illegal possession of gold bearing material, illegal dealing in gold and money laundering.
Suspects, businessman Abraham
‘Tasko’ Banda (49) and his co-accused, Bernett Pogisho Seliane (50) and broth- ers, Bulelani Kima Mbambo (31) and Fati ‘Whitty’ Mbambo (57) who pleaded not guilty into the matter were repre- sented by their lawyer, Thapelo Khalo.
During bail application hearing, the state prosecutor Tumisang Megalane opposed bail saying that the agents working on the case’s cover were blown and that their lives were in danger as well as the lives of the accused.
The defense attorney argued that one of the accused, Whitty is a survivor of Covid-19 and that it won’t be healthy for him to remain in custody as the cells are overcrowded.
Magistrate Jerry Maleka approved the bail application saying that the trial will take long to completion and that the accused have the right to be re- leased on bail.
Another accused, Sipiriti Sesing (31) is still in custody as the Hawks are still verifying his status in the country. Ses- ing told the court that his passport is in Bloemfontein.
Capt Rikhotso said the simultane- ous operation resulted in the seizure of R760 000 cash, a firearm, two Mercedes Benz sedans, Toyota double cab, Isuzu bakkie, mercury and gold refining para- phernalia.
The next court date is 14 September for regional court decision.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp – In the next step in the ongoing financial crisis of the Matlosana Municipality, busi- ness chambers in the city has called a meeting with Eskom to discuss the city’s debt.
Johan Oosthuizen, chairperson of the Matlosana Business Chamber, said everyone is worried about the strict payment terms the municipal- ity agreed to. “We do not think the municipality will be able to keep up with these payments and then we are back to step one,’’ he said.
Last week, the Matlosana Business Chambers Unite (represented by the Wesvaal Chamber, the Black Business Chamber of Commerce and Indus- try (MBBCOCI), and the Matlosana Business Chamber) met with the Mu- nicipal Manager, the Chief Financial
Officer (CFO) and the Director LED.
Midvaal Water was also represented at the meeting.
During this meeting it was dis- closed that the municipality owes its top three creditors more than a bil- lion rand.
Besides the Eskom debt, Midvaal Water company is owed more than R500 million and the Department of Transport owed more than R100 million.
“We need the effort and input of all stakeholders to resolve and over- come these huge financial difficul- ties, as these problems are unlikely to be resolved by the politicians and/or administration of Matlosana,’’ Oost- huizen said after the meeting.
A follow-up meeting will be held next month.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - SASSA will open its system for approved applicants to change their preferred method of payment for the special Covid-19 SRD grant. The window period is scheduled for Monday 31 August to Sunday 6 Sep- tember, 24 hours a day.
During this period, beneficiaries can change from receiving their grants at the post office to receiving them through their personal bank accounts.
They may also change from one bank to another if they prefer to.
“When choosing a bank account, en-
sure that the account is in your name (SASSA cannot pay money for one person into the account held by an- other) and that the bank account is not closed. The payment process is delayed if money is sent to a closed account, as SASSA has to wait for the funds to be returned before sending it to the Post Office for collection,” said SASSA CEO Totsie Memela. Clients who update their details are advised to ensure that their information is captured correctly to avoid any further delays.
The payment of the COVID-19 grant
is quicker if paid into a bank account.
Applicants without bank accounts are thus encouraged to open a bank ac- count. There are many entry level, inex- pensive options in the market – some of which can be opened online.
Clients who have just been approved for the relief grant by SASSA and have received an SMS to upload and verify their bank details, can do so at any time and need not wait for the window period. The sooner the details are up- loaded, the quicker the payments can be made.
Any citizen who does not update their information during this window period, or who provides incorrect bank- ing details will have the payments for the remaining months sent through to the Post Office.
Responses to frequently asked ques- tions about this relief grant can be found on the WhatsApp platform on 082 046 8553.
Approved beneficiaries of the grant can change their payment method by visiting https://srd.sassa.gov.za during this period.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp – Motorists with expired vehicle license disks, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates have only a few days left to renew.
All vehicle license discs, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates that expired between 26 March and 31 May are valid until Monday 31 August. Re- newals can be done at licensing centres and the main Post Office in City Mall.
Driving license cards, as well as learn- ers’ licenses, temporary licenses and professional driving permits that ex- pired between 26 March and 31 August are valid till 31 January 2021.
The Automobile Association launched a petition urging government to extend the validity period of licenses due to the current problems with renewals at Driv-
ing License Testing Centres.
According to AA chief executive Wil- lem Groenewald it is great news for motorists who have been worried about being legal on the road in the face of mounting backlogs with renewals.
The AA added that it hopes govern- ment will monitor the situation with renewals closely and, should the need arise, it should consider further exten- sions in the new year.
“We believe much can be done be- tween now and the end of January to clear backlogs but if there are still issues with renewals at that time, government will need to consider a further exten- sion beyond the end of January to en- sure everyone is accommodated fairly,”
Groenewald said.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - With the lifting of the alcohol ban, from 26 August the Association for Alcohol Responsibil- ity and Education (aware.org.za) urges South Africans to realise that their drinking choices have more conse- quences than ever before.
Now more than ever it is crucial that those who consume alcohol practice a culture of moderation and responsible consumption.
In light of the lifting of the ban, aware.org encourages the public to take into consideration that with the current context of Covid-19, there is a need to adopt a responsible lifestyle.
It is imperative to continue practis- ing social distancing, wearing masks, respecting the government’s Covid-19 guidelines, and more importantly tak- ing note of and adhering to the 22:00 curfew put in place. As the custodians of alcohol harm reduction in South Africa, the organisation urges South Af- ricans to drink responsibly, not to binge drink, refrain from drink and driving, and continues to encourage traders to trade responsibly.
It is clear that reckless behaviour as well as the abuse and misuse of alcohol can lead to negative consequences that impact not only the individual but fami-
lies, communities and South Africans as a whole. Aware.org together with the liquor industry would like to heed the words of our President and government that we take collective responsibility, as South Africans, to move on with our lives both safely and responsibly. We must proceed with caution and conduct ourselves in respect of Covid-19 guide- lines to ensure we will have a better tomorrow.
“It is without a doubt that if we do not adhere to the guidelines in place to protect each and every one of us that we risk returning to a state of restriction and/ ban. We are urging South Africans with the lifting of the alcohol ban to demonstrate our ability as a nation to be responsible and avoid irresponsible and risky behaviour.
“Do not binge drink, do not drink and drive, respect the rule of law and let us move forward in our social con- tract as citizens. What I do today can impact someone else tomorrow.
“Let us be cautious and keep each other safe,” says Ingrid Louw, CEO of aware.org.
Aware.org’s mandate is to effectively redress the scourge of alcohol abuse and promote healthy behavioural choic- es with regards to alcohol consumption.
Lifting of alcohol ban - drink responsibly

She resides at Margaret Village, Stil- fontein. She has since disappeared without a trace.
Anyone with information regard- ing her whereabouts is requested to contact Sgt Mokonopi of Stilfontein Detective Service on 083 511 7120.
The organisation along with its industry partners demonstrates its commitment by continuing to support liquor trad- ers with effective education and aware- ness to assist them to trade responsibly whilst maintaining accepted hygiene practices to limit the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of their patrons and community.
The organisation does not only focus on binge drinking, but it also offers ef- fective programmes that reduce harm in areas of Underage Drinking (UAD),
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Drink and Driving/Walking as well as Responsible Trade Facilitation.
“Our success in curbing the spread of the virus rests on our ability to trade responsibly, practice responsible drink- ing, including practising a culture of moderation and adhering to govern- ment lockdown restrictions and COV- ID-19 guidelines.
“Our behaviour determines our to- morrow. Is it binge or is it ban?” adds Louw.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp – This is Ntombi- zodwa Merriam Mahlangu’s story. Born on a farm, in the dusty streets of Tontel- doos (Emhlabaneni), near Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, she always dreamed of pursuing her education.
However, a lack of resources and development in the rural areas, a poor education system, financial difficulty
and an unplanned pregnancy, all got in the way of her dream.
Nonetheless, she persisted and com- pleted Grade 12 at Tonteldoos Second- ary School in 2003.
At the age of 18, she moved to a shack in Mountain View village in KwaMhlanga to take care of her young- er sister, while her parents pursued
work in other ar- eas.
In 2004, Ntom- bizodwa fell preg- nant and had to pass on an op- portunity to pur- sue her studies at Tshwane Univer- sity of Technology.
To provide for her daughter, at the age of 21 Ntombizodwa started as a domes- tic worker in Pretoria East in 2007.
During this time, she taught her- self to use a computer. With her hard earned cash, she acquired a certificate in Microsoft Office and found employ- ment as a receptionist. She studied fur- ther and acquired a certificate in Office Management with UNISA.
She later worked as a personal as- sistant and a public relations officer at a large organisation in the debt regula- tion industry.
With the support of her employer, she started studying part-time in 2014.
In 2018, at the age of 32, Ntombizodwa finally obtained her degree in Public Administration and Communication
Facilitation with UNISA. She managed to complete her degree while dealing with the passing of both her parents and while taking care of her daughter full-time.
Ntombizodwa had language barrier, but because of unrelenting drive to ob- tain a tertiary education, she overcame the odds.
She is now employed at a large entity in the South African credit industry.
To inspire others, she has written an account of her experiences: growing up in a mud hut in Tonteldoos without electricity, living in a shack in KwaM- hlanga, being a teenage mother and working as a domestic worker. Bright- ness of Diamonds through Soil was pub- lished on 3 August.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Football fans are looking forward to the clash of the titans on Thursday 27 August at 18:00 at Orlando Stadium.
The former PSL champions, Ma- melodi Sundowns and the recent log leader, Kaizer Chiefs will go head to head.
Amakhosi have been on the top of
the league for a long time since last year before the break of Covid-19.
Now that the Glamour Boys are still leading the log tables with 53 points before the match, even if they lose the match against AmaSundawana which is 50 points, that won’t make changes as Chiefs will still lead the log. This is from their advantage of scoring more
goals this season.
There will be serious changes if Bid- vest Wits beat Chiefs on Sunday and then Sundowns win or draw against Baroka.
After Thursday’s match, both teams will be left with four games.
Chiefs will be left with Wits, Chippa United and Baroka, meanwhile, Sun-
downs with Baroka, Polokwane City and Black Leopards.
And those are the teams which are running away from the PSL relegation.
Sundowns Coach Pitso Mosimane said he doesn’t think Thursday is a title decider, meanwhile, Chiefs Coach Ernst Middedorp said they have to be focused as a team.
